    TOPIC: EXPERIMENTAL CHEMISTRY

    CONTEXT;
    Chemistry is a practical subject; it requires a special room called a laboratory for
    carrying out experiments. While in the Laboratory, utmost caution is taken to ensure
    safety of both property and everyone inside.
    The picture below shows some students in a Chemistry laboratory. Study it carefully
    and answer the questions that follow.

    Task:
    (a) With reference to the above image, identify the likely risks that may result from
    students’ behaviour in the laboratory.
    Eating/tasting/drinking in the laboratory may lead to food
    poisoning/consuming dangerous chemicals that can harm the body.
    Heating substance with the open end of the test tube facing yourself, the
    liquid may spurt out and cause injuries or burns or scald.
    Running in the laboratory, knocking a table with glassware
    Long hair not tied up; hair catches fire.
    Chemical spills in the eyes.

    Playing around during experiment may result into acid burns
    Six points or more earns 9 scores
    (b) What rules and regulations should be enforced to ensure safety in the laboratory.
    Never perform unauthorized experiments or work in a laboratory alone.

    Before obtaining any chemicals carefully read the label on the reagent bottles

    Securely replace lids caps and stoppers after removing reagent from containers

    Never place anything that is not directly required for the experiment on the laboratory
    desks.

    Never pour water into concentrated acid but instead pour acid slowly int water.

    Never direct the open end of test tube towards yourself or anyone else.

    Never play around during experiments.

    Never return unused chemicals to their original container (unless directed by the
    instructor)

    Never eat, drink, or smell chemicals in the laboratory. Rather carefully waft the fumes
    towards your nose.

    Never look directly into the test or flask. Look at the content from the sides.

    Mouth suctions is never used to fill a pipette

    Use the fume hoods when toxic or irritating vapours are involved.

    Clean up any spill immediately after use.

    Always secure the tops of reagent bottle immediately after use

    Always wipe spatulas clean before use and after inserting into reagent bottles

    Always wear an epron or protective clothing when working with chemicals

    Report any accidents and or injury, however minor, to your instructor immediately

    9 points or more earns a maximum of 9 points.

    Student earns 1 score for excellence when explains the rules clearly.
