I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of volcanoes found in the Philippines
B. Performance Standards
C. Learning Competencies/ Code:
Specific Objectives 1. Differentiate weather and climate;
2. Identify and describe the various factors that affect climate; and
3. Explain its impact on different regions of the world.

II. CONTENT
A. Subtopic Factors Affecting Climate
B. Concepts Weather – the condition of the atmosphere at a given time
Climate – the average condition of a region over a long period of time
Factors Affecting Climate
 Distance from the Ocean. Places along coast are cooler and wetter
than inland areas.
 Latitude. The farther the place from the equator the cooler the
temperature. Climates in the regions where sun’s rays hit
indirectly are always cool or cold.
 Prevailing Winds. Warm air rises and cold air sinks. The
warmer winds that blow near the equator rise and move towards
the poles of the Earth. The colder wind from the poles sinks and
moves towards the equator.
Sea Breeze – occurs during the day, when the wind blows from
the water to land
Land Breeze – the wind that blows from land toward the water
at night
 Landforms. There are more rainfall in mountains than in low
lying areas. The higher the place above sea level the lower the
temperature.
 El Niño and La Niña. El Niño forms when warmer water
pushes energy and moisture in the atmosphere, causing changes
in global wind and rainfall patterns. This brings about severe
drought due to absence of rain. La Niña brings severe flood due
to heavy rains. This is due to the winds from the East which
becomes so strong cooling more of the Pacific.
 Human Intervention. As the population of humans increase
there is a need to cut down large number of trees for human
consumption.

IV. PROCEDURES /LEARNING TASKS

A. ELICIT (Engage) How are you today? Can you describe the temperature today?
B. ENGAGE

Let the students give their insights about the illustration.

C. EXPLORE
Let the students perform Activity 2 in their Worktext page 20.

D. EXPLAIN Guide Questions.

1. How do you differentiate a weather from climate?
2. How does human activities affects the climate?
3. Why is it that people living near a coastal area has cooler
and wetter climate than inland areas?
4. When do we experience La Nina and El Nino? Why is this
so?
5. If your location is near the equator, how does it affects the
type of climate you have?
E. Finding practical applications of Presentation of Output by Group
concepts and skills in daily living.
(Elaborate)
G. Evaluating learning. (Evaluate) True or False
1. Weather describes the day to day condition in a place.
Climate is what you expec to get.
2. Dry climates are very close to large bodies of water.
3. The farther the place in the equator, the cooler its climate.
4. Warm air sinks, while cool air rises.
5. During La Nina, people will experienced drought due to
lack of rain.
