GENDER TYPES: “_______”
LECTURE Different sexual preferences emerge in the modern world and are
gradually accepted in our society. However, human sexuality is a
complex subject, and students may be given contradictory
information. This type of topic is important so that we can better
understand the individuals around us.

The first logical step in any unit is to define terminology, and it is

critical to understand the definition of words so that we, society, can
understand the contemporary world.

Given that the sense of belonging to something is so powerful, some

members of the LGBTQIA++ community prefer labels that correspond
to their identities. A sense of relief frequently follows these labels as
someone discovers their identity. Others, on the other hand, are
content with who they are and see no reason to use labels or identify
with larger groups with similar identities. We have to know that labels
are not required, but they are essential.

There are lots of terms already that use for identifying sexual
preferences and here is a partial list: Figure 1

OBJECTIVES ● Aims to identify the different gender types existing in our modern

GENDER STEREOTYPES: “_______”

LECTURE GENDER ROLE & STEREOTYPE:

Gender roles refers to the standard determined by the society on

how should a specific gender should act within the community. It is
mainly influence by social, environmental and cultural factors which
already exists even way back then which results in creating
boundaries on what is appropriate and inappropriate for a specific
sex pressuring individuals to follow this idea.

Gender roles and stereotyping coincide as stereotyping exists

because of the model created within the community that tackles on
how should an individual act depending on their gender like for
example, people usually think that a man should be manly, and
brute so some may judge a man if he was the complete opposite of
their idea of the characteristic of a man.

Often perceived roles of men in society:

● They should be the leader - Even in the workplace, they are

frequently viewed as a person who can lead, as they are
perceived as a decision-maker.
● Religious leaders - Men are frequently seen as capable leaders
due to the concept of masculinity.
● Provider - They tend to be associated with the role of provider,
whether at home or in the community, because they are seen as
more capable of earning a living for their family.
● Protectors - Because they are perceived as masculine, they
should be physically strong and capable of protecting others.

Challenges faced by men within the society:

● They are under pressure to display masculinity because they

are perceived as a strong individual, which often leads to
them concealing their problems. So, in order to be considered
a "real man," they must be emotionally and physically strong.
● Others may perceive being too clean for a man as
inappropriate, such as having a skin care routine or wearing
clothes associated with femininity.

Often perceived roles of women in society:

● Backbone of the family - They are expected to support, care

for, and nurture their family, which includes caring for their
children.

● Household chores - Even back then, they were expected to

be at home doing housework such as cooking, washing
clothes, and cleaning.

Challenges faced by women within the society:

● They are frequently discriminated in the workplace because
men are viewed as physically and mentally strong, whereas
women are viewed as weak and inferior.

● Filipinas are frequently expected to behave in a manner

associated with "Maria Clara" characteristics, which are
demure and innocent.

● Women are frequently expected to dress femininely and are

judged or discriminated against if they wear boyish clothing.

OBJECTIVES ● To identify the gender roles and the stereotyping experienced by

different sexual preference.
● Define and assess the concept of gender as a social construct.

MATERIALS ● Ballpen (Black)

GENDER SENSITIVITY AND INCLUSIVITY: “_______”
LECTURE Life's most inevitable and difficult phase is always growing up; it
can be challenging and demanding. As per national data, it is even
harder to grow up being part of the LGBTQ+ community, especially
growing up with a culture that doesn't completely accept lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other genders (The Annie E.
Casey Foundation, 2023).

In our today’s society, individuals and organizations are working

towards making a progress for the betterment of the LGBTQ+
community. Although some progress has been accomplished,
information brought by international and local news stations and
social media such as facebook and twitter, we know that
discrimination, harassment, and prejudice against LGBTQ+ society
are still rampant. Excluding LGBTQ+ individuals in many
circumstances can still be seen today. Numerous workplaces,
schools, and other places are still not practicing gender sensitivity
and inclusivity. Because of that, many LGBTQ+ people are still
deprived of their rights and opportunities.

To start practicing gender sensitivity and inclusivity, it is best to

start with ourselves. Accept that you can be a better person by
being open-minded and willing to unlearn many of the harmful
habits that we have acquired, mainly in our culture and both in our
personal and professional lives. If we start to work towards that, we
can start to practice inclusivity and limit our exclusionary behavior by
engaging in simple conversations (Curtis, 2020, as stated by Gosier,
2020). In the end, we can start to understand and gradually accept
the LGBTQ+ community in our society.

OBJECTIVES ● To understand and raise awareness regarding the exclusion of

LGBTQ+ in today’s society
● To be able to practice sense of sensitivity and inclusivity
regarding gender

MATERIALS ● Bond paper/Oslo paper

● Pencil

● Coloring materials

ACTIVITY

Slogan Making: “Equality is for everyone”

Instruction:

In 15-20 minutes, make a slogan about gender sensitivity and

inclusivity. Form 6 groups with 5 members each.

Group 1-3

Think of a situation wherein LGBTQ+ should be INCLUDED in our

society.
Group 4-6

Think of a situation wherein you see LGBTQ+ is EXCLUDED in our

society.

REFLECTION Processing questions:

Group 1-3

1. Based on your slogan, why do you think LGBTQ+ should be

included in our society?
2. Aside from the work of other groups, what other situations do
you think LGBTQ+ should be included?

Group 4-6

1. Based on your slogan, why do you think some people are still
not considering LGBTQ+ to include in our society?
2. As a student, what do you think you can do to make them
understand and accept LGBTQ+ in today’s society?
