Vallaki
The largest village in Barovia seems almost normal
compared to the rest of the valley. Behind the stockade
walls, villagers go about their business. Indeed, the walls
serve as a literal and figurative barrier between the gothic-
horror-filled realm and the lingering hope that all is well.
Villagers whisper of strange and twisted creatures that
roam the night beyond the walls. Other than a few brave
hunters, few venture beyond the walls.
Vallaki is chock full of intrigue, rumors, spies, and the
machinations of medieval politics. Nefarious characters
tread the shadows, all looking to gain an advantage, a
favor, or perhaps information for powerful locals or Strahd
himself. The ruthless burgomaster runs the town, aided by
his henchman Izek. The burgomaster holds regular
festivals to boost the morale of the people, but they do
little to improve the dark atmosphere pressing upon the
town.
Lady Wachter, a powerful woman of noble lineage, vies
for power and plots to overthrow the burgomaster. She has
been using her secret cult in subversive ways, hoping to
finally take control of the town.
This guide provides new locations for adventures to visit
in Vallaki, giving them additional places to find supplies,
rest, and clues about Barovia and Strahd. Some locations
provide side quests that introduce other new locations and
drive the plot of the Legends of Barovia campaign. Many of
the NPCs in this guide are self-serving but neither good
nor evil; they are merely trying to carve out some small
corner of happiness in gloomy Barovia.
The following are new shops and locations of interest
that expand the options in Vallaki’s town square:

† Avicenna’s Augury (potions and alchemy)

† The Cart and Wheel (wainwright and carpenter)
† The Hab and Dash (tailor)
† Skran’s Leather and Hides (leatherworker)
† Walpole and Son (bookstore)
† Wayland’s Hammer (blacksmith and armory)

These other locations have been expanded upon to add

life to the streets of Vallaki:

† Blackwater Tavern (tavern and bakery)

† Blinky’s toy shop (toy shop)
† Ernst’s home (private residence)
† Haunted house (haunted location)
† Lila’s Herbal Remedies (herbalist and midwife)
† Milivoj’s home (private residence)
† Trapped Paw (hunting supplies)
† Von Holtz Manor (private residence)

This guide also introduces a new situation for the party to

deal with: “Special Event: Curse of the Love Doll.” Izek has
learned a Vistani curse and plans on charming Ireena into
loving him.

Approaching Vallaki
The old road meanders through the forest valley, flanked by dark,
brooding mountains to the north and south. The woods thin out,
giving way to a small mountain town surrounded by a large
stockade wall. A thick fog presses against the walls, obscuring the
details of the town, and giving it an eerie and oppressive look. At
the end of the road stands a pair of sturdy iron gates, guarded by
two shadowy figures. Half a dozen pikes have been planted in the
ground outside the gates, each one with a wolf’s head impaled on
it.

Strangers have brought harm to

the village in the past, so the
burgomaster has enacted strict
laws to keep the town safe. The
guards insist that all weapons,
except for daggers and similarly
sized weapons, be left with them;
they promise to keep them safe
until the visitors leave. Anyone
who wishes to have their weapons
while in the village must receive
permission from the burgomaster.
The local wolf hunters, Izek, and
the guards are the exception and have this special
permission.

Town Square
A sense of foreboding and fear permeates the air, casting a shadow
over the otherwise bustling village. Several streets lead off the
town square, many lined with additional shops. Locals huddle
around the well, the primary source of safe drinking water you’ve
seen, and it seems a place of plentiful gossip. The stocks to the
north remind, however, suggest that not all is well.

The town square serves as the center of community life

and commerce. It is the largest public open space in the
village and is used for a variety of purposes. Most days it
serves as a marketplace for farmers and artisans to sell
their goods, but it the burgomaster also uses it for political
and legal purposes. He holds court here and often makes it
the site of public punishments. At least one villager is
locked in the stocks at all times, and Izek doles out the
occasional lashing to warn others. Less often, it’s the site
of a public execution, and there has not been in quite some
time.
In addition to its practical uses, the town square is a
social hub where people exchange news and gossip.
Hildigard Vollump acquires her gossip here.

It is also the location of the regular festivals held by the

burgomaster. The next festival, the Festival of the Blazing
Sun, takes place three days after the characters first arrive
in Vallaki.

The Cart and Wheel
Wainwright and Carpenter

The inside of the Cart and Wheel is dimly lit, with the smell of wood
and leather wafting through the air. On one side of the room, a
workbench contains an assortment of saws, chisels, hammers, and
other woodworking tools. Along the walls, there is an array of
wood of various sizes and types, ready to be shaped and fashioned
into whatever a customer desires. The walls of the shop are lined
with shelves holding nails and other hardware. Various pieces of
finished wagons and carts in varying stages of completion lie about
the shop.

Konik is well versed in the use of woodworking tools,

knack for horses and can read their behavior, allowing him
to find the perfect horse for his customers.
Konik has made wagons and other vehicles for the

dark carriage under the commission of Rahadin. Konik is
not a spy, but if Rahadin asks about the party, he will share
information out of fear.
Characters may see Konik sneaking away at night, when
he visits with the Vistani.

The main streets of Vallaki connect to the town square. The streets
are narrow and lined with private residences, many of which are on

Ernst Larnak’s Home
Private Residence

Ernst’s home is modestly furnished, with a small wooden table and

chairs in the dining area, and a cozy fireplace in the corner. The
kitchen is equipped with basic tools and utensils and has a small
pantry. Despite its simplicity, the home is well maintained and
clean, reflecting Ernst’s meticulous and organized nature.

Ernst Larnak (LE male

human spy) is a
mysterious figure in the
village of Vallaki. With
his well-groomed
appearance, it is easy to
underestimate him, but
he has a sinister aura
about him that can’t be
ignored. He is a spy,
always lurking in the
shadows, following and
eavesdropping on those
around him. Despite his seedy profession, he is always
impeccably dressed and well mannered, but with a hint of
slyness in his eyes. He serves the powerful Lady Wachter
and spends much of his time in the local taverns, the
Blackwater Tavern and the Blue Water Inn, gathering
information and keeping a watchful eye on the villagers.
Despite his reputation, Ernst is a master of disguise and
can blend in with the crowd, making him a formidable
opponent for anyone who crosses him.

Lady Wachter’s Wish

The bedroom upstairs is small and functional, with a
simple bed, a chest of drawers, and a few shelves for
Ernst’s personal belongings. If the characters search
Ernst’s bedroom and succeed on a DC 12 Intelligence
(Investigation) check, they find a note, a copy of Devil We
Know, a sealed letter, and a bag with 100 gp.
The note is to Ernst from Lady Wachter. If the characters
cannot be convinced to join her cause or are seen as an
enemy, Ernst is to deliver the letter and gold to the Vistani
in the camp outside of Vallaki.
The letter to the Vistani is sealed, and Ernst does not
know what it says, but it is implied it is a request to
assassinate the characters once they leave Vallaki.

Haunted House
Abandoned House

The haunted house of Herod is a creepy and abandoned building

in the center of Vallaki. People seem to avoid it. The yard is full of
weeds, and crawling vines creep up the sides. The wind creates an
eerie howl as it blows through several of broken windows. You
have an uncomfortable feeling something still haunts the
premises.

Herod’s History
Otus Herod (N male human) was Vallaki’s historian. He
kept detailed recorded history of Vallaki, until the
burgomaster found that history unpalatable. He demanded
Herod revise the history to show the burgomaster in a
more favorable light. Herod refused, stating history is just
history, not a discipline that portrays right or wrong, good
or evil; it is just a record of events. The burgomaster grew
angry and had Herod imprisoned, and Herod died soon
after.
Herod’s home was emptied by order of the burgomaster,
and all the history books of Vallaki were burned. The house
has been locked, and no one has dared enter it, under the
order of the burgomaster.
That was over a decade ago, and it is now believed that
Herod’s ghost haunts the house, seeking revenge on the
burgomaster and the books on the true history of Vallaki.
Characters who enter the house will sense it is haunted,
and those with a passive Perception of 15 or higher notice
unnatural disturbances.
If a character
calls out the name
Herod, he will
reveal himself.
Herod is a ghost
and will defend
himself if attacked.
He will not start a
violent conflict,
and if his hit points
fall below 10, he
will disappear to
protect himself.
He will tell the
characters the story
of his fate and
promise the characters a great reward if they carry out
revenge in Herod’s name. Herod wishes for the
burgomaster to restore his name and tell the truth about
Vallaki’s history; Walpole has a single copy of Herod’s
History of Vallaki hidden. If the burgomaster refuses, then
he asks the characters to imprison the burgomaster or
dispose of him by any means necessary. If the characters
accomplish this task, Herod the ghost will gift the party a
ring of protection. If the characters previously mentioned
they are friends of Walpole, he will also tell them the
location of the Tome of Strahd.

As you enter the shop, the scent of dried herbs and essential oils

Milivoj’s Home
Private Residence

The walls of the home are made of rough stone, and the floor is
made of wood planks. A small wooden table and two stools sit
near the hearth. A pair of comfortable cots sit against the north
wall near the warm fire. Along the west wall are dried food goods,
and along the east wall is a larger dining table.

The home belongs to

Milivoj (N male human

and has a chip on his

serves as an altar boy

Milivoj and Yeska often play cards at the table if they are
not working at the church. If they scrounge enough coin
together, they will have dinner at the Blackwater Tavern or
buy a pie and bring it home to enjoy.
Yeska told Milivoj about
the bones of St. Andral.
Milivoj promptly stole the

The Trapped Paw
Hunting Supplies

The Trapped Paw is a simple wooden building with a slanted roof

and a large wooden sign in the shape of a paw hanging above the
door.
Upon entering, the strong scent of leather, oils, and the great
outdoors greets you. Racks of bows, arrows, and crossbows are
mounted on the walls, while large furs and pelts of various game
animals are draped over wooden crates and barrels. Ropes, snares,
traps, and other hunting gear are carefully arranged on shelves
and display tables.
The shop is run by two rugged and experienced hunters, who are
behind the counter sharpening their weapons and repairing gear.
The walls are adorned with their various hunting trophies and the
pelts of wolves. A small fireplace provides warmth and a place to
dry gear on rainy days.

The Trapped Paw is owned by Szoldar Szoldarovich and

Yevgeni Krushkinm (N male human scouts). Their private
quarters are upstairs.
Szoldar and Yevgeni are often found in the Blackwater
Tavern across the street, but will venture to the Blue Water
Inn if they hear adventurers are in town looking for some
hunters or guides. They sell the wolf pelts to Skran, and
wolf meat is sold to the local butcher, who then sells it to
the Blue Water Inn or Blackwater Tavern for stews and
wolf steaks.
If the characters inquire about werewolves, the hunters
mention seeing one near the haunted tower west of town
(Van Richten’s tower). If they wish to know more about
werewolves, they should speak with Darovich the old wolf
hunter in Krezk, who lost his leg to a werewolf.

him of his time as a young prince centuries ago. If given

Special Event: Curse of
the Love Doll
Izek has learned of a
love curse from the
Vistani, the Curse of the
Betrothed. It requires a
potion, a doll, and an
incantation, and if
performed successfully,
the victim becomes
charmed by the caster
and will unerringly
serve by their side. To
complete this curse, he
has had Blinsky to make
increasingly lifelike dolls of Ireena and pestered Anya at
Avicenna’s Augury to make a philter of love—both of which
are key ingredients in the curse’s ritual. See “Izek’s Special
Doll” and “Izek’s Threat” for more information.
Izek is obsessed with Ireena, and until he has these final
two parts of the ritual, his whole demeanor changes when
in her presence. He will attempt to hide his hideous arm
and becomes unable to take his eyes off her. He is overly
polite, and is like a puppy dog around her.
Once Izek acquires the philter of love, however, he will set
out to give the potion to Ireena and gift her the doll and
nervously recite a poem:

If rape, poison, dagger and fire,

Have still not embroidered their pleasant designs
On the banal canvas of our pitiful destinies,
It is that our soul, alas! is not bold enough!

If this ritual succeeds, Ireena will fall under the curse

and not leave Izek’s side. Casting remove curse ends this
effect if the spellcaster succeeds on a DC 20 check using
their spellcasting ability modifier (see the “Campaign
Guide” for remove curse rules). Other ways to end the curse
including having a Vistani use the Curse of the Departed on
the original doll, and giving the doll back to the Ireena, or
seeking Madam Eva’s help. Perhaps even Vasili could use
this as an opportunity to help the party and win their trust.
