Specific Competences Test: Speaking

Specific Competence 2: Presentation
1 Read the advert below. Imagine that you want to send a voice message to the podcast.

Are you into art?

To celebrate art week, we’d like to know how
teenagers feel about art for our episode Me and Art.
Send us a voice message to tell us more.

The Teen Life Podcast

a Think and plan

First, think about the questions and make notes on the lines below.
• Do you like looking at art? When was the last time you visited an art gallery or museum?
• Do you like creating art? Why / Why not? Did you like drawing and painting when you were younger?
• Think about a piece of art that you know, in your home, school, town / city, or in a book (e.g. a painting,
an illustration, a sculpture or some street art).
• Describe the piece of art with adjectives (e.g. colourful, unusual, enormous, etc.).
• Do you like this piece of art? Why / Why not?

b Practise your presentation with a partner. Speak slowly and clearly. Think of two positive things
to say about your partner's presentation.

c Now do your presentation or create your voice message. (Your teacher will tell you which one of
these to do.) Talk about you and art.

Specific Competence 3: Spoken Interaction
2 Work in pairs. Imagine you are in an art gallery and one of you is blind or visually impaired. Describe
one of the paintings below.

First, choose one painting. Take turns to describe your painting using phrases for describing a scene.
Then change roles.
• Say what you can see.
• Say where things are.
• Say what is happening.

Close your eyes while your partner is talking.

Remember: When you don’t know what something is called in English, try to explain it in your own
words. Is it like something else? Can you say what it’s made of? Can you describe where and how people
use it?

Specific Competence 4: Mediation
3 Imagine you receive the message below from an English-speaking friend. You want to go to the
exhibition and invite a friend. Your friend doesn’t speak English. Tell your friend about the exhibition
in your own language and ask them if they want to come with you.

Hi! There’s an art exhibition at the

International School this weekend. Do
you want to come with me? It’s all the art
students’ work. I go every year and the
art is always so interesting! Paintings,
sculptures, etc. It’s on all weekend, from
9 to 5, but maybe we can go on Saturday
morning? Bring a friend if you want. X
