Introduction to Arabic Language

Arabic is one of the world’s major languages,


spoken in a broad belt extending from the Arabian
Peninsula across the Fertile Crescent and on to
the Atlantic Ocean. It is the official language of
Saudi Arabia, Yemen, United Arab Emirates,
Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Syria, Jordan,
Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria,
and Morocco, making it the mother tongue of
about 215 million people. In addition many millions
of Muslims in other countries have some
knowledge of Arabic, it being the language of the
holy Quran. In 1974 Arabic was made the sixth
official language of the United Nations.

Lesson 1

Alphabets

 There are 28 letters.

 This lesson is designed to teach the names of all the alphabets.

 Please note that some of these letters are very similar to English letter

sounds e.g. Baa is very close to the letter ‘B’ in the English language,

this is a useful way to remember the sounds of the letters.

 Arabic script is read and ractic from right to left.

Lesson 2

Joining letters
 The table below shows every scenario, i.e. how each letter

will be written in the beginning, middle and end of a word as

well as an example of its joined form and the shape of the

letter by itself.

 The most common patterns you will find below are:

a) All letters are written in their full form if they occur at the

end of a word, some may slightly change shape.

b) Most letters do join to other letters in front of them,

however, there are six letters which do not join to any letter

 Whilst it is important to make an effort to look at the forms above, it is sometimes easier

to look for the patterns rather than each individual letter. For example, the following

groups of letters are very similar in their joined forms, in most cases the only difference

is the position or number of dots used in the letters:

o ‫جـ‬, ‫ حـ‬and ‫خـ‬

o ‫ سـ‬and ‫شـ‬

o ‫ صـ‬and ‫ضـ‬

 Finally, to master the different forms of joining will take some time and it is important to

practice writing whilst learning the Arabic language to become familiar with the script.

Lesson 3

The Single Vowel - Marks

 In Arabic, there are 3 short vowel-marks

 The short vowel-marks enable the letter to make a sound in a

similar way to the English language. In the same way a word

cannot be made in the English language without one of the 5

vowels (a, e, i, o or u), in Arabic one cannot make a word without

a vowel being used.

 We will cover the 3 vowel-marks in Arabic below

 The vowel-marks are the marks below or above the letter Alif in

the examples below, the letter Alif has been used to give you an

idea of where the vowel is placed.

Lesson 4

The double Vowel - Marks

 The double vowel-marks signs are an extension of the single

vowel-marks. The double vowel signs add the ‘-n’ sound to the

single vowel. Please see the letters below. The Daal has been

used to enable us to see the position of the double vowel sign

which is called tanween. Tanween refers to the double form of

any vowel, the specific name of the double vowel sign e.g.

double Fatha is also given below as this is unique for each vowel.

Tanween al-fatha
 In the following 3 lessons, we will learn the doubled forms of the three

vowel-marks, These differ in pronunciation from the normal vowel-marks in

that there is an added ‘n’ sound e.g. whilst the Fatha makes the ‘a’ sound,

the Tanween al fatha makes the ‘an’ sound.

 In this lesson we will cover Tanween al fatha which makes the ‘an’ sound.

Tanween al fatha is written as two Fatha’s above the letter and added ‫أ‬

(alif) after it. If the word is ending with ‫أى ة ء‬ any of these letters the ‫( أ‬alif)

will not be added.e.g. ً ‫ى ة ً ًء أ‬

 In this lesson we will cover Kasrah Tanween which represented by two

Kasra’s below the letter and it gives the sound “in”

 In this lesson we will cover the Dhamma tanween which makes

the ‘on’ sound. The Dhamma tanween is represented by a

Dhamma with a slight inward ‘tail’ and is written above the letter.

Long vowels
 In the following 3 lessons, we shall cover the long vowel-

marks. The long vowel-marks are basically a combination of

 a) the single vowel,

 b) a letter use to lengthen the sound of the vowel.

Madd bil Alif


Madd bil Alif is the long vowel lengthening the sound of
the Fatha from 'a' into 'aa'.

* ‫ ا‬+ ‫ ا‬will be written like ‫آ‬ (aa).

Sukoon
 In this lesson we will cover the diacritical mark (i.e.

a mark added to a letter to indicate a special

pronunciation) in the Arabic language called the

Sukoon. The Sukoon is in the shape of a circle

ْ and is written above the letter to show that

there is no vowel on the letter. Hence, we

emphasize the letter by stopping in our

pronunciation of it. This will require us to join

letters.

The Definite

Article
In English we have definite nouns which are usually preceded by 'the' (i.e. the
student, the tables) as well as indefinite nouns (i.e. a student, tables). Arabic also
has definite and indefinite nouns. The Arabic definite article joins with the word that
it precedes with ‫الـ‬.

Nouns preceded by the definite article are definite as well as the names of cities,
countries, regions, and people. Nouns without an article are usually indefinite.

How to pronounce the definite article depends on the letter that comes after it. In
the case of the word below, it is pronounced as it is written- 'al'.

When ‫ الـ‬is attached to words that begin with certain letters, the ‫ لـ‬will not be
pronounced at all. Instead the first letter of the word is either pronounced twice or
stressed. This is the case in the example below.

Notice the symbol that resembles a slanted w that is appears immediately after the
first letter. This is a called a shadda. Whenever two identical consonants appear
right next to each other, only one consonant is written, and the shadda is written
after it, indicating that it is doubled. Remember that short vowels that come within a
sentence are never written.

The letters that follow this pattern are known as sun letters (‫)الحروف الشمسية‬.
