Balancing Rights and Safety: An Examination of Gun Control in America

The debate concerning gun control in the United States has been marked by passionate

arguments on both sides of the spectrum. While I will be arguing in favor of gun control for the

purposes of this paper, it is essential to note that I am doing so with the intent to present a

balanced view. In reality, I am against further gun control. In this paper, I will highlight key

reasons proponents of this policy believe it is a vital step towards reducing gun violence. Such as

reducing gun violence as a whole, preventing mass shootings, and addressing mental health

concerns. Starting off with reducing gun violence.

The most critical argument in favor of gun control is the potential to reduce gun violence.

The United States has one of the highest rates of gun-related deaths. According to the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were more than 39 thousand gun-related deaths in

2019. Advocates for gun control argue that implementing stricter regulations, background

checks, and waiting periods could reduce this number significantly. Evidence from countries that

have already implemented such regulations, like Japan and Australia, suggest such regulations

can lead to a reduction in gun violence. Moving on to mass shootings.

Probably the second most compelling argument for gun control is the potential to

drastically reduce or even prevent mass shootings. In recent years, the United States has had a

disturbing number of mass shootings. Proponents of gun control say implementing measures

such as an assault weapons ban could deter individuals with ill-intent from carrying out such

terrible acts of violence. Evidence from the United Kingdom, where strict gun laws have been in

place for many years, shows a lower number of mass shootings. Lastly now I will move onto

mental health concerns.

Critics of gun control, such as myself, often argue that it infringes on the Second

Amendment rights of the American people. However, advocates argue that gun control measures

can be balanced with addressing mental health concerns. By implementing background checks

that evaluate the mental health history of an individual, we can strive to ensure that guns do not

fall into the wrong hands. This approach is a more comprehensive and preventative way of

addressing gun violence.

In conclusion, while I have presented arguments in favor of gun control, it is important to

remember that this issue is multifaceted. Advocating for gun control does not necessarily mean

infringing on the rights of responsible gun owners. The goal is to find a balance that reduces gun

violence and addresses mental health concerns while respecting the Second Amendment.
