One the job in my internship involved the assembly and installation of switches and outlets,

along with the replacement of faulty ones, within the classrooms and hallways of the Technological

University of the Philippines – Manila. The first 2 weeks of my internship is mostly focusing on

inspection and replacement of outlets and switches. This task took place in the very spaces that

students and faculty utilize daily as preparation for the incoming school year. It shows us the

important role that switches play in the functionality of electrical systems in our university. This job

seems to be easy but must be taken seriously, even the slightest error could have negative

consequences. Each component had to be handled with care to ensure the safety, long-term

functionality and reliability of the lighting system in our university.

Many of the switches in our university were not only old but some of them are also in a state

of disrepair which needs an urgent replacement. This emphasized the importance of comprehensive

electrical maintenance and upgrades within the university to ensure the safety and functionality of

these spaces since it will be used daily by students and faculty members. Our involvement with my

fellow interns in assembling, installing, and replacing switches in the educational environment

of the

spaces utilized by students and faculty. This addition of rooms is carefully monitored by our

supervisor and field electricians to accommodate the evolving needs of these academic departments

and to provide students and faculty with the necessary tools for effective teaching and learning.

In relation with switches, the inspection and replacement of convenience outlets was another

part of my internship experience in electrical maintenance in our university. The inspection process of

convenience outlet requires carefulness because of potential electrical hazard that might be present in

the area. Our task is to examine each outlet for signs of wear and tear, exposed wiring, or any other

issues that could cause danger to users’ safety and its functionality. During this task, the knowledge

about electrical engineering safety is taken into consideration for understanding the importance of

thorough examinations in identifying potential hazards. When a damaged or broken outlet was

identified, the electrician will assist us for its replacement and ensuring proper connections and safety

measures were in place. Inspecting and replacing outlets and switches in a school building requires a

lot energy due to the sheer number of rooms and extensive hallways that required attention. The sense

of accomplishment and seeing improvements of the school electrical system resulting from our efforts

provided a deep sense of fulfillment and motivation to continue our task in providing an electrical

maintenance and service.

The other task that we did for the duration of the first week up to fourth week as an intern is

the light fixture repair, installation, and troubleshooting, and for me it is an incredibly enjoying

experience. The task of light fixture repair, installation, and troubleshooting at the Technological

University of the Philippines (TUP) gave us challenge and one of which was the size and scale of the

university itself. TUP, housing various colleges such as COE, CAFA, COS, CLA CIE and CIT,

contained numerous buildings, classrooms, corridors, and common areas that required inspection and

maintenance. Second

many that is why our head electrician divided us to do the job efficiently. These fixtures, used for

many years, exhibit damages, from flickering bulbs to malfunctioning wiring and broken fixtures.

Aside from inspection, diagnosing issues with these lighting systems became an essential part of our

role since other light fixtures only need repairing so thorough inspection is required in order to utilize

the availability of light fixtures. In anticipation of the upcoming weeks, which were set for both the

replacement of broken fixtures and the installation of lighting systems in new rooms, our work must

be fast and efficient in order to maximize testing process for a multitude of light fixtures. This job of

testing and inspection was crucial in ensuring that our upcoming installation projects would proceed

smoothly and according to schedule.

One essential equipment that we used for light fixture diagnosis was the test light, which

played a pivotal role in inspecting the light fixtures functionality. The test light is a handheld device

equipped with a probe in which we can use to supply energy to the light fixtures. It allowed us to

determine whether electrical current was flowing to the fixture correctly and if there were any

interruptions or faults in the wiring. By utilizing this equipment, we carefully examined the various

electrical connections, we could identify areas where repairs or adjustments were needed as well as to

know if it

A key concern in the installation of these tested light fixtures stated by Sir Paul Sapina (Field

Electrician) is the utilization of the appropriate tools and equipment. Due to the large quantity of light

fixtures that need to be installed, our group invested in the tools needed for this job. This includes

screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, electrical tape, and testers. Sir Paul makes sure that we are well

equipped and knowledgeable in terms of proper handling and familiarity with these tools for efficient

and fast installation. The Fixtures that will be installed should be well positioned to provide even and

sufficient illumination, minimizing shadows and maximizing visibility. Sir Paul also provides

information that is essential in determining the best placement for light fixtures within a room or area.

Additionally, we also used power tools like drills securing fixtures to the ceiling or walls. Ensuring

proper wiring and termination is necessary for safe and reliable operation of the installed light

fixtures. Each fixture must be connected correctly, with attention to detail in matching the wiring

components.

Another task that is performed during the following weeks of my internship experience was

the task of laying out conduits, PVC pipes, or tubing within designated partitions, walls, and other

concealed areas for electrical wiring. This process was particularly important, as it involved the

hidden electrical wiring within the rooms and areas in which power were supplied in the various

electrical systems throughout the university. Our tasks extended to the installation of new switches,

of being built. These rooms were located at the College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA), the

College of Science (COS), and the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). This task required attention to

detail, ensuring that the wiring was conducted correctly to complete circuits between electrical boxes.

The proper routing and organization of these wires were essential to ensure that the electrical systems

operated efficiently in order to avoid faulty wiring.

The electricians we worked within our internship were not only highly skilled but also patient,

understanding and willing to share their knowledge in order to get the job done safely and properly.

They provided comprehensive explanations of each task which we can understand quickly, from

conduit layout to PVC pipe bending and wiring. They always emphasize the importance of accuracy

and safety in every step of our work in electrical layout and wiring. Their assistance was particularly

evident during the intricate process of conduit layout. They meticulously demonstrated how to

estimate the bend angles of PVC pipes, choose the appropriate conduit types and how to secure them

properly to avoid future problems due to poor installation.

When it comes to PVC pipe bending, the electricians showed us the artistry behind achieving

consistent and accurate bends. They patiently instructed us on controlling heat temperatures, selecting

the right bending angles, and recognizing the signs that a bend was ready to set. Their mentorship

enabled us to grasp the nuances of PVC pipe bending, ensuring that the conduit system remained

robust and visually appealing. Also, during the wiring phase, the electricians provided hands-on

My internship includes assisting in troubleshooting electrical systems in our university.

During second week of my internship, we aid our head electrician in locating the faulty wiring and

performed troubleshooting. This is a serious task wherein the head electrician does most of the work

and we only provided assistance for him. The head electrician job includes the responsibility of

diagnosing the causes of operating errors in electrical systems, requiring the expert use of appropriate

measuring instruments such as testers and circuit tracers. We provide support in determining the

faulty wiring that causes sparks by tracing the source of the problem using the multimeter and circuit

finder. The skill of an expert electrician in troubleshooting is displayed by our head electrician which

is the ability to pay attention to the smallest of details. He taught us how to spot anomalies,

irregularities, or abnormalities from normal electrical behavior.

In this process, He performed a systematic approach to isolate and identify faults. It starts in

inspection wiring, connectors, and electrical components to detect any signs of damage or

malfunction. He highlighted the importance of having measuring instruments like multimeters and

voltage testers to analyze electrical parameters, such as voltage, current, and resistance. Tracing the

circuit breaker before performing a maintenance is a must to avoid electrocutions. Breakers are

pivotal safety devices within electrical systems, designed to protect against overloads and short

circuits. They sometimes require manual intervention to reset after tripping. We carefully identify the

cause of a breaker trip and we ensure that it was reset correctly to restore electrical power in the areas

One of the skills we gained is wire splicing, which is a fundamental skill in electrical

maintenance, and my internship in Auxiliary service provided me with the ideal platform to apply it.

The process of wire splicing includes connecting two or more electrical wires to establish secure and

efficient electrical connections. Sir Paul taught us to assess the wires that required splicing and how

to splice wire with ease. This involved examining their gauge, insulation type, and their intended

purpose within the electrical system. Understanding the unique characteristics of each wire was vital

in selecting the appropriate splicing method. It is also required to have specific tools and skills to

make the job

safely and right. I quickly grasped the splicing technique that was taught by Sir Paul in which

utilizing only pliers and side cutters. This skill is utilized for every job I mentioned since it is required

for wiring installations.

Another aspect that is important in wire splicing was the proper application of electrical tape.

Before connecting the wires, I learned to assess its condition by looking for any signs of damage or

tear on the insulation. If any damage was detected, it was necessary to address it promptly to maintain

electrical safety since it can cause electrocution if it is energized. Practical hands-on experience

proved through days of working with it which equipped us skills in terms of wire splicing. I carefully

stripped the wire ends and aligned them properly. Ensuring that the stripped portions were of the

correct length and free from any scratches or worn wires was essential to avoid future damage and

hazard. The guidance of Sir Paul during this skill development was instrumental in enhancing our

skills and ensuring the best results.

The installation of wall fans was also part of our task as an intern, which always begin with a

thorough assessment of the fan's intended location. This critical step involved considering various

factors that would determine the fan's effectiveness and safety within the space. Height, positioning,

proper mounting and as well as the electrical access must be considered to ensure both optimal air

distribution. This seemed to be easy, but it was no ordinary task since it requires a high degree of

precision and attention to detail and the type of the wall must also be considered. Every type of a wall

must be partnered with the right type of screw. I managed this task with care and precision, ensuring

that the fan bracket was securely attached to the wall without any damage to it. This was important to

guarantee that it could bear the weight of the fan and absorb the vibrations when it operates.

Nevertheless, what made this installation process a bit challenging was the height factor in

certain areas. Some spaces were situated so high that it was necessary to extend the fan's wiring to

reach the desired location. This required me to draw upon my wire splicing skills, which I had learned

during the course of my internship. Extending the wall fan's wiring involved safely connecting

additional wire lengths to bridge the space between the fan's location and the power source. The

principles of wire splicing that I had acquired were instrumental in ensuring that these extensions

were executed safely and efficiently. As part of the wiring process, I also comply with the importance

of using electrical tape to insulate and protect the exposed conductors. Carefully wrapping the tape

around the connections created a protective barrier, shielding the conductors from moisture and

physical harm. After the of the installation process was undoubtedly an enjoying. The moment when

the wall fan was switched on, the cold it generated filled the room, a deep sense of satisfaction. It is

also fulfilling when the faculty members enjoy the work we had done to give them a better

workplace. The successful installation of the wall fans and light fixture had a positive impact not only

on the physical comfort of the rooms but also on the overall learning atmosphere of the students. As

the new school year approached, there was a sense of readiness and eagerness, knowing that the

students and faculty would benefit from these improvements.

During my SIT program, one of the school-related problems I encountered was the lack of

time allocated for preparation of OJT. The process of identifying, securing, and engaging with a

suitable company for the training period was hard since a lot of other students from other universities

will also be required to do so. It also takes a long time for researching potential

organizations/company, passing formal applications, and scheduling of interviews. For me, the

university's scheduling for this preparatory time for SIT program was notably insufficient, leaving

students with inadequate time to thoroughly explore diverse opportunities. Extending the timeline of

SIT preparation will allow future students to explore deeply into examining potential companies for

internship. They can analyze an organization's culture, values, and work environment, ensuring that

their chosen company for their internship really aligns with their personal and professional ambitions.

This extended preparation phase is vital in helping students make informed decisions about the

companies they wish to apply to, promoting a better match between their interests and the internship.
