Separation Process Laboratory II (SETK 4761)

Laboratory Safety Agreement Form

Safety is the most important aspect of the laboratory. You can cause an injury to yourself or to
someone else by being careless. Ask the laboratory instructor if you need any assistance. These
safety rules must be read and understood by all students working in this laboratory. You may not
start any experimental work until this form has been completely read and signed.

A. ATTIRE
1. Lab coats and proper attire must be worn at all times while in the laboratory building. This
is applicable whether you are actually working on an experiment or in the laboratory for
any other purpose.
2. Contact lenses are not allowed. Even when worn under safety goggles, various fumes may
accumulate under the lens and cause serious injuries or blindness.
3. Wear shoes that cover your whole feet preferably made of water-resistant materia l.
Sandals, slippers, open-toed shoes and shorts or short skirts are not allowed.
4. Confine long hair and loose clothing when in the laboratory.
5. Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by the experiment.
6. Ensure a face mask is worn at all times in the laboratory.

B. CONDUCT AND BEHAVIOUR

1. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited in the laboratory.
2. Please ensure to be punctual for the laboratory session. It is advised to arrive at least 5
minutes before the session starts.
3. Place bags and other personal items in designated spaces to ensure that the laboratory floor
and walkways are free of any obstructions.
4. Determine all potential physical and chemical hazards as well as the safety precautions
that apply to your apparatus before beginning any experiment.
5. No unauthorised experiments in the absence of the instructor and assistant engineer are to
be performed. If you are curious about trying a procedure not directly covered in course of
study, consult with the instructor and assistant engineer.
6. Outdoor sampling activities must be conducted in groups, not alone and conducted during
safe weather conditions.
7. Do not make any repairs or alterations to the equipment without prior notification and
permission of the instructor and assistant engineer.
8. Never taste anything. Never directly smell the source of any vapour or gas; instead by
means of your cupped hand, waft a small sample to your nose. Do not inhale these vapours
but take in only enough to detect an odour if one exists.
9. Avoid distracting or startling any other students or indulging in any other acts of
carelessness or playing around in the laboratory.
10. Do not remove or transfer any laboratory apparatus or chemicals to another laboratory
without specific permission from the instructor and assistant engineer.
11. Always wash your hands before and after leaving the laboratory even if you have been
wearing gloves.
12. Identify where the safety and first-aid equipment are located. These include fire
extinguishers, fire blankets, eye-wash stations, showers, spillage control kit and first aid
kit.
13. Never leave experiments unattended while they are in progress.
14. Do not pipet solutions by mouth.
15. Beware of hot glass, equipment, and surfaces. Wear appropriate gloves when handling
such surfaces/equipment.
16. When working at heights, wear a safety helmet and take care not to slip and fall.
17. Never modify any parts of the equipment, auxiliary equipment, piping and fittings without
supervision and permission of the instructor and assistant engineer.
18. Before leaving the laboratory:
i) Return equipment and chemicals to their proper places.
ii) Be sure to replace the lids to all containers.
iii) Clean up your work area.
iv) Clean all glassware used in the experiment.
v) Dispose of any waste as instructed by the instructor and assistant engineer.

C. HANDLING OF CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENT

1. Never use any laboratory equipment unless you are trained and authorised to do so.
2. Never leave burners, water, boiler, heater, or any laboratory equipment running
unattended. Turn them off whenever you leave the workstation. Be sure that they are
turned/shut off when you leave the laboratory.
3. Consider all chemicals to be hazardous unless you are instructed otherwise. Read and
understand the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before using any chemicals.
4. Excess chemicals are never to be returned to stock bottles. If you take too much, dispose
of the excess properly according to proper waste handling.
5. Many common chemicals (e.g. alcohols and acetone), are highly flammable. Do not use
them anywhere near open flames.
6. Always pour acids into water. If you pour water into acid, the heat of reaction will cause
the water to explode into steam, sometimes violently, and the acid will splatter.
7. In case of chemical spillage, clean up the spillage properly using the spillage control kit.
8. Never point a test tube or any vessel that you are heating at yourself or anyone else.
9. Dispose of all chemicals properly. Waste containers are provided at the designated place.
Unless you are explicitly told otherwise, assume that only water may be poured into the
laboratory sinks.
10. Clear all broken glassware immediately, taking care not to cut yourself and dispose of the
broken glass properly at the designated place.
11. If corrosive chemicals are spilled on the clothing or any parts of the body, immediate ly
wash with a lot of water. Use the shower if necessary.
12. Emergency showers are installed in certain laboratories. Do not place anything under the
shower.
13. If the chemical is spilled in the eye, it should immediately be washed out thoroughly with
water using the eyewash.
14. Ensure that gloves are worn throughout conduction of the experiment.
15. Dispose used gloves properly after use. Do not leave the laboratory with gloves on even
for a short while. Spilled chemicals on the gloves may contaminate other places.

D. ELECTRICAL SAFETY
1. Obtain permission before operating any high voltage equipment.
2. Maintain an unobstructed access to all electrical panels.
3. Do not make any electrical modifications in the laboratory.
4. Avoid using extension cords whenever possible. If unavoidable, use a heavy-duty one that
is electrically grounded, with its own fuse, and install it safely. It should not go under
doors, across aisles, be hung from the ceiling, or plugged into other extension cords.
5. Never, ever modify, attach or otherwise change any high voltage equipment.
6. Notify the instructor and assistant engineer if there are any frayed cables and if the
equipment is behaving abnormally.

E. HANDLING OF GASES AND HIGH PRESSURE VESSELS

1. Notify the instructor and assistant engineer immediately if there is any smell and/or sound
that is out of place.
2. Never operate over the pressure range. Be aware of the maximum operating range.
3. Never leave any gas running unattended. Ensure the pressure gauge is at 0 gauge pressure
whenever you leave the workstation or laboratory.

F. ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES

1. Notify the instructor and assistant engineer immediately in case of an accident, damage of
equipment, or any unusual incidents.
2. If a person’s clothing catches on fire, prevent him/her from running. If he/she is close
enough, put him/her under the safety shower because it is more effective than a blanket. If
not, make him/her lie down and smother the flames by rolling, wrapping with the fire
blanket. Never turn a carbon dioxide extinguisher on a person.
3. If a fire breaks out, turn off all burners and remove solvents if time allows. Please identify
the location of fire extinguishers and hydrant hose (if available) and use them properly.
4. Point the extinguisher at the base of the flames. Very small fires can be put out with a
damp towel by smothering. Only after the safety of every person is assured should the
matter of extinguishing the fire be considered.
5. Please identify the location of all emergency exits on the first day of entering the
laboratory.
6. In case of an emergency that needs building evacuation, please proceed to the assembly
area in an orderly manner.
7. Emergency numbers are displayed in the laboratory area and provided below. Please save
them in case of emergencies later.
8. Emergency numbers:
