2. Introduction
M/s Unique Geo Test laboratory, NABL. Approved Laboratory & ISO 9001:2015 Certified
Company was entrusted by The chief pmg, Bhubaneswar for the work Geo-Technical
3. Purpose
The Object of the current geotechnical investigation was to explore and determine the existing
ground water table at Bore Holes etc. and to evaluate approximate range of safe bearing capacity
for the proposed structure using empirical formulas provided in the relevant IS codes. The goal
of our investigation was to identify the key geotechnical issues that could potentially impact the
proposed project and to develop geotechnical recommendations for design and construction of
the project.
4. Scope of Works
Scope of Work Included with the followings: -
4.2. Drilling of 02 No’s Bore Holes up to desired depths (Refer to Table No-02) as per IS 1892.
4.3. Collection of Undisturbed/Disturbed Samples & Conducting Standard Penetration Test as per
4.6. Laboratory testing of samples for various Engineering & Index Properties.
4.7. A comprehensive Geotechnical investigation report embodying all the above Information
along with tables of Field / Lab tests results and bearing capacity computations.
6. Field Investigation
6.1. General
In an attempt for optimization in the design of foundation for these proposed structures to be
constructed at this site, Geotechnical Investigation was envisaged. The entire Investigation
I) Field works unfold the sub-surface deposit types, their characteristics & Behaviour of
II) Laboratory test’s part would help determining the relevant physical and Geotechnical
structures and the bearing capacity with particular reference to the sub-surface types and
system, boring is affected by the cutting action of a rotating bit which was kept in firm contact
with the bottom of the Bore hole. The bit is carried at the end of hollow, jointed drill rods which
are rotated by a spindle Rod connected to Gear Box. A Bentonite fluid is pumped continuously
down the hole through the hollow drilling rods and the fluid returns to the surface in the annular
space between the rods and the side of the hole, and so the protective casing may not be
generally necessary. But when the inner Surface of the Bore Holes are susceptible to collapse, the
In the Rocky Strata, the core Barrel with Diamond bit is used in place of Drill Bit at the down end
of the Drilling/Connecting rod & the boring is continued in same manner as above. The Core
Samples of Rock are cut and Collected in the Core Barrel which is recovered after Removal of
Standard Penetration Test was performed in the Bore Hole. The Standard Split Spoon Sampler
attached to the string of drilling rod down End lowered to bottom of the Drilling Depth of Bore
Hole & allowed to rest under its self-weight. The Drill rods were connected to driving assembly
which consisted of a hoisting equipment’s, a drive weight (Hammer) of 63.5 kg, and a guide to
ensure 75 cm free fall of hammer on an anvil connected to upper end of drill rods. The No. of
hammer Blows that were required to penetrate the sampler through three runs of 150mm each
were recorded. Nos of Blows for initial driving of 150mm was disregarded & the no of blows
required to drive the sampler through the remaining 300mm is called Blow Count or Penetration
number, N. If the penetration was less than 30cm for 50 blows, it is considered as refusal & N
value is noted as 50. At the end of the test, the sampler was withdrawn & the soil extracted from
this un-corrected N value cannot be used for calculation of Bearing Capacity. So we have to
correct these values as described in IS 2131. There are two types of Corrections for SPT N value
effective overburden Pressure in Cohesion-less Soil. To equivalent all these SPT N values,
overburden correction is made based on its effective overburden pressure at test depths as per
IS 2131:1981 Reaffirmed 2021 Figure-01. The Correction is made only in Cohesion less Soil
strata.
Fine sand & Silts are present in submerge condition below the test depths because the
field test N value affected by the pore water pressure in above said conditions resulting
in higher N value. To neutralize this effect, we do this correction. Prior to apply this
correction make sure that N1>15, Otherwise N2=N1&N2 be final corrected Value to use
in calculations.
Standard Penetration Test is conducted & Samples are collected from spoon sampler at
every change in strata or 1.5m intervals, whichever is earlier. Other Forms of samples
are UDS,DS, Wash and Rock Core & Rock Non-Coring. In Clayey Strata Undisturbed
Sample (UDS) is taken to know to the in-situ Density & Shear test Parameters of the Soil,
DS- Disturbed sample is collected at just below ground level & Where the SPT rebounds
Ground Water Table Determination of ground water table was measured using steel tape
and weight as per procedure laid in IS 6935:1973. At the time of Sub-soil investigation,
the encountered Water table depth is shown in Table-3 under clause no. 6.7 & in Bore-
7. Lab Investigation/Testing
The sent Samples from Field are preliminarily inspected and then received at lab for
further investigation & Testing. Lab Testing Results are attached in Annexure-II.

Summary of Field & Lab Properties.
i) Shear failure.
Bearing capacity that can resist this type of failure. BIS recommends a value of FOS= 2.5
to obtain the net safe bearing capacity Qdn. by using the physical characteristics of the
foundation and relevant Test parameters of soil as per IS 6403: 1981Reaffirmed 2021.
Intensity Qds is obtained by using the physical Characteristics of the foundation, SPT N
Value with fig. 09 of IS 8009 (Part-I):1977 Reaffirmed in 2017 and the relevant
Compressibility characteristics of the Underlying soil. The value so obtained ensures that
the foundation shall not settle more than that which is permissible as per BIS
Recommendations. The permissible settlement depends upon the type of superstructure
and the nature of supporting strata. Table-01 of IS 1904: 2021 may be followed for this.
The lesser of these computed values i.e. Qdn or Qds is adopted as the allowable Bearing
Abstract of the Safe Bearing Capacity for Shallow Foundation is given in Table-01 &
Abstract of SBC for Shear and Settlement criteria is given in Table No-01 and the designer is at
liberty to decide the depth and the type of foundation intended basing on the sub-soil
NOTES:
The following conclusions, suggestions and remarks are made based on the available test data
The selection of type of foundation is therefore governed primarily by the magnitude of the
maximum and permanent loading conditions, type of structure and allowable settlements.
The foundations typically must satisfy two independent design criteria. Firstly, there must be an
acceptable factor of safety against bearing capacity failure of the soil under the maximum
design load. Secondly, the total settlement of the foundation due to initial distortion and
consolidation of the soils under sustained loading during the lifetime of the structure should fall
within the limits that are structurally tolerable. (Refer IS 6403:1981-Clause-6.1 & 6.1.1 and IS:
1904:1986Table-1).
The safe bearing capacity of the sub-soil stratum has been calculated and has given in this report
(Table-01).
