PRETEST
Directions: Read each sentence carefully. Decide what prefix will fit each
word in the parenthesis. Write the prefixed word in the blank.
LESSON
The letters or syllables placed before the root word is called prefix.
When a prefix is added to the root word, it may change the original meaning
of a word. Now, let us talk about prefix!
For example, the word unload. The root word is load and the prefix is
un-. The prefix un- means opposite or not. Therefore, the word unload
means the opposite of load or not loading.
How about the word overweight? The root word is weight and the
prefix is-- over-. The prefix over means too much. Therefore, overweight
means too much weight.
Another example is the word preheat. The root word is heat, and the
prefix is pre-. The prefix pre- means before. Therefore, the word preheat
means…to heat before.
Here are some common prefixes with their meanings: un-, im-, in-,
non, il-, and dis means not. The prefix re- means again. The prefix ex-
means former. Another prefix is post meaning after. Here is another prefix
which is anti-, which means against and the last one is mono-, which
means one.

Guided Practice
Let’s try a few items as a practice exercise. Read the sentence and tell the
prefixed word and give its meaning. Here is the first one:
That’s right! The prefixed word is review. The prefix used is re-
which means again, thus review means to view again. So, the
sentence means I have to view again my notes before the test. How
about this sentence?
Exactly! The prefixed word is unsure. The prefix un- means not.
Thus, unsure means not sure. So, the sentence goes like this, we
were not sure as to where to stand. Here’s another sentence.
You got it! The prefixed word is disagree. The prefix is dis-meaning
not. Thus, disagree means not agree. So, the sentence goes like this, I
think it is a bad idea. I do not agree with your idea. Let’s try another
sentence.
You’re great! The prefix word is ex-governor. The prefix is ex- which
means former. Therefore, the word ex-governor means former
governor. Thus, the sentence goes like this…The former governor of
Isabela was responsible for successful corn farming.
Yes, indeed! The word with a prefix is impolite. The prefix is im-
that means not. The word impolite means not polite. So, my
grandmother doesn’t like children who are not polite.
