CHAPTER 1
Introduction
More than 200 million trees are cut down daily to make paper, which means that a
tree is cut down every 2.5 seconds (Kilgore, 2023). As people become more conscious of
the environmental impact of waste, recycling has emerged as a key strategy to reduce our
carbon footprint and mitigate climate change. King County Solid Waste Division (2023)
writes that recycling and waste prevention are crucial. Paper recycling, in particular, is the
subject of a large amount of attention, given its potential to reduce deforestation and
protect natural resources (Yardley, 2019). Despite the advantages of effectively recycling
paper waste, there is still a huge information gap to apply this movement.
According to Business Waste (n.d.), any industry that uses paper in any form
therefore produces waste. Paper waste management is key to efficiency, while having a
recycling strategy in place ensures a positive environmental impact, rather than just
throwing it in with general waste. Schools heavily rely on a paper documentation for
educational purposes. Paper being biodegradable provides key advantages for recycling
and environmental sustainability. It naturally breaks down over time, reducing landfill
waste and minimizing environmental impact. Recycling biodegradable paper also requires
less energy compared to manufacturing paper from virgin materials, thereby reducing the

may lead to an increase in paper recycling initiatives in the future. However, there are still
study by Gallardo et al. (2019) found that many students in the Philippines were unaware
of the environmental benefits of recycling and lacked knowledge about proper paper

According to Philippine News Agency in 2018, there has been an increase in the
positive step towards environmental sustainability. Given the important role of students in
factors that influence their recycling behaviour and awareness. This research aims to
explore the level of awareness and engagement in paper recycling practices among Grade
11 HUMSS learners in SHS in San Nicholas III, Bacoor City, and identify the factors that
However, the survey found that students are eager to learn more about recycling and were
eager to engage in recycling programs if given the chance. (Aurelio, 2019). Through
examining the challenges and opportunities for promoting paper recycling among the

Education. This study can inform an education program on how to teach students to
recycle paper and make better use of waste paper. By providing new knowledge and
skills, students can learn to recycle for their own benefit and help improve their
environmental impact. Incorporating these concepts into the education program can

The limitation of this research is that it only covers the Grade 11 HUMSS strand
of SHS in San Nicholas 3 Bacoor City. The personal information taken from the learners
only pertains to their section and sex. The study aims to obtain qualitative data that

Impact. This word is used in our study to define how waste contributes to climate change
and carbon footprint due to how huge our wastes are not properly disposed and recycled.
Incentives. The motivation of students that they have enough materials to practice
recycling of paper.
Key Strategy. The science of planning actions on how we can reduce the negative impact
of our wastes.
Movement. In this research, it implies the actions of the majority to participate in the acts

Pollution. One of the causes of pollution is the cutting of trees and the emissions from
factories.
Potential. In our study, it signifies the possibility or chance if people act to contribute to
environmental-friendly practices.
Preferences. The reason why students make decisions on how to handle their paper
making and operations of a business, organization, or project. In this study, the project is
