Introduction
•An international non-governmental organization
(INGO) is an organization which is independent of
government involvement and extends the concept of
a non-governmental organization (NGO) to an
international scope. The term NGO originated from
United Nations .
• Examples of NGO mandates are environmental
preservation, human rights promotions or the
advancement of women

•A non-government organisation (NGO) is a
social service organisation working towards a
better society.
• It preserves to bring a positive change by
uniting people together.
• Their main mission is generally societal or
environmental in nature.
• NGO is a broad term, which includes charity,
organizations, advisory committees and various
other professional organizations.

Role of NGOs in protection of environment in India
The NGO’s constitute a worldwide net-work interacting with
Governments and Internal intergovernmental organization in
shaping international environmental policies:
1. Creating awareness among the public on current
environmental issues and solutions.
2. Facilitating the participation of various categories of
stakeholders in the discussion on environmental issues.
3. Protecting the natural resources and entrusting the equitable
use of resources.
4. Being involved in the protection of human rights to have a
clean environment.
5. Analysis and monitory of environmental quality.
6. Organizing seminars, lectures and group
discussion for promotion of environmental
awareness.
7. Helping the villages administrative officials
projects on environmental protection.
8. Transferring information through newsletters,
brochures, articles, audio-visuals etc.
9. Data generation on natural resources, time line
history of villages.

Environmental foundations of Africa (WFA)
• EFA was founded in United Kingdom in 1992.
•The Environmental Foundation for Sierra Leone
(ENFOSAL) started implemented on 1993.
• They shifted to libera during the time of war and
started a foundation named Environmental
Foundations of Africa (EFA).
• This EFA – Sierra Leone(EFASL) is operating as a local
partner to international NGO EFA
Important works and strategies of EFA
1. It protects the environment of west African region and restoring
the degraded lands and forests by making them greener.
2. Providing environmental education and raising awareness on
environmental issues.
3. Promoting the sustainable livelihoods.
4. Providing technical assistance and advice in environmental issues.
5. Preventing degradation of environment and undertake projects to
conserve flora and fauna.
6. Consolidating its operations in Gambia, Libera and Sierra Leone
while advocating region in addressing environmental problems in
West Africa.
Conclusion
NGOs have a vital role to playing in creating
environmental awareness at all levels. India has a
large network of NGOs , which involved in spreading
awareness to the people. The government has
implemented such policies to enhance the
environmental protection.
