RECAP

Sentences have a "voice". This term refers to how a subject, object,

and verb interact within a sentence. Their order will determine if a sentence
is in the active or passive voice. The tone and focus of your writing can
change completely depending on which construction you use. For today‟s
lesson, we will be focusing on the use of active voice.

The Active Voice makes it clear who is supposed to do what. It

eliminates ambiguity about responsibilities. Not “It must be done,” but “You
must do it.” In an active sentence, the doer of the action is the subject of the
sentence.

LESSON

Generally, we use the active voice whenever possible. In a sentence

written in the active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action.
Look at this example of the active voice:

https://www.grammar-monster.com/glossary/active_voice.htm
The subject „leopard‟ is the one doing the action, „chased‟ which makes
the sentence in the active voice. Remember that if a verb is in the active
voice, its subject performs the action of the verb. Let's go through this step
by step.

For our examples, the active verb is in bold letters.

Janet posted a letter.
Step 1: Find the subject. (Janet)
Step 2: Find the verb. (to post)
Step 3: Ask "Did Janet perform the verb?"
(Yes! Therefore, posted is a verb in the active voice.)
Another example
Curiosity killed the cat.
Step 1: Find the subject. (curiosity)
Step 2: Find the verb. (to kill)
Step 3: Ask "Did curiosity perform the verb?"
(Yes! Therefore, killed is a verb in the active voice.)

Just always follow our simple steps and you won‟t be confused again.

Guided Practice
Determine whether each sentence is in the active voice. Thumbs Up if it is
active voice and Thumbs Down if it is not.

1. Fr. Eamon gave a speech on the Mayohan festivities.

2. Dr. Nadres treated children with leukemia.
3. A reliable source revealed some shocking information.
Thumbs Up! Yes, this sentence is in active voice!
4. The ferry was whipped by a strong gust of wind.
Thumbs Down! This sentence is not in an active voice.
5. Karaoke was invented in 1975 by a Filipino named Roberto
del Rosario.
ACTIVITIES

I. Decide whether each sentence is in the active form or not. Circle

YES if it is in the active form, and NO if not. Then write the doer of
the action on the line to the right. If the doer is unknown, write a
question mark (?).

YES / NO 1) Thomas feeds his dog. _____

YES / NO 2) The dog is fed by Thomas. _____

YES / NO 3) The family went to the beach. _____

YES / NO 4) The letter was written by Marshall. _____

YES / NO 5) The game had been won by the blue team. _____

II. Write a short paragraph describing your experiences about the

current pandemic. Don‟t forget to use an active voice.
WRAP-UP

To wrap everything up that we have talked about in this lesson, let us

always remember that:
 The active voice is a style of writing where the subject completes the
action of the sentence.
 In the active voice, the subject always “does” the action of the
sentence.
 Most writing occurs in the active writing voice, as it is generally
clearer and more concise.

VALUING

We should always prioritize the safety of everyone.

POSTTEST
