Steps in Solving Problems involving Angles of Elevation and Depression

• Draw an illustration that visualizes the problem and label it using the
given information.
• Formulate a ratio of a given measure and the variable representing what
is being asked in the problem.
• Form an equation using the formulated ratio and the trigonometric
function defined by the ratio.
• Solve the solution of the equation and the solution of the problem
• Label the final answer correctly.
Example: To find the height of a tree, Maya measures the angle of elevation
from a point on the ground to the top of the tree to be 30°. The
distance of the tree from the point is 12 meters. How high is the
tree?
𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
Solution: Let x be the height of the tree. tan 𝐴 = 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡

Example: Raya is walking in a park. A park security guard is standing in a
watch tower that overlooks the park. He sees Raya at an angle of
depression measuring 38°. How far is Raya from the base of the
tower if the tower and the guard’s eye level has a combined
measure of 75 feet?
Solution: Let x be the distance of Raya
from the base of the tower. 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒

Seatwork: Answer the following problems.

1. From the top of a smaller building, the angle of elevation to

the top of a taller building is 52° and the angle of depression
to its base is 38°. If the two buildings are 40 meters apart, what
is the height of the taller building?

2. A ladder leaning against a wall makes an angle of 80° with the

ground. If the foot of the ladder is 7 feet from the base of the
wall, what is the length of the ladder?
