CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

More than 200 million trees are cut down daily to make paper, which means that a

tree is cut down every 2.5 seconds (Kilgore, 2023). As people become more conscious of

the environmental impact of waste, recycling has emerged as a key strategy to reduce our

carbon footprint and mitigate climate change. King County Solid Waste Division (2023)

writes that recycling and waste prevention are crucial. Paper recycling, in particular, is the

subject of a large amount of attention, given its potential to reduce deforestation and

protect natural resources (Yardley, 2019). Despite the advantages of effectively recycling

paper waste, there is still a huge information gap to apply this movement.

According to Business Waste (n.d.), any industry that uses paper in any form

therefore produces waste. Paper waste management is key to efficiency, while having a

recycling strategy in place ensures a positive environmental impact, rather than just

throwing it in with general waste. Schools heavily rely on a paper documentation for

educational purposes. Paper being biodegradable provides key advantages for recycling

and environmental sustainability. It naturally breaks down over time, reducing landfill

waste and minimizing environmental impact. Recycling biodegradable paper also requires

less energy compared to manufacturing paper from virgin materials, thereby reducing the

energy-intensive processes involved in pulp production, paper manufacturing and

contribution to climate change. (EPA, 2021).

An action plan by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)

stated that there is growing awareness and interest in environmental sustainability, which

may lead to an increase in paper recycling initiatives in the future. However, there are still

significant challenges in the Philippines due to a lack of infrastructure and knowledge. A

study by Gallardo et al. (2019) found that many students in the Philippines were unaware

of the environmental benefits of recycling and lacked knowledge about proper paper

disposal practices. The research also showed that students' participation in sustainable

waste management methods was hampered by a lack of recycling facilities and

incentives. Despite that fact, it is not impossible to promote recycling as students in

Cavite successfully did a recycling project as reported by Philippine Daily Inquirer

(Bautista, 2021).

According to Philippine News Agency in 2018, there has been an increase in the

number of schools in the Philippines implementing paper recycling programs, which is a

positive step towards environmental sustainability. Given the important role of students in

promoting sustainable waste management practices, it is essential to understand the

factors that influence their recycling behaviour and awareness. This research aims to

explore the level of awareness and engagement in paper recycling practices among Grade

11 HUMSS learners in SHS in San Nicholas III, Bacoor City, and identify the factors that

influence their recycling behaviour. (Gonzales, 2018)

As stated in an article by Philippine Daily Inquirer, lack of recycling knowledge

and a lack of recycling bins were recognized as a significant barrier to recycling.

However, the survey found that students are eager to learn more about recycling and were

eager to engage in recycling programs if given the chance. (Aurelio, 2019). Through

examining the challenges and opportunities for promoting paper recycling among the

students, this study will provide valuable insights for students, teachers, education

programs, environmentalists, and stakeholders in seeking to promote an effective

sustainable waste management of paper in the Philippines.

Input would consist of the learner's gender and section, along with an investigation

into their experiences in paper recycling activities or programs. We also examined

whether the students have awareness on the environmental impacts of paper production

and paper wastes. The process we will conduct is through a qualitative analysis or

interview as a way to gain insight into students' understanding of paper recycling, as

differences in experiences and opinions may influence the study. The output will become

the understanding on how the Grade 11 HUMSS learners are aware and knowledgeable

on the benefits of recycling paper in SHS in San Nicholas III Bacoor City.
