PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter present the introduction, theoretical and conceptual framework,

statement of the problem, hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and limitation,

definition of terms, and review related literature.

Introduction

Handicrafts are those objects, which require skill with hands, or in other words,

they are man-made. Basically, a product solely made by human hands without using any kind

of complicated machinery or equipment is called handicraft. A simple dictionary meaning of

handicraft is "activity involving the making of decorative domestic or other objects by hand".

According to Cambridge Dictionary, "handicraft is askilled activity in which something is

made in a traditional way with the hands rather than being produced by machines in a factory,

or an object made by such an activity.

Plastic bags has become a growing problem in Mahayahay because of its

persistence and impacts on the environment. The people in Mahayahay need to reduce

consumption and minimize their plastic waste using the Handicraft Bags.

Handicrafts bags are eco-friendly, as the effectiveness of using the product do

not cause damage to the environment. It is popularizing handwoven bags and baskets made of
indigenous materials, like bamboo, rattan or vines. Thus, the study was conducted to

determine the effectiveness of Handicrafts bag Production in the community to lessen the

pollution in the society of using a plastic bags that is not easy to dissolve. And in our daily

living by using it as the replacement of the Plastic bags in buying groceries etc. thus it gives

betterment in the environment especially to those people who are making these products for

this is the way of making money, not only bragging it but to minimize the use of plastic bags

and to save our environment.

The importance of determine It's effectiveness is to help the community to retain

the traditional value and to lessen the amount of plastics we use in everyday life.

Conceptual and Theoretical Framework

This study will anchored by the Handicrafts can help solve plastic woes.

Recycled plastics are being used to produce chairs and tables for schools, while eco-bricks

from hard plastics are used for building parks pavement and concrete plant boxes for added

clean-and-green effect.

According to Saraexim (2016) Reusable shopping bags are better than plastic or paper

bags. These bags are used to prevent environmental pollution. The handicraft products are

consumed not far from the production place. It has a direct influence on the environment by

reducing pollution from transportation to consumer areas. At the same time, local consumption
helps to maintain traditional knowledge and the development of local markets. Over the years,

however, as more and more plastic products are developed, and introduced, the once-thriving

handicrafts industry faded.

In the country's rural areas, the slogan is simply going back to the good old days when

plastics have not been invented yet or, at least, not as widely used and popular as they are

today. It is popularizing handwoven bags and baskets made of indigenous materials, like

bamboo, rattan or vines, and the use of banana leaves for food packaging the way our elders

used to.

Dying tradition industry, Filipinos are known for handicrafts, possessing unique skills

to produce indigenous products using their bare hands and simple tools; skills that have been

traditionally passed on from generation to generation. Over the years, however, as more and

more plastic products are developed, and introduced, the once-thriving handicrafts industry

faded. Today, some government agencies are, in their own little way, trying to revive the

trade.

Statement of the Problem

1. What are the purposes in mitigating the usage of plastic bags?

2. What are these products that can lessen the usage of plastic bags?

3. Is there a significance relationship between the usage of plastic bags and the

Handicrafts bags.?

4. Is there a significant relationship between product and customer?

Hypothesis

Ho1: The problem numbers 1&2 are the hypothesis that there is no significance relationship

but crucial in other relationships.

Ho2: While the problem numbers 3&4 hypothesized follows there is no relationship between

the usage of plastic bags and the handicrafts bags.

Significance of the Study

We conduct this study to determine that handicraft bags had significance as

alternative bag to lessen the usage of plastics. Now a days we are in a time that full of

garbage that gives negative effect to our environment. We all know that this plastics is bad to

our environment but still we use it as a bag to put for something, after we use a plastic bag,

we toss it away and use another one and not minding about the what it may cause. So as we

use this alternative handicraft bags it gives a good effect for the sense that this lower the

amount of pollution.

The one purpose of having a handicraft bags is to sustain the needs of every

maker of it. It's their way to survive their hungry stomach in a day and in beside of that it also

make them benefits to provide their wants.

research.

Review of Related Literature

This part presented a review of related literature and studies which considered

being relevant to the study by researchers. The literature and studies were taken from

foreign and national articles, online published journals theses to gain a clearer

perspective of the topic under investigation.

Global Literature

Rattan is a type of climbing or trailing vine-like palm native to the tropical

jungles of Asia, Malaysia, and China. One of the largest sources has been the Philippines.

Palasan rattan can be identified by its tough, solid stems that vary from 1 to 2 inches in

diameter and its vines, which grow as long as 200 to 500 feet (Taylor 2022).

A rattan bag is a bag crafted from hand-woven straw or bamboo. In many cases,

it's made with a love that most other purses or satchels cannot match. Whoever the maker

may be, there's always a level of skill involved that shows many accessories unparalleled

(Long An 2019).

Cost-effectivity, reliability and durability of reusable bags had a significant impact in the

usage of plastic bags and paper bags. Reusable bags can be use for years and never have to

throw it out. Unlike plastic bags that are flimsy, reusable bags are durable that can carry out

a lot at a time. It also decreases the needs and usage of plastic and paper bags (Lober 2019).

Rattan bags are more common in women's wardrobes today. The popularity of

rattan bags has been viewed as the delicate nexus between fashion and environmental

conscience at a time when leading a green lifestyle is no longer unusual to most people.

Rattan can also be used to create bucket bags, crossbody bags, and backpacks in addition to

standard bags (chus.vn 2022)

Local Literature

Rattan is one of the most accessible natural ingredients in the world. This is

because the rattan trees grow easily grow at a fairly high speed. Rattan is also generally

minimal maintenance, both in terms of harvesting to transportation. How to harvest rattan

usually only rely on some simple harvesting tools and easy to move from one place to

another. This is to be number one from advantages of rattan basket.

That is, rattan is not only a natural material that is environmentally friendly, but

also does not leave a lot of negative impacts of harvesting and transportation. Compared to

plastic materials, rattan baskets are much more friendly to the environment around us.

In the Philippines, almost every household has one or more handcraft items in

their possession, such as baskets, brooms, feather duster sets, bamboo sofa sets, cupboards,

and other pieces of furniture. Native materials like beads, shells, seeds, and other items are

also used to make the clothing, jewelry, and accessories that young people today like

wearing. This shows unequivocally that Filipinos across the country support our handcraft

business (Arch 2019).

Global Studies
This study provides an overview and analysis of the global market for handicrafts and the key

trends that affect producers in developing countries, with the ultimate objective of offering

practical recommendations for the Haitian handicraft sector. This paper represents Volume I

of the Global Market Assessment for Handicrafts study and includes Chapters I and II.

Chapter I covers the global market for handicrafts and key industry trends and Chapter II

focuses on the end-market opportunities for Haitian products. The document is accompanied

by a video: Handmade in Haiti: The Perspective of Global Buyers, which presents an

overview of the U.S. market for handicrafts and buyer perspectives on Haitian handicraft

products.

A Vietnamese entrepreneur is promoting Vietnamese handicraft products by using traditional

material like sedge, rattan, bamboo and wood to make environmentally-friendly bags (Hein

2020)

Regarding the manufacture and export of handicrafts and similar alternative goods

throughout the world, China is one of the main competitors. According to USAID's Global

Market Assessment Report [7], China is capable of producing anything more effectively and

affordably than anyone else. In terms of price, quality, and production capacity, the Chinese

handicraft industry has reached an advanced level of competitiveness. In addition, buyers

who import directly from China to domestic markets can also make good profit margins,

against which only a very small number of importers from other nations can compete. Small

firms face challenges from mass-production retailers who import products directly;

additionally, their purchase orders demand rigorous delivery deadlines, large quantities,
specific packing and labeling, and advance payments. Similar obstacles confront wholesale

importers additionally, a number of orders for modest quantities allow for both prior payment

and payment upon delivery. Furthermore, consumers of all stripes like flexible, reliable

partners who offer a variety of product options. Small firms find it difficult to adhere to such

stringent rules.

Local Studies

The Philippines is the second largest world producer of handicrafts, mainly

baskets out of indigenous materials. This industry continues to provide a respectable

contribution to foreign exchange earning of the country (US$71.9M in 2000) while many

handicraft items are also sold on the local market. All together, the sector is providing

livelihood to more than 1 million Filipinos. Although the industry has experienced some

setbacks over the last ten years, it has kept the respect of the high-end markets in the United

States, European Union, and Japan and has only lost a great part of the low-end market to

China, our main competitor.

Despite this, Filipino craftsmen have indigenously overcome scarcity and

increasing prices of raw materials by constantly producing new designs for their products.

Over the years, Philippine handicrafts have evolved through innovative changes in designs

reinforced by exciting choices and combination of indigenous materials. There is, however

still ample room for improvement, particularly in remote upland communities with little

access to market information, brokering services, capital, and technologies for value addition.
Synthesis of the Review

The reviewed literature and the studies have been directed with the present study

to determine that handicraft bags cannot harm our environment and it is Eco-Friendly, and

this research we can learn to mitigate the usage of plastic bags in the Brgy. Mahayahay in a

way of using only rattan bags.
