Born on August 15, 1990, in Louisville, Kentucky, Jennifer Lawrence
has a happy family background that's a far cry from the abused characters
she's played in films. Her father Gary owns a construction firm and her
mother Karen runs a day camp. The star has two older brothers, Ben and
Blaine.
Known as Jen in her family, the actress displayed her strong
motivation for the performing arts from a young age. At 14 she convinced
her parents to take her to New York to audition for talent agencies.
Keen for their daughter to have an education, Jennifer’s parents
wouldn't let her act until she had graduated from high school. However, the
teenager’s determination and intelligence meant she completed high school
two years early.
"I never considered that I wouldn’t be successful. I never thought, ‘If acting
doesn’t work out I can be a doctor.’ The phrase ‘If it doesn’t work out’ never
popped into my mind. And that dumb determination of being a naive 14-
year-old has never left me,” she says. It was in the Big Apple that Jennifer
was discovered by a photographer. Her photo was taken on the street and
she was subsequently called in for an audition for an advert.
“This guy watched me, and he asked “Can I take you a picture?” she says. ‘‘We didn’t know that that
was creepy, at the time. So we’re like, ‘Sure.’ So he took my mom’s phone number, and all of a sudden all
these (modelling) agencies are calling. And that’s when it all started.”
The agents signed up the contract with 14-year-old.
She ended up spending that whole summer in New York and her first job came in the form of a
commercial for MTV's My Super Sweet 16, which led to other ads for big names such as Burger King and
appearances in TV series.
However, television wasn't enough for the teenage star, and she rapidly set her sights on the big
screen. In 2008 Jennifer starred in Garden Party, The Burning Plain and Poker House. Her performance in
the latter earned her the Outstanding Performance Award from the Los Angeles Film Festival.
Jennifer was delighted to win the part, saying "I'd have walked on hot coals to get it. I thought it was
the best female role ever."

THE MOST UNSUCESSFUL PET RESCUE
Mrs Sarah Greenfield is a seventy years old woman who lives in a cottage in Ireland. She doesn’t live with her
family. Her loyal company is her small black cat. The last two days she was worried. She told her neighbour,
Frank Armstrong she hadn’t seen her pet cat for nearly two days. Frank said he knew where Percy was and
took her to a tall tree in the street. He pointed up at a branch near the top of the tree where Percy was sitting.
Mrs Greenfield called out to her cat but it did not move. Then she asked Frank what she should do. He
suggested that she should telephone the fire brigade and ask them to help. Mrs Greenfield went back to her
house and phoned the local fire station. A kind woman answer the phone and asked the old lady what had
happened and how could she help her. She told her about the cat and asked her if the brigade could come
and save the cat.
Twenty minutes later, a big red fire engine parked outside Mrs Greenfield’s house. Mrs Greenfield showed the
fire officer where Percy was sitting in the tree. The fire officer asked Mrs Greenfield what the cat liked eating.
She said that Percy’s favourite food was sardines. The fire officer said it was always difficult to catch cats in
that situation because they are frightened and asked her if she had got any sardines. Mrs Greenfield opened a
tin of sardines and gave it to the fire officer. The fire officer extended the tall ladders on the fire engine and
climbed up to the cat. He held out the open tin of sardines and called to the cat. Percy was very hungry and he
could smell the sardines. He moved towards the fire officer who caught him easily. From the top of the ladder,
the fire officer called to Mrs Greenfield and told her he had caught the cat. Mrs Greenfield said she was very
happy and thanked the fire officer as he was climbing down the ladder.
After the fire officer had handed the cat to Mrs Greenfield, she put it on the ground with the tin of sardines. Mrs
Greenfield ask the firefighter if he wanted to have a cup of tea and a slice of cake at her house. The fire officer
accepted the invitation and they walked to her house. Twenty minutes later, after two cups of tea and three
slices of cake, the fire officer got into the big red fire engine and started the engine to drive away.
Unfortunately, as he was reversing the fire engine, he ran over the cat and killed it.
