REVISED:
PRODUCT: Centaur, Saturn
MODEL(S): Compressor, Mechanical Drive
Specifics:
Purpose:
To inspect for rust damage in gear units. Rust discovered in these high speed gear units must be
evaluated by Solar before the initial start of gas turbine equipment is made.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The inspection is performed by removing the gear inspection plate and by rotating the gears by
hand or by using a lever as necessary to view the condition of the gears. See figure 1 for inspection
plate locations.
The most critical areas to be inspected are the loaded sides of the gear teeth. See figure 2 for loaded
teeth identification. Direct close attention to loaded area where teeth come into mesh. Be sure to
rotate each gear through one complete revolution for complete inspection. A notation of the general
condition of the housing interior must also be made at this time. Record any presence of rust.
Report Immediately any evidence of rust damage to the local Power Systems Support Office.
When contacting Solar Power Systems Support give the original sales order number, unit model
number, unit serial number, gear unit part number, gear unit serial number, and an estimate of rust
damage. When stating rust damage give percentage of gear tooth face affected, also give expected
start up date of package.
Prior to installing the inspection cover plate, spray entire housing interior and gear teeth with a hand
sprayer filled with turbine engine lubricating oil.
Reinstall the gear unit inspection plate, using PERMATEX #2 sparingly on the sealing surface.
Assure that all lube oil drain, pressure ports, input and output openings are protected from moisture
entrance.
