13 Density
1. Lead is said to be denser than wood. What this means is that a certain volume of lead
is heavier than the same volume of Wood. Lead is denser than wood.
2. Density is mass per unit volume. The more mass there is per unit volume, the greater
the density.
3. Density(g/cm3) = Mass (g)/Volume(cm3)
4. The mass of any volume of a substance can be known is the density is known. This
helps engineers to find the mass of a structure and build strong enough foundations
for it.
5. The SI unit for density is Kg/m3. To convert g/cm3 to kg/m3, multiply by 103.
6. The mass of an object can be measured of a lever balance, a beam balance or a top
pan balance.
7. The volume of a
a. Regular shape: use the volume formulas.
b. Irregular object: Put the object in a measuring cylinder filled with water,
its volume is the amount of water it displaced.
c. Air: Find the mass of a round bottomed flask with air. Then remove the air
using a vacuum pump. Subtract the two values for finding the mass of air.
The volume can be found by filling the same round bottomed flask with
water, and then measuring it using a measuring cylinder.
