Broken Needle Control Policy & Procedure

A Needle Control Procedure:

Purpose

To prevent a needle (or part of one) from getting struck inadvertently into a finished made-ups putting at risk
the safety of our consumers. To proceed the method of ensuing all parts of sewing needles that are broken
during the sewing process are recovered and disposed of properly.

Scope

This procedure applies to.,

Responsibility

The machine operator, Production Supervisor, Instructor, Mechanics, In process Facilitator, Quality Supervisor
and Quality Manager are responsible for assuring that this procedure is followed and to take proper actions to
avoid any hazardous situations (for both employees and consumers ) regarding needle handling at the sewing
facility.

Work Procedure

 Call & Inform the Supervisor / Mechanic.


 Check through Oil tank, Feed dog, Shuttle, Nearby Panels, Floor etc.
 Tailor must try and locate all fragments of the Broken Needle.
 If necessary, use a Magnet and trace the missing, Fragment of Broken Needle.
 When all the Fragments are found, inform the Feeding, Helper to paste it instantly in the Broken
Needle Log sheet
 Only the Mechanic or Supervisor must fix the new Needle in its Needle bar.
 Nearby Surrounding, Panels, if necessary.
 When all the needle Fragments are not found, then inform the Supervisor Immediately to check the
material to pass through flatbed Metal Detector along with entire lot of goods which are produced in
that line for any possible Needle-metal Contamination.
 If found the needle then paste in Broken Needle Log- If not found the needle then clearly specify the
necessary corrective action taken in the broken needle log.
 Operators should not possess any spare needles.
 Replacement needles should be stored in a locked closet.
 Worn out needles should be disposed off in a sealed container.
 Broken or used needles should not be around machines or on Factory floor.
 Pins, Staples, Wire or Metal clips should not be used in the building, sewing, and process.
 All scissors and trimmers shall be tied to the relevant work tables

A needle control procedure file is located on the production floor. One person has the responsibility to look
after this file and they will have a stock of varying types of needles that are required for the sewing floor.
These needles are kept in a box that can be locked and should be kept locked all times.

When a machinist breaks their needle, they must locate every piece of this broken needle. Once they have all
the pieces, this needle is taken by the Supervisor to the person who has the needle procedure file. This person
will literally stick this needle into the file. They will fill in the following details beside it:

1. The date and time the needle was bought for a replacement
2. Which sewing section the machine on,
3. What type of machine it is,
4. The operators name and the number
5. A space for the broken needle to be attached to the page.
6. The Supervisor signature and the needle no which has to be issued as a replacement.

If however the machinist cannot find all the parts of the needle then the made-ups that is being stitched is
examined for the missing part. If this missing part still can not be found then the entire bundle at m/c made-
ups in the area of that machine are picked up and examined.

The sewing floor is also checked. Once the part is found then the procedure mentioned above is called out, so
that a new needle can be obtained and production can proceed. It, however the needle part cannot be found
then the entire bundle at m/c made-ups that where picked up in the same area as the machine are sent to the
metal detector.
