Lesson 3 Activity 3: The Good Life

Compare and Contrast

Identify two modes of doing the same thing where one involves a more
technologically advanced method. Example would be snail mail vs. e-mail. List down
as many examples. Brainstorm with a partner if a less technologically sophisticated
mechanism can actually turn out to be better in terms of reaching for the good life. Is
the more technologically advanced always better?

1. Yahoo mail vs G-mail

2. AllTheInternet vs Google search
3. Facetime vs Skype
4. Messenger vs Telegram
5. Musical.ly vs Tiktok
6. Snow vs Snapchat
7. B612 vs SODA
8. Facebook vs Instagram
9. Google meet vs Hangouts
10. Powerdirector vs Kinemaster
11. Google chrome vs Microsoft edge
12. Internet explorer vs Opera search engine

If a less technologically sophisticated mechanism can actually turn out to be better in

terms of reaching for the good life.

For me, a less technologically sophisticated mechanism can also be a way of

achieving a good life, because it also has similarities with the more technologically
advanced ones and sometimes they're the basis for making the advanced ones even
better.

Is the more technologically advanced always better?

I think yes, because if something is advance, it means it's always ahead of

others. So for me, the more technologically advanced ones are really better because
we can make sure that they have a new feature that is better than the previous one.
And if the more technologically advanced is really good, many people will use it only
then you will be able to see and prove that what you've done is popular and useful.

Assessment
1. What is good life?
According to Aristotle a good life is human flourishing, a kind of contentment in
knowing that one is getting the best out of life. A kind of feeling that one has maxed
out his potentials in the world, that he has attained the crux of his humanity.
2. What is the relationship between the good life and science?
Well, good life is related to science. It is science that gives good life to all and, at
the same time, it is the quest for good life that stimulates science. In this vast world,
where the number of inventions is growing rapidly, science has made life more
convenient.

3. Does technology always lead us to the good life? How and why?
Yes, because technology leads to a good life, as it is responsible for
advancement in all sectors of the economy. It's because it gives us the means to
achieve something faster and easier. Modern technology has led to the development
of a number of devices, such as smartphones, computers, etc., which make it
convenient to complete our work. But there are times that they're not always good,
they can be either good or bad for us. We think that technological advances can be
dangerous to health, for example our phones transmit waves and we can become
sterile, or we can have cancer or brain tumors. Technical advances may be either
good or unhealthful.
