Have you ever heard the phrase, Your reputation precedes you? It simply means that you are well known by others, regardless of whether or not you know them. Here in Ocala, the reputation of Druid Hills United Methodist Church, precedes me all the time. As I go out into the community, a verbal description of our location rarely helps to make a connection with others. To say to them we are located on the corner of 17th Avenue and Lake Weir Road, is often met with a deer in the headlights expression. To take it a step further and mention that there are four corners at the intersection, CVS is on one corner, Walgreens on another, New Horizons Rehab on the third, and we are the forth, is often met with, I can see Walgreens and CVS, but I do not remember a church. At that point, I go with the tried and true description, We are the Pumpkin Patch church. That is always met with, Oh, I know exactly where you are! Their eyes light up, their voice gets higher, and I usually get a story about one of their many adventures in our patch. I have often joked that we should rename our congregation, Pumpkin Patch United Methodist Church. After all, that is how we are known to this community. And you know what? That is absolutely okay. There is nothing wrong with being the Pumpkin Patch church. I have many colleagues desperately trying to find a niche in order to make the type of connection with their community that we enjoy here. We've developed a history because of our longevity with hosting the pumpkin patch. We have a connection with others by being a part of their family memories. More importantly though, we do this well. We have tremendous coordinators, outstanding storytellers, and incredibly hospitable volunteers. (Not to mention a really great deal with Forest High School Air Force ROTC to help us unload the trucks!) The phones in the office have been extremely busy lately with various groups calling and making their field trip reservations for the Pumpkin Patch. It seems they are calling a bit earlier every year in order to make sure they get the time slot they want. There is quite the demand for the experience that is the Druid Hills United Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch. So to help make this year a success, I humbly ask you to do two things. One is pray for the patch. Pray for this patch to help families connect with each other. Pray that people experience our love this year through the patch and that it will make a long lasting impact in their lives. Pray that we can be authentic examples of Jesus Christ to all that we encounter and that God will reach at least one person because of our patch. Pray that people come out to support our patch. However you see fit, however you are lead, please pray for our patch and the opportunities we will have because of it.

Prayer serves as the backbone of the church. It is what supports all our efforts of ministry. In that spirit, you are invited to hold these persons in your prayers and thoughts. Second is volunteer. Ask those that have volunteered before and I am sure they will tell you what a great time they had. So sign up for a slot, or two, or three, and come and seize the opportunity to engage with this community and love on them a bit. You will be glad you did! October is our time! It is our time to love this community. It is our time to show the people of Marion County that we understand what radical hospitality is all about. It is our time to show them what loving our neighbor truly looks like. It is...our time. Have a great month!
PUMPKINS!
News from Roy
PUMPKINS! PUMPKINS!
The pumpkins are coming!!!! We expect our first delivery on Wednesday, October 12 at 4 PM and we need everyone who is able to help unload. Remember some lifting is required. HOWEVER, we have lots of jobs for those unable to lift, so come and have fun and enjoy some refreshments. We also need sellers and story tellers, sign-up at the Connection station. This is the churchs fundraiser and lets all be part of it. The second load will arrive October 18th at 4 PM. There will be a Pumpkin Patch workday on Thursday, October 6th at 9 AM.
News from Lucy The pumpkins are coming! The pumpkins are coming! And so are the kids! And we need story tellers! The pumpkins will arrive on October 12, and the stories will start on October 17. Every year we host preschoolers and kindergarteners from all over Marion County. They come between 9:30 and 11:30 am. We read stories to them and they play in the patch. This is one of the most rewarding events at the Pumpkin Patch. A lot of these kids have never been to a patch, theyve never sat on a hay bale and a lot of them have never seen a Little Red Wagon. We provide the books and you provide the voice. If this is a ministry you would enjoy, please contact Terri Silvola-Finch at 369-0614.

Often folks ask me about how to lower their cholesterol. I came across this interesting study & thought Id pass it on. Nutrition researcher Linda Van Horn, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, says the study shows that eating more of these simple, inexpensive ingredients such as oatmeal, barley & beans, peas & lentils can have a significant impact on lowering blood cholesterol & risk for a heart attack - - one forkful at a time. By consuming these types of foods, some people whose cholesterol is borderline high might be able to avoid taking medications, and those with high cholesterol might be able to lower the amount of medication they need to take, says Gina Lundberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association and a preventive cardiologist in Atlanta. Research shows that only about 15% of your cholesterol level can be influenced by diet; 85% is genetic, she says. Where your LDL should be: US guidelines for LDL cholesterol levels: Less than 100 mg/dL, optimal 100 to 129 mg/dL, near or above optimal 130 to 159, borderline high 160 to 189, high 190 or above, very high

New Bible Study Yes, Lord, I Have Sinned, But I Have Several Excellent Excuses!
Sin is a problem for each and every one of us. A problem that constantly separates us from God and God's blessings. But it is also a problem that God is eager to help us resolve. Starting Thursday, October 6th we will begin a new Bible study entitled, Yes, Lord, I Have Sinned But I Have Several Excellent Excuses by the Rev. James Moore. I invite you to join me for this seven week study as we look at such topics as humanity's arrogance, overreaction, and halfheartedness, and how God can save us from these traits. I am sure you will be challenged, uplifted, educated, and a bit entertained, as we look at sin and how God's grace can free us from its bondage. Thursdays: 10am and 7pm in Fellowship Hall
7 sessions: October 6 , 13 , 20 , 27th, and November 3rd, 10th, 17th Cost: Free ($12 if you want the book not required)
