Difficulties Encountered by Students in Modular Distance Learning

INTRODUCTION

What is Modular Distance Learning? Llego(2020) describe that Modular Distance Learning is a form
of individualized instructions that learners allowed to use self-learning modules in print or digital form.
What is Module? According to Rahmawati, et al.(2019) they said that “Modules are printed teaching
materials designed to be studied independently by learning participants”.

The outbreak of the corona virus or COVID-19 resulted in a widespread disruption such as travel
restrictions, closure of schools and global economic situation. Most countries around the world have
temporarily closed educational institutions to stop the spread of virus and reduce infections. Philippines is
in the process of adapting to new normal form of education at present. For the continuity of education and
for every school to provide quality education to every Filipino learner, the Department of Education
implemented the “Modular Distance Learning”. Distance Learning refers to a learning delivery modality
and “Modular Learning” is the most popular type of Distance Learning.

Objective of the Study

Distance Learning is most preferred to those learner especially those in rural areas where internet is
not accessible. The teachers are responsible for the printed modules where in the parents or guardians will
get and submit the printed modules according to the schedule of retrieval time.

Contribution of the Study

The use of modules encourages the learners to independent study. They develop a sense of
responsibility in accomplishing the tasks provided in the modules. The learners progress on their own and
soon will adapt this mode of learning.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to enhance the learners in different communities to
adapt self-studying by way of modular learning. To develop a sense of responsibility and will adapt this
mode of learning.

Hypothesis

There is no significant between the difficulties encountered in modular learning to the difficulties
encountered in online class learning. To the learners they have to adjust themselves to what mode of
learning they have to choose.

Significance of the Study

The present research area is significant due to the reason that it is pandemic time so nowadays
“modular learning” has convincingly a popular mode of learning.

METHODOLOGY

In this study, I use phenomenological design to determine the challenges on the usage of Modular
Distance Learning Modality. The goal of this study is to analyze the experiences of the respondents in
Modular Learning.

The researcher conducted a survey at Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza, Sr. Highschool, 10 out of the
population of students in DPVMSHS was selected to answer the survey. I used quota sampling to identify
the variables that are important to my study.

For collection of data, the researcher developed a questionnaires with close-ended questions in order
to find out the factors that affects the self-studying of a learner.

The data for the study was collected through a survey, particularly by using questionnaires with close-
ended questions.

RESULTS

Figure 1

Digital Modules
Printed Modules

Figure 1 shows that 60% of 10 students prefer to use Digital Modules while 40% prefer to use
Printed Modules.

Figure 2

7am to 9am
1pm to 4pm
8pm to 10pm

Figure 2 shows that 80% of the students start answering their modules at 8:00pm to 10:00pm
while the 10% start at 7:00am to 9:00am in answering their modules and the remaining 10% they
start answering their modules at 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Figure 3

English
Mathematics
Science
Other

In this figure, it shows that 40% of 10 students get hard to answer in Other Subject then the
30% also get hard in answering Mathematics while 20% was for English and the 10% is for
Science.

Figure 4

Yes
No

Figure 4 shows that 50% of 10 students answered “Yes” that they have learned to use
Modular Distance Learning while other 50% answered “No” that they are still in the process of
learning to use Modular Distance Learning.

Figure 5

Lack of focus
No time at home
Lack of knowledge

In this figure, it shows that 40% of 10 students makes them hard to self-studying because of
the lack of knowledge to answer their modules while 30% makes them hard to self-studying
because of they have no time at home and the other 30% was for lack of focus in answering
modules.

DISCUSSION

Thus, it could be seen from the data that several difficulties were encountered by students in
Modular Distance Learning. Most cannot study independently, 40% of them makes them hard to
self-studying because of the lack of knowledge. Therefore, they experiences difficulty in self-
studying in Modular Distance Learning.

Conclusion

In this study, the researcher drawn the following conclusions based on the findings on the
“Difficulties Encountered by Students in Modular Distance Learning”. These are the following:

1. The students encountered the lack of knowledge in answering their modules. Some topic
in the modules need to search in order to get the needed information for their self-
studying.
2. The students encountered for having no time at home in answering their modules. Some
of them may be doing household chores so they have no time to answer their modules.
3. The students encountered the lack of focus. Some students may be interrupted in
answering their modules because of having a noisy environment.

Recommendation

Based on the conclusions above, the research come up with the following
recommendations on the “Difficulties Encountered by Students in Modular Distance
Learning”. These are the following:

1. The students should have a background about the topic that they have to study.
2. The students must know how to manage their time in order to have time to answer their
modules.
3. The students should be in a quiet place to avoid interruption in answering their modules.
