doned with long histories of mis-

are aware that there are many chil-
dren, yes even in beautiful Hunting-
ton Beach, Surf City USA, who
have been abused, neglected and
yes, even abandoned. What a rip-
roaring idea: why not put these vul-
nerable horses that respond to a
caring "pat" or brush with young
people perhaps in need of the same
sort of caring exchange? That briefly
is what Free Rein Foundation is all
about.
The Free Rein Foundation’s horse
rescue and equine-assisted learning
and wellness programs achieved re-
markable success at their Cattle
Baron’s Ball on Saturday, Aug. 12th,
at the picturesque Huntington Central
Park Equestrian Center’s event venue,
The Red Horse Barn. Thanks to the
extraordinary generosity of attendees,
sponsors, and donors, the Cattle
Baron’s Ball raised an impressive sum
of $95,000.
“We pulled out all the stops this year
to make the Cattle Baron’s Ball an
extra-special and immersive event for
our guests,” said Executive Director
Judy Alexander, who co-chaired the
event with Maria Bereket and Sheila
Holliday. “With the incredible success
of the ball, we have already started to
plan our 2024 event with the support
and recognition of new local partner-
ships and community sponsors from
our surrounding community,”
added Foundation President and
Co-founder Justine Makoff.
The charity event welcomed a
distinguished and diverse crowd of
more than 200 attendees and sup-
porters. Special guests added pres-
tige to the occasion, including:

• Huntington Beach Mayor Pro

Tem, Gracey VanDerMark
• Huntington Beach City Attor-
ney, Michael Gates
• Owner/Operator of Huntington Central Park Equestrian

U.S. National Park:

T he words “For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People” stretch across the
northern entrance of our nation’s first national park, Yellowstone.
According to the Department of Interior, the goal of the National Park Service
is, and has always been, to keep our wild places protected and unimpaired for
future generations. To that end, more than 400 areas and 84 million acres span-
ning all 50 states and several unincorporated territories of the United States,
protect America’s greatest natural treasures. With 61 of those wilderness areas
toting National Park designation, it can be tricky trying to pick which park to
visit.
So, to help you determine which parks should be higher on your bucket list,
we ranked each park based on their overall accessibility, facilities and accom-
modations, trails and attractions, crowds, and, of course, overall ‘wow’ factor,
which we measured by photo ops and stunning scenery.
Keep in mind, it’s almost impossible to say that one is better than the next —
there’s truly something special about each one of our national parks.

Isle Royale National Park

MICHIGAN
You don’t necessarily have to fly to Alaska to seek utter solitude. There are
very few places left in the lower 48 that are as rugged and remote as Isle Royale,
Michigan. Nearly 20 mammals, including wolves and moose, roam within the
boundaries of this 132,000-acre island wilderness, frequently making an ap-
pearance on the popular hiking trails. The few people that venture to the island
each year arrive by ferry, boat or seaplane and set up camp at one of 36 camp-
sites.
The island offers over 165-miles of trail, scuba diving to shipwrecks in Lake
Superior, kayaking or canoeing along an intricate network of waterways, and
if the stars align, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive northern lights.
Isle Royale is only open from April 16th to October 31st. Due to the unpre-
dictable waters and weather of Lake Superior, visitors are expected to plan and
be prepared for unanticipated shifts in the environment. Also, due to the remote
nature of the park, some services and resources, including potable water, may
not be available on the island.

Don’t you wish your parents were this cool? This adorable

Door-to-door In West Virginia, 1960

Though largely forgotten today, religion and religious bigotry played a
major role in the 1960 Presidential race and Democratic Primary. John F.
Kennedy was a charismatic and serious contender to be the Chief Ex-
ecutive, but he would have to break a major barrier to do so: no Roman
Catholic had ever been elected president in the nation's 180-year history.
In late 1959, Kennedy was polling better than his Democratic primary
rival, Hubert H. Humphrey, in West Virginia. But by April 1960, he was
20 points down. The dramatic swing was explained to the candidate by
his advisers: "No one in West Virginia knew you were a Catholic in De-
cember. Now they know."
Anti-Catholic sentiment threatened to deny Kennedy West Virginia, and
even the overall nomination, so Kennedy went all-out in the Mountain
State. Everywhere he went, he listened to the concerns of its poor, work-
ing-class protestants, and took special care to outline plans for how a Ken-
nedy presidency would benefit them. Kennedy also had much more money
to spend and a better organization in the state than Humphrey. The young

Prosecco Versus
Champagne: What to
Know and How to Choose
Sparkling wines aren’t all alike.
These are the key similarities and differences
between these two main types.

Prosecco is a type of sparkling wine crafted in the Veneto re-
gion of Italy. The main grape used in prosecco production is
glera, which must compose a minimum of 85% of the wine. Pro-
secco is made via the Charmat method, otherwise known as the
tank method, in which the wine undergoes a secondary fermen-
tation in a pressurized vat to create its bubbles. On the palate,
prosecco is bright and fresh, and it is generally best consumed
within the first few years after it’s made. Most prosecco is bot-
tled young and as a non-vintage wine, which is to say, they are
made from blends of base wines from multiple years.

What Is Champagne?
Champagne is a style of sparkling wine made in the Cham-
pagne region of northeastern France. The main grapes of the re-
gion are chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier; a handful
of lesser-known varieties are also permitted, though these are
rarely used. To achieve its bubbles, Champagne is produced via
the “traditional” method, otherwise known as the méthode
champenoise, which involves allowing the wine to undergo a
secondary fermentation in the bottle. The wine then ages for a
minimum of 12 months on the lees in the bottle, which adds tex-
ture, complexity, and toasty notes. Less-expensive Champagnes
are often non-vintage, while vintage Champagne, made with
wine from a single year’s harvest, is available and often more
expensive.
Champagne is produced in a variety of styles, from bone-dry,
called brut nature or zero dosage, to sweet, referred to as demi-
sec. The structure and acidity found in Champagne means these
wines can either be consumed immediately after they are re-
leased for sale or “cellared” to age them, which adds complexity
to the wine’s flavors.

FAMOUS MURDERS
THAT REMAIN
UNSOLVED
By Thomm Quackenbush
Despite what television would have you believe, not every mur-
der is solved in under an hour. No matter how much effort police
put into the cases at the time and amateur sleuths do afterward,
some murders will never be solved.
That's not to say that all unsolved murders are created equal. For
some, almost everything about the case is unknown: the culprit,
the victim's identity, the method, the motive. On occasion, the best
the police can tell the public is that someone was definitely killed,
but anything after that is nebulous. With other cases, everyone
knows who did it, but they managed to get acquitted or gave the
police an alibi. In still others, the only reason that witnesses aren't
pointing fingers at the culprit is that these fingers will be immedi-
ately cut off — along with their heads.
However, for what little good it did for the victims, sometimes
being unable to solve a murder drives those left behind to improve
the world so that no one else has to suffer the same fate.

VILLISCA AX MURDERS:
THE KILLER IS IN YOUR ATTIC

Shutterstock

As a website about the murders explains, on June 13, 1912, two

adults and six children in Villisca, Iowa, met their ends in the
Moore home via an ax belonging to the father, Josiah Moore. Ac-
cording to Smithsonian Magazine, the killer then covered their
ruined faces with clothing before concealing every mirror or ex-
posed glass with cloths.
The townspeople went into an appropriate state of paranoia, add-
ing locks to doors and carrying weapons everywhere. They all sus-
pected each other, even though it was difficult to imagine that any
of their neighbors were capable of this savagery. Police inter-
viewed hundreds, but it came to nothing concrete.
According to the Villisca murders website, the suspects included
Josiah Moore's former boss, Iowa state senator Frank Jones, en-
raged that Moore had opened his own business — and was pos-
sibly sleeping with Jones' daughter-in-law. Aside from Jones was
a reverend who went insane, a random drifter, and a cocaine-ad-
dled serial killer for hire named William Mansfield. The last man
is a promising culprit, as he allegedly murdered his wife, baby,
father-, and mother-in-law two years after the Villisca murders. If
not him, there was another serial killer, Henry Moore (no relation),
in the area. He was convicted of killing his mother and grand-
mother with an ax months after the Villisca murders.
Whoever the killer was, they took their secret to the grave. Re-
stored to its original condition, the home is now on the National
Registrar of Historic Places and is open for tours.

W
hen an actor plays a role, he or she does everything in their power to really get
into it, to feel as that person would feel, and to portray those feelings on the film.
But what happens when an actor lands a role based on a real person?

Changeling (2008)
Angelina Jolie stars in this 2008 film produced by Clint Eastwood. The film tells the
strange tale of a woman named Christine Collins, who lives in California in the 1920s. When
her missing son is returned to her, she realizes that it isn’t in fact her son, but when she tries
to explain this to authorities, she is labeled as insane and locked up in a mental hospital. The
real Christine Collins rose to prominence after her story made national headlines. It was dis-
covered during the Trial Testimony of Gordon that her son was ultimately killed in the Wine-
ville Chicken Coop Murders led by a man named Gordon Stewart Northcott. He was
executed in San Quentin in 1930.
MAKIN WAVES SALON The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, where it opened to critical ac-
claim. It was nominated for several awards at the 81st Academy Awards, including Best
Capital Actress in a Leading Role for Jolie’s portrayal of Collins.

Todd Robinson writes and directs this 2006 neo-noir film based on the story of the “Lonely
Hearts Killers”, Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez. Jared Leto stars as Fernandez, op-
posite Salma Hayek as Beck, to portray the couple who terrorized the country on a crime
spree murdering over a dozen women in the 1940s. While the couple was ultimately con-
victed of only one murder, they were suspected of being responsible for 20 victims during
the spree between 1947 and 1949.
Unfortunately, the movie made less than $3 million dollars at the box office, not too much
more than one of the star’s salary alone. John Travolta also appeared in the film playing one
of the detectives who is hot on the couple’s heels.

Seabiscuit (2003)
This 2003 American sports film is based on the 1995 best-selling book by the same name
written by Laura Hillenbrand. The movie is directed (and written) by Gary Ross, and centers
around a champion racehorse named Seabiscuit, during the Great Depression. The legendary
horse was overlooked and completely underestimated and never considered an adequate
racehorse. After his unexpected success, he became a symbol of hope and strength during
the Great Depression.
The film stars Tobey Maguire Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper, and features Elizabeth
Banks. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including the award for Best Picture,
32 and Best Writing. The film's cinematography received plenty of its own accolades, including
an Oscar nomination, and a win from the American Society of Cinematographers.
