Food and digestion

The table shows the energy content (in kJr 100 g) of some common
foods. The columns per A, B, C and D show the percentage of either
protein, fat, carbohydrate or water in each food.

a) Which food has :


i) the highest energy content
ii) the lowest energy content?
i) Butter has the highest energy content with 3000 kJ/100g.
ii) Potatoes have the lowest energy content with 370 kJ/100g

b) Look carefully at the figures and try to work out which of A, B, C or D


is carbohydrate, which is water, which is protein and which is fat. For
each choice you make give a reason. b) Based on the values given in the
table:
- A is protein because it has the highest percentage in beef and tuna
which are known to be good sources of protein.
- B is fat because it has the highest percentage in butter which is known
to be a high-fat food.
- C is carbohydrate because it is the only nutrient left and it has the
highest percentage in potatoes which are known to be a good source of
carbohydrates.
- D is water because it has the highest percentage in butter, potatoes
and milk which are all high-water foods.
c) Give two important food materials which are not in the table, but are
essential for a balanced diet.
c) Two important food materials that are not in the table but are
essential for a balanced diet are:
- Fiber: it helps in maintaining bowel regularity and keeps the digestive
system healthy. Good sources of fiber are whole grains, fruits, and
vegetables.
- Vitamins and minerals: they play an important role in various bodily
functions and the deficiency of them can lead to various health
problems. Good sources of vitamins and minerals are fruits, vegetables,
dairy products, and whole grains.

a) i) Chicken contains the most protein (26.5%).
ii) Chicken and Watercress both have 0% carbohydrate.
What do you need protein and carbohydrates for?
When we grow our body , we needs protein to make new cells. our
body may need to replace old or damaged cells.
We need enough protein in your food for this as well.
Carbohydrates are a primary source of energy for the body.
b)Which foods have no fibre?
Milk, Sausage and chicken have no fiber.
What do you need fibre for?
Fibre odds bulk to our food. Since it is not digested. it passes down the
entire gut from mouth to anus. The muscles of the gut need something
to push against. It's like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube.Fibre
absorbs poisonous wastes from digesting foods.It prevents
constipation.Many doctors believe that a high-fibre diet lowers the level
of cholesterol in the blood. Fibre reduces the risk of heart disease and
bowel cancer.

c) i) Sausage gives the most energy with 1520 kj per 100g.
ii) Watercress gives the least energy with 61 kj per 100g.
Iron: Milk gives the least iron with 0.1 mg per 100g.
d) Which food has most iron?
Why do you need iron?
Watercress contains the most iron with 1.6 mg per 100g.
Iron is necessary for the production of hemoglobin, which carries
oxygen to all parts of the body. It is also important for immune function
and energy production.
e) Which foods contain no vitamin C?
Why do you need vitamin C?
Sausage and Chicken, contain no vitamin C.
Vitamin C is vital for collagen synthesis, immune function, and
antioxidant protection.
f) How much energy is there in
i) 50 g of milk?
ii) 200 g of sausage?
f) i) 50g of milk provides 136 kJ of energy.
ii) 200g of sausage provides 3040 kJ of energy.
