MOTOR CONTROL COMPONENTS

1.) Magnetic Contactor - A magnetic contactor is an electromechanical switch used in

applications that require a circuit “on and off” process, such as starting motors,
heaters, and lighting applications. Through the switch contacts, the magnetic contactor
takes care of transferring energy from one place to another.

2.) Auxilliary or Special Purpose Contacts - An auxiliary contact (or switch) is an

additional contact that forms a part of a circuit to increase the amount of electricity that
can flow through the system. These are usually installed when there is already some
primary source, but too much power needs to pass through for just one auxiliary
contact to handle.
3.) Overload Relay - An overload relay, also referred to as a relay switch, is a device
that opens the circuit in the event of an electrical, thermal or power overload. When
mounted with a contactor they create a motor starter. Overload relays are normally
closed, meaning they only open if they experience an overload.

4.) 3 Phase Miniature Circuit Breaker - A basic 3 phase MCB is three single MCB's,
formed together and linked to ensure isolation of all live conductors occurs and the
maximum size that is available is 125A but usually 80A is the maximum rating
commonly used.
5.) Indicator Lights/Pilot Lamps - An electric lamp, used in association with a control,
which by means of position or color indicates the functioning of the control; an indicator
light or a control light.

6.) Control Relay - A Control Relay is also known as a Relay, is a switch, an

electromagnetic switch. A control relay allows electrical current to flow through a
conducting coil that opens or closes a switch. It also protects the circuit current.
7.) Timers - Timers are similar in construction to control relays in the sense that they
have a low-voltage armature and coil that opens or closes a set of contacts when
energized.

8.) Pushbutton Switch - A push button switch is a mechanical device used to control an
electrical circuit in which the operator manually presses a button to actuate an internal
switching mechanism. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and configurations,
depending on the design requirements.
9.) Selector Switch - Selector switches can be rotated right, left, or in the center in
order to open or close the electrical contacts. The function of a selector switch is to
control devices as well as switch between a minimum of two or more circuits. The
perfect use for a selector switch is when used for controlling an output of a device.

10.) Drum Switch - Drum switches are field convertible from maintained to momentary
operation for flexibility. The reversing drum switches find application wherever manual
reversing control is desired. They are particularly suited for use on machine tools,
woodworking machines, and similar types of equipment.
11.) Foot Switch - Foot switches are a rugged electrical switch that is operated by foot
pressure to change contacts within an electrical circuit. Often used on large machinery
where hand operated switches are a safety concern.

12.) Limit Switch - A Limit Switch is a detection switch which consists of a basic switch
in a metal or resin case. The strong outer case protects the inside of the switch from
external forces, moisture, oil, dust and dirt so that it can be used in locations that
demand mechanical strength and environmental resistance.
13.) Joystick - Joystick switches or joysticks are manually actuated control devices for
installation in control and front panels as well as in portable control equipment. They
are used wherever motion sequences analogous to the actuation direction are
controlled by hand. When the joystick is moved up or down, the motor rotates in the
same direction — either forward or in reverse. Additionally, the further away from the
center the joystick is pushed (in either direction), the faster the motor speed will be in
that same direction.

14.) Buzzer - The main function of this is to convert the signal from audio to sound.
Generally, it is powered through DC voltage and used in timers, alarm devices,
printers, alarms, computers, etc.
15.) Enclosure - The main function of an enclosure is to provide protection not only to
the working personnel but also to the motor itself against the harmful ingress of dirt,
abrasive dust, vapors and liquids and solid foreign bodies such as a spanner or screw
driver etc.
