DC Generator

An electro-mechanical energy conversion device (or electrical machine) that converts

mechanical energy or power ( T) into DC electrical energy or power (EI) is called DC
generator.

Working Principle
The basic principle of a DC generator is electro-magnetic induction i.e., “When a conductor cuts across
the magnetic field, an emf is induced in it.
OR

“Whenever, magnetic flux linked with a conductor changes, there is an induced emf in that conductor”

Principle

Faradays Law of Electromagnetic Induction

“ Whenever magnetic flux linked with a conductor

changes, an emf is induced in the conductor”

Yoke
• The outer frame of a dc machine
is called as yoke. It is made up of
cast iron or steel. It not only
provides mechanical strength to
the whole assembly but also
carries the magnetic flux
produced by the field winding.
So It should have good Magnetic
properties such as high
permeability and low reluctance
etc.

Field System
Magnetic Pole
Pole core and Pole shoe

Function:
Pole Core: to house field winding

Pole Shoe: to spread uniform Magnetic flux

in the air gap

Field System...
• Magnetic Pole

Pole winding (field Winding)

Attached to the yoke by fasteners as
shown
Direction of current entering the pole
winding will decide whether the
pole is North or South.
All pole windings are connected in
series and supplied with DC supply
and there will be alternate North
and South pole.
Collectively these pole windings is
known as field winding ( F- FF)

Armature System

Armature core:

Solid and Laminated

Laminated: laminated sheet Stampings

Functions: to house armature winding

6/5/2021
Armature System….

• Armature Winding
winding is done in all slots of the
armature on the basis of some
pattern known as Lap and Wave
winding. ( A-AA)
Function: when rotated in air gap
of dc generator it induces emf in
it.

Commutator
The induced emf in the armature
The number of
coils is ac in nature, to convert this commutator
ac emf in to dc and to tap it out for segments is equal
external use an arrangement is used to number of
armature coils
which is commonly known as
commutator.

Commutaor is attached
permanently to the
shaft

Carbon Brushes
Carbon brushes being
electrically conducting
and is used to tap the
rotating emf available on
commutator segments
to the external use.

Across Armature (A1– A2 )

Field Winding (F1 – F2 ) needs

DC Supply to induce magnetic
Poles inside the yoke. This is
known as Excitation of Field
winding.
