Task:
(a) With reference to the above image, identify the likely risks that may result from
students’ behaviour in the laboratory.
Eating/tasting/drinking in the laboratory may lead to food
poisoning/consuming dangerous chemicals that can harm the body.
Heating substance with the open end of the test tube facing yourself, the
liquid may spurt out and cause injuries or burns or scald.
Running in the laboratory, knocking a table with glassware
Long hair not tied up; hair catches fire.
Chemical spills in the eyes.

(b) What rules and regulations should be enforced to ensure safety in the laboratory.
Never perform unauthorized experiments or work in a laboratory alone.
Before obtaining any chemicals carefully read the label on the reagent bottles
Securely replace lids caps and stoppers after removing reagent from containers
Never place anything that is not directly required for the experiment on the laboratory
desks.
Never pour water into concentrated acid but instead pour acid slowly int water.
Never direct the open end of test tube towards yourself or anyone else.
Never return unused chemicals to their original container (unless directed by the
instructor)
Never eat, drink, or smell chemicals in the laboratory. Rather carefully waft the fumes
towards your nose.
Never look directly into the test or flask. Look at the content from the sides.
Use the fume hoods when toxic or irritating vapours are involved.
Always wipe spatulas clean before use and after inserting into reagent bottles

Report any accidents and or injury, however minor, to your instructor immediately
