B
aringo can best be described as a Baringo
land with two faces. One side of the Governor
county is lush green, with hundreds Benjamin Cheboi
of indigenous trees and food crops thriving.
The other is extremely hot and dry, with
shrubs and other desert plants just surviving.
The county is home to four magnificent
lakes namely Baringo, Bogoria, 94 and
Kamnarok, which are some of the main
tourist attractions.
A few kilometres from Baringo town,
one sees livestock grazing in the fields
and children playing in their homesteads,
painting a picture of tranquility.
But Baringo is one of the counties where
the government recently deployed the
military in an operation to end banditry
dubbed Komesha Uhalifu North Rift.
Cattle rustling, banditry and other forms
of insecurity challenges have clouded the
beauty that is Baringo.
“It is saddening that when the name
Baringo is mentioned, all people think about
is insecurity. Baringo is a county of diversity
and we have a rich culture and wonderful
people,” said Governor Benjamin Cheboi.
The governor believes that the insecurity
challenges are all to do with land ownership.
Therefore, the county has embraced Geo-
graphic Information System (GIS) mapping
technology to help resolve the two problems,
and it is winning, one map a time.
Using the technology, the county has
adjudicated 40 per cent of its land, but
60 per cent is not, meaning it is owned by
anyone.
In four areas – Tiaty East, Tiaty West,
Baringo North and Baringo South – less
than 2 per cent of land is adjudicated, said
Mr Cheboi.
The communities there, therefore, believe
that the land belongs to anyone and the
strongest utilises a specific area unless they
move on. This had led to constant fights
over land use.

fights over land using mapping technology communities in the county were in constant
conflict over a contested land boundary.
Therefore, members of the communities
were unable to utilise the land due to the
conflict.
“A majority of the cases in the area were
land disputes between members of the two
communities. Myself I had land on both
sides and I could not use any due to the
conflict. There was very little development
in the region and people lacked basic things
such as food,” said Julius Korpira, a Senior
Assistant Chief.
Solomon Sokolinyang, the chairman of
Chesra Community Land Group, said the
conflict that started in 1976, has now been
resolved thanks to the use of technology.
Chesra’s 1,474 members currently own
10,635ha and Chemwochoi’s 650 4,500ha,
after the mapping was done.
“We now have peace in the area. Any
member of the community who is above
18 years is included in the community land
group and has a say on how the land should
be developed,” said Korpira.
Following the resolution of the conflict,
members of the communities have been able
to farm and know their land boundaries.
“We have planted trees that we do not cut
down so that everyone knows the boundary
and peace is maintained. On the farm, I
have maize, beans, millet and further keep
chickens,” said Chemoya, a member of
