“SOTANO BEAT”

(A group of friends from secondary school decide to skip out literature class. We can see
them laughing, running, calling each other and organizing a secret adventure to the school
basement. It’s important we can see each friend’s personality)

Scene 1: THE PLAN

(Liv, Billy, Vilma, Ash and Julie hiding, they run across the audience and reach stage)

Alex: Guys, over here!! Hurry up!! (They hide)

Ash: Everything is clear!

Liv: We are good!

Billy: I’m not…I want to go back

Julie: Oh, come on Billy, look at Alex! He's always so brave and wonderful and.. (ashamed)

Ash: (cough, cough)

Billy: I say I can’t

Julie: Billy, there’s nothing to worry about!

Ash: Yeah! Billy, let’s do some relaxation exercises together (starts vocalizing brr,brr, mah,
mah, all together)

Alex: Billy ASHHHHHHHHH!! Miss Cooper is next door

Billy and Ash: (gesturing, makes clear he will remain silent)

Julie: (excited) So, who’s ready for some mambo at the school basement?

Alex: We will finally discover the famous place

Julie: I’m so excited!!! The adventure of my life!!! (with mobile phone) Let’s immortalize this
moment with a pic

Vilma: How are you always that happy Julie?

Julie: I eat chocolate everyday, honey

Liv: Makes sense

Vilma: I have recently read a science study that demonstrates that people who consume
chocolate or dance every day since childhood produce higher levels of endorphins and will
probably live longer.

Billy: That won’t happen to me.

Julie: Oh Vil, come on, that’s just a sad thing to say.

Ash: (singing) We are young!!!

Alex: So you like taking risks, don’t you?

Julie: Exactly, (dramatically) life is a dance floor, and we have to be ready to dance, we are

Julie: (exaggerating) I know, don’t you think I could be an excellent actress?

special effects, laughing)

(they enter to the basement, they must react a lot, the kids are surprised, they are secretly
being followed by Looney)

Alex: Woooooooow, This is the school basement?

Julie: OMG!!!! This should go viral!!! Excuse me, I need to film a tiktok draft (grabs and films
with her cellphone)

Ash: “Ok, but first let me take a selfie” (playing selfie)

Liv: This place has a special energy

Vilma: Uhhh, I don't know, smells like

Ash: Ahhh, teen spirit (singing metal)

Vilma: You wish, it’s disgusting

Billy: It is…

Liv: Hey, I think I brought incense, this will help

Vilma: Why do you have that?

(As Julie touches the curtain there is an electric current, transition music, a strange light
shift)

Scene 3: “Grease Gate” + Basement

Alex: What did you do?

Billy: Where are we?
LIV: Shhh!!! Look!!

(The kids are led to a magic dimension, the first gate/portal, to GREASE WORLD)

(dancers enters and the kids have a good time dancing the song with the 1980’s dancers)

Song 01: GREASE YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT

(exit dancers. A strange light shift. The kids make strange body movements, as if they were
hit by lightning. The vortex send them back to 2023)

BLACK OUT. PROPS IN

Ash: What was that?

Alex: We are in the basement again? What have just happened?

Liv: Where have the dancers gone?

Vilma: Is everyone ok? (She counts everybody) 1,2,3,4,5 great!

Julie: OMG I’m dreaming!!! That was amazing!!!

Ash: Singing “I got chills, they’re multiplying!!!”

Julie: (Singing to Billy) “Ooh-ooh-ooh, honey”

Billy: (he joins Julie’s singing at first, but then he starts to freak out as he realizes he can
only talk saying you are the one that I want. He must repeat the same phrase but with
different emotions: happy, confused, trying to understand what is happening and with
despair): “You are the one that I want, you are the one that I want, you are the one that I
want, you are the one that I want,you are the one that I want

(While kids discuss. lights shifts and Looney appears. She freezes the play and presents
herself to audience)

Looney: (laughing, delighted) Howdieeee!!! What’s going down lovely audience? Are you
having a good time? I can’t hear you!!! Wonderful!!! I’m so glad to see you!!!
Oh… I know what you are thinking, I’m impossible to forget, you can also remember me from
Rock of Ages, Hamlet, etc, etc. I won’t continue my loves because time is money and I’m
getting older. So, I know it’s been a while since we haven’t seen each other on stage, I’m just
as surprised as you are. I mean, it’s not Shakespeare’s era where theater was the real diva,

now kids easily replace you with all tiktoks, memes, astrology, and kpop bands…. I’m sorry,
It’s so hard living as a theater character in the 21st century trapped in a theater script (cries),
Wait! Where was I director? (the director shouts in off “TIME”) Oh right, time, the fact is that I’
ve been here waiting for these kids for such a long time, so when they finally went down to
the basement I had to dust myself off and, to my surprise, I discovered that I haven’t lost my
superpowers, look at this: “PLAY, STOP, PLAY, STOP,PLAY, STOP” (The kids move and
freeze x3 according to the narrator’s rules) Ahhh I love it!! So…. lovely audience as you can
see this basement is a very particular one, Will the kids be able to get out, or won’t they?
ha-ha, let’s see, we have a lot of surprises!!! Jazz hands (She exits singing), You are the one
that I want!!!! (shouts) PLAY!!!!

( magic music track)

Ash: This is so weird, what time is it? I’ve lost track of time

Liv: Guys, I’ve never been that connected I’ve felt presences

Alex: I felt freezed for a moment

Vilma: You are crazy!!!!!

Julie: (to Billy) What are you doing Billy?

Billy: (gesturing, screaming) YOU ARE THE ONE

Alex: That I want (pointing Julie)

Julie: Do you really think that? (To the girls) Girls, did you listen? (To audience) I think it’s my
moment

Vilma: It’s time for you to have a real conversation

Ash: Ask him out!

Vilma: It seems that he’s having trouble communicating with us, ( Julie and Alex explore the
basement while Billy continues whispering “You are the one”)

Julie: Guys look! The shoe!

Liv: It’s so familiar to me

Julie: I think it’s my size, I’ll take it

Billy: You are the one that I want

Vilma: Forget about it, everything is so messy here

Julie: Oh-oh, too late for that (strange lightning, echoing)

Liv: What?

Ash: Again ? No way!

Billy: you’ re the oneeeee

(Julie touches the shoe and opens the second gate, mystery light shift and weird music
track)

Scene 4: SCHOOL OF ROCK

(The basement kids arrive at School of Rock Universe, they whisper, they watch Students
practicing the end of DO-RE-MI song. The magic narrator secretly follows them. Miss S
interrupts)

(The basement kids observe, they can try to participate but they can’t be seen by the
characters)

MISS S: (clapping)

PAUL: Miss S!!!

SOPHIE: What are you doing here?

MISS S: I heard your practicel! You are very talented! Why didn’t you tell me? It doesn’t
matter. Listen, I’ve decided we are starting a new project. It’s called “Rock Band”

KIM: Is it a school project?

MISS S: Of course it is!

SOPHIE: Is it a competition?

EMMA: Are other schools involved?

PAUL: Is there any prize?

MISS S: yep,yep and yep a huge bright golden star in your record. Hello Stanford, Yale! We
should start next semester according to the rules

KIM: Let’s begin right now!

All: Yes, please, Miss S let’s do it

MISS S: OK! But you can’t tell anyone

SOPHIE: Miss S, what are you thinking of?

MISS S: Ehhh youuu, who are you? What are you doing here? Don’t worry, just do what you
know. (Hands her a mic)

(Ash sings you’re beautiful in order to motivate Student )

MR Clark waiting, he’s sitting alone, nervous

Miss Cooper: (enters) Oh, hi, hi, Im late, I'm lost, I'm new

Mister Clark: Miss Cooper you are 20 minutes late

Miss Cooper: I'm new, I'm new

Mister Clark: Did you hear rumors?

Miss Cooper: About what? I don’t know anything, I’m new.

Mister Clark: About the kids!!! it’s like they have been eaten by the earth, they vanished

Miss Cooper: They disappeared??

Mister Clark: What am I saying?!

(Principal Enters)

(Looney enters and throws a book to stage)

Vilma: (To Billy) What is it Billy?

Alex: Not again

Vilma: Wait! I think he’s trying to tell us something…

Liv: Billy, we are all ears

Ash: I have an idea! (she hands Billy pen and paper) Write something

(he tries not to do it, but he can’t help it, he’s reach out by a strange force, he writes you are

Alex: We are lost

Vilma: It’s like he’s been taken the ability to communicate

Billy: (agreeing) “You are the one”

Liv: Oh universe!!!

Vilma: This is so unfair, Communication is power, I’ll solve it

(While they discuss Looney enters and throws a book to stage. Alex, Julie, Ash start reading
out loud without being noticed by his friends)

Alex: “Two households, Montegueas and Capulets, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona,
where we lay our scene,

Julie: From ancient anger borns new violence, Two unfortunate children of these enemy
families become lovers and take their lives.

Ash: Welcome to the story of Romeo and Juliet” Guys look it’s the book we are reading at
literature class

(Lights shift. Weird Music. Gate 3: Romeo and Juliet)

SCENE 7: ROMEO AND JULIET

(During black out in off)

VOICE 1: A fight!
VOICE 2: Come and see!
VOICE 3: Capulet and Montague!
VOICE 4: Over here!
VOICE 5: Come and see!

(The kids arrive at Verona where Mercutio and Tybalt are about to fight)

(People begin to gather around. Tybalt and Mercutio arguing. Everyone closes in on them
forming a semicircle around them. The basement kids watch)

Tybalt: This is not with you Mercutio, stay out of this

Mercutio: This is not with you, this is not with you, what’s the matter? Are you a coward?
Romeo: Mercutio, please, don’t
Tybalt: Ok, you ask for it

Song: “We will rock you”

(Mercutio and Tybalt fight. Kids watch. The magic narrator follows them. While music plays
the kids discuss)

Alex: What the heck is this?

Julie: It looks like a dance

Vilma: They are Tybalt and Mercutio!!!

Liv: It looks like they are fighting!

Alex: Is this a fight? Nobody fights like this

Vilma: This is the beginning of the tragedy!

Liv: Romeo and Juliet!!!

Ash: Is it a dance or is it a fight?

Alex: Where’s the tragedy here?

Billy: (frightened) You are the one that I want, You are the one that I want

Alex: This is boring…Can we skip this to the death part?

LOONEY: Stop! (kids freezed) (to Billy) You shut up for a minute (clapping) you want to see
a real tragedy? PLAY!!! (narrator exits)

(Music goes faster, like a remix, fast camera, Mercutio dies. Billy tries to speak but he’s been
silent)

Alex: She’s dead!

(Dancers exit) (The actors of Romeo and Juliet enter and act the scene of death. We must
see how they prepare and finish the scene. Romeo and Juliet wait for the director to start the
scene)

VOICE OFF: ACTION!!!

ROMEO:
Oh love, how could you?
Eyes, look your last!
Arms, take your last embrace! and, lips, Oh you
The doors of breath, seal with a kiss
A dateless bargain to engrossing death!
Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide! Here’s to my love!
(he drinks the poison and dies)

JULIET: (awakes) O comfortable friar! Where is my lord?

I do remember well where I should be,
And there (here) I am. Where is my Romeo?

Julie: (emotional) Dead!!!

JULIET: (horrified. She sees Romeo) What’s here? A cup,in my true love’s hand? Poison, I
see, has been his timeless end. (hearing a noise) A noise? then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger!

(Snatching ROMEO’s dagger) This is thy sheath; (Stabs herself) let me die. (Falls on
ROMEO’s body, and dies)

(All kids crying)

Vilma: I think she’ve listened to you

Liv: (Crying) This is so sad
Alex and Julie: It is
Julie: I don’t like tragedy
Billy: (tries to speak but he can’t)

LOONEY: (To audience) You wanted tragedy, I gave you tragedy. You should never
underestimate Shakespeare! Now, let’s raise this funeral, let’s go to modern theater! (To
director) Music Maestro!!!

(lightining. Freak music. She leads the group directly to Spamalot gate. Spamalot actors
and dancers appear on stage as they were performing a video clip)
