THE CELL AND

ITS STRUCTURES
AND FUNCTIONS
WEEK 1 GENERAL BIOLOGY 1
THE CELL AND ITS
STRUCTURES AND
FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVES:
1. explain the postulate using the
history of cell development
2. Identify the parts and function
of the cell
3. Compare the cell to a factory .
Which is alive? Which is not?
How essential is the cell
to life?
CELL is the basic
unit of life

Guide Questions
1.What are the 3 postulates of the cell theory?
2.How did the microscope help the scientist in
their concept about the cell?
3. Why did Hooke used the term “cell” to
describe his observation?
4. How does the discovery of the cell help in
the concept of life?

Guide Questions
1. Enumerate and describe the parts of
the cell that is common to all types of
the cell.
2. Enumerate and describe the other
parts of the cell.
3. Differentiate the parts of the plant and
animal cell.
PARTS AND STRUCTURE OF THE CELL
DNA

Genetic
Material of the
cell
CYTOPLASM

It is the gel like

material where
organelles are
suspended.
RIBOSOME

Site of protein
synthesis

A semi-
permeable
membrane that
regulate the
entry and exit
of the
substances in
and out of the
cell

Cell Wall

• Only in plant cells & bacteria

• Outer membrane that supports
& protects cells

Endoplasmic Reticulum

• Moves materials around in cell

• Smooth type: lacks ribosomes
• Rough type (pictured): ribosomes
embedded in surface

Mitochondria

• Produces energy through chemical reactions – breaking down fats

& carbohydrates
• Controls level of water and other materials in cell
• Recycles and decomposes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates

Golgi Bodies
• Protein 'packaging plant'
• Move materials within the
cell
• Move materials out of the
cell

Lysosome
• Digestive 'plant' for
proteins, fats, and
carbohydrates
• Removes waste
• Cell breaks down if
lysosome explodes

Secretory Vesicle

• Use to transport and

release secretory
materials such as
neurotransmitters and
hormones.

Chloroplast
• Usually found in plant cells
• Contains green chlorophyll
• Where photosynthesis takes
place
