INTRODUCTION

"One man's wast e can be anot her man's t reasure."

~English Proverb

Our world has a beautiful nature and environment. Where animals,

organisms, species and humans are living. We lived in this world with the help of
our environment, they support and give our life and basic needs. But when the
time past by, people destroy our home, our life, and the nature. People keep on
buying foods, products, drinks, and other materials that they need in their home,
and after using it they just throw and put all their trash everywhere and
anywhere. People keep on throwing trash, papers, bottles, plastics, and other
waste products in our surroundings not being aware that this trash we throw in
our surroundings has big effects on our society as well as in our environment.

Waste is the main problem of our environment as well us in our society but if
we think of that as a material people can create new things from it. Just like in
Recycling, people will collect waste, garbage, and materials to make these
things into new and usable one. It is usually the practices by the most people in
our society.

According to Waste Management (2009) stated that "Waste Management is

the collection, transport, processing or disposal of waste materials, usually ones
produce by human activity, in an effort to reduce their effect on human health
or local aesthetics or amenity". Waste Management is an activity where human
waste like garbage and unusable materials were collected by the garbage
collector in our Barangay's or District.

According to https://www.epa.gov/recycle/recycling-basics, recycling is a

used material from the human waste that has been reused as material for a new
purpose. Recycling is an activity where waste, garbage and other unusable
materials are being used into new materials.

What can you recycle? There are lots of waste, garbage, and other
unusable materials that you can recycle. Let us admit that there are lots of waste
products in our households that has been trap in our cellar, in there you can start
recycling these waste materials into new one. We also have bottles, papers,
packaging crafts and old clothes, these are the things that can mainly recycled.

Statement of the Problem

knowledge from the students regarding the proper garbage disposal.
Scope and Delimitation

The scope of the research is about the recycling and waste management
practices among the households in Talon 1, Las Piñas City. The total respondents
would be 10 residents in Talon 1, Las Piñas City. This study only consider the
effects of recycling and waste management among the households in Talon 1,
Las Piñas City. The researchers only emphasize the opinion and perspective of
some residence in terms of recycling and waste management practices.

Review of Related Literature

One early work by Kirunda (2009), revealed that the solid waste disposal and
management is both an urban and rural problem that every person could be a
generator of waste and also a factor to this problem. There is a growing
consensus that the immediate stakeholders in the issue of solid waste.

In this case the people or the community needs to join with the authorities in
dealing with this problem to avoid the environmental distraction and the effects
in human health. However, the humans or the people in this world should not be
able to do their part as citizen of their community nor all the people living in this

world should know first the importance of recycling waste management into our
daily life.

Describe by Rebullida (2002), explained that three main concerns call for
nationwide attention on solid waste management and waste resource recovery.
On is the magnitude of problem of waste generation, collection and disposal.
The second pertains to the prospects of recovering resources form waste
discarded by its original or previous user. This view treats waste as a resource. By
using alternative technologies and system, recycling and reuse can be possible.
The third concern raises the imperative for lifestyle charges in values, attitudes
and critical behaviors.

In other words, every person on this nations should be aware on the thongs
happening on their community especially to the environment because they
didn't recognize that there are lots of waste, garbage, papers and bottles that
are now scattered in many places and cause of problems to the other people
just because of their improper may of disposal. So here, our government or the
authorities of our nations should have plans to prevent the problems of our
environment.

In the latest work by Guererro, L.A., et. al (2013), asserted that solid waste
management is a task to the authorities because of the reason that there are
greater number of waste, that has been a problem to the municipal, and give a
large amount of money for the decreasing of waste and the entire handling
system.

Thus, if the government will continue to advocate the prevention of waste

disposal by using recycling and waste management practices and informing,
explaining and influence the people in right and proper way of garbage disposal

in our barangay of respective district, we will attained our goal to sace the
environment.

According to Koolivant, Binavapoor, Zadeh, Faheri (2016), stated that

based on the results, tot al generation rate of waste in Caspian Industrial Park was
3890.4 kg/day. Metals, organic waste, and paper and card board constitute
88.99% of the total waste. Other components were responsible for only 19.1% of
total waste. The majority of waste came from metallic industries and food and
beverage industries. Total hazardous waste accounted for only 6.85% of the total
waste.

In relation to that, like in our country there are lots of metals, organic waste
paper and cardboard, other components and mostly from industrial company
are collected by the garbage collector every day, which shows the results
presented that there are so many different materials and garbage that has been
used by the people in every community.

In the article by Fagnani (2016), it discussed that if the government will

implement the waste management in education or an activity in every school,
they will find difficulties to conduct this practices and they will need a person to
handle this kind of institutions to discussed and implement the environmental
awareness and solution of waste management practices.

In Fagnani‟s article it simply stated that it will be a big help if the students
will implement the waste management in many places not only in school but
also in other.

According to Moh & Abd Manaf (2016), the way towards cleanliness, we
people have a task or responsibilities in properly managing waste, in regard to
public concern in a possible effect of separating waste for recycling are lacking.

In this article, it has been said that the people are responsible in properly
managing waste and concern on the possibilities an un separating waste. We
people are causing conflict in our environment like water pollution, land pollution
and air pollution. Improper disposal and irresponsible habit of throwing air
garbage was the main reason why we are experience all of this.

According to the study of Chertow (2009), it revealed that in first place, if

we do recycling in our daily life it will have a clear and positive effects what can
reduce and reuse on greenhouse gasses that is now mainly the problem of our
environment. Basically because of recycling we recapturing instead of disregard
the energy, water, and other material to be used as a product.

In this book, the good effects of using recycling practices in our household.
Are being discussed If each and every one of us will do this, we can resolve the
problems in our environment and we will avoid the sickness and effect on our
health and because of these practices in managing waste we will attained the
positive effect.

In the work of Marshall & Farahbakhsh (2013), explained that growing

society and development of community are noticed the solid waste
management in developing countries. This has not in great number of
application of acting were successful the path of industrialize countries.

this book is about the improper solid waste management in industrialization

the improper managing of waste in all aspects in economy will lessen the
number in using the buildings materials and making a solid products in solid
waste to be again. We must be resourceful in reusing or recycling our solid waste
to lessen or prevent disaster or environmental impact.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATHEMATICS (STEM)

According to the book by Botkin & Keller (2007), the important idea in
managing waste is known as integrated waste management alternative that
contains reuse, source reduction, recycling ,compositing, landfill an incineration.
A major player in the reduction of the urban waste stream is recycling.

In this book they were trying to say that our trash will be utilized in the way
of recycling and it will have a better way to use it. In the process of managing
waste is setting the management alt ernative that contains reuse, source
reduction, recycling, compositing, landfill and incineration. A major player in the
reduction of the urban waste stream is recycling. This book is trying to say that our
trash will utilized in the way of recycling and it will have a better way to use it. In
the process of managing waste is setting the management alternative in a
process of reusing, recycling, compositing, source reduction, landfill and
incineration. A process of recycling is the best way to do in which it is the most
considered in managing our waste.

Based from Recycling Waste (2010), with the increasing human population
the needs of the people also increases. But the point of concern is that are there
enough natural resources to service all your needs. What if these resources finish,
this is one thing we need to ponder upon. We need to start recycling waste to
converse our natural resources. Recycling is simply the process of reusing the
items from which utility can still be derived. It is important to recycle waste so that
you can at least converse some of our natural resources for our generations to
come.

In this article it said that the needs of people are increasing because of the
increasing of human population. We have to recycle our waste to lessen the
overusing of our natural resources and to converse our natural resources

because recycling ,most of our natural resources will preserve for the past
generations.

In connection with this, the researcher are interested on knowing the

feelings of the people towards recycling and waste management practices in
their household since recycling and waste management is a difficult work for us
a normal person. Recycling and waste management is in part of our practices in
our everyday lives which are really helpful to our environment as well as in our
society. Grasping the perceptions of the people in Talon 1, Las Piñas City will be
truly beneficial not to the researcher's study but also to the people lived in our
society.

Synthesis
The society is producing waste that makes us in risk. Many of waste are
improperly disposed in our surroundings that‟s because we are irresponsible in
managing our waste. In some ways, our government is doing a job of reducing
the waste and specially managing our waste by declaring projects that makes
our waste in place. People must do proper waste management and using
techniques like recycling to assure the safeness, clean and organized
environment. Increasing population is one of the many causes of waste pollution
to the use of the increasing population of people releases trash and the trash
also growing. In order to lessen the waste in our community, we should obey and
maintain the proper recycling and waste management practices to prevent its
negative cause. Through the use of recycling, many of our waste are being
lessen and the proper waste management will provide a healthy living and
prevent calamities that may cause of improper waste management. In doing
this kind of practices, we must have a cooperation to do such things as recycling
and waste management especially in our home.Recycling and waste

management has a lot of good benefits to us especially in our surroundings or

environment so we must empower this kind of activity to sustain the organized
places. It is important to recycle our waste so that we can at least converse
some of our natural resources for our generations to come. Be responsible in
managing our waste to ensure that not only to have a clean and organized
environment but to ensure the waste that we produce will be vanishing or be
utilized again.

Definition of Terms

The following terms were operationally defined:

Clean environment- it is the result in the process of recycling and waste

management.

Garbage collector- it is person or a group of people who collect the garbage in

our community.

Human activity- viewed as burning of fossil fuels that can affect in our planet or
environment.

Lack of awareness- it is the state of being where people in our community is

insensible on the happenings in their surroundings.

Local aesthetics- appreciation of beauty from perception of local residents.

Recycling practices- the practice of reusing items that would otherwise

discarded as waste, this is an activity where people collecting waste materials
recycle it into new material purposes.

Resource recovery- it is the process of to be normal and can be used to increase

its wealth and provide something else.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contained the research design, respondent of the study,

sample technique, research instrument, data collection technique, data
gathering procedures and the profile of co-researchers.

Research Design

The researchers used the qualitative type of research. This type of research
according to Shuttleworth (2008), stated that a case study is an in depth study of
a specific situation rather than a comprehensive statistical survey. It is a method
used to slim down a very broad field of research into one easily researchable
topic. The type of qualitative research that the researchers chose is the case
study. Case study research explains the reasons behind the nature of existence.
That is viable to the research since it is referring to the Recycling and Waste
Management Practices among household of the Talon 1 residents.

Respondent of the Study

There are 10 respondents among the residents of Talon 1, Las Piñas City. The
reason to this is to deeply gather more data that makes the study more in-depth.
The researchers choose the respondent that have prior knowledge about the
research topic and that was inclined to the criteria.

Sampling Technique

The sampling technique that researchers will utilized is the purposive

sampling. According to Crossman (2016), was stated that the purposive sampling
is a sampling technique that you choose people whom you are sure could
correspond to the objectives of your study like selecting those with rich

12
LAS PIŇAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL - GOLDEN ACRES CAMPUS

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATHEMATICS (STEM)

experience in your study. The criteria that the researchers made are the
following: (1) The resident must age of 35 and above (2) The resident should have
idea about Waste Management and Recycling (3) must have experience in
recycling waste.

Research Instrument

In providing and gathering data, as much informative and evaluative

descriptive method had used. These methods included the use of interview
schedule as the tool used by the researchers. Interview schedule is usually used in
conducting structured interview as an interviewer's guide.

Data Collection Technique

The data collection technique that the researchers used is through interview.
Interview gives reliable and exact information given by the respondent to unable
the researchers provide false information. It can capture the respondents facial
expression, no doubt that the interview is a good way of collecting data. Also
prior to this, the researchers seek their approval to the co-researchers before
interviewing them. After the approval, the researchers conducted the interview
to gather data. Follow up questions were raised to have further explanation and
clarification to the statement of the co- researchers.

Data gathering Procedures

The data for this research were collected using interview questions. Their
quest ions were created suitably and individual questions form by the researchers.
It comprises 9 questions, which were related to participant awareness regarding
to the research topic. The researchers assured confidentiality of their participants
identities. Also, researchers understand participant consciousness in answering
questions, and so, they evaluate anonymity in every participant's identity.

Synthesis

Effects of Recycling and Waste Management Practices

Based on the question above, the most frequent reasons of the co-
researchers is that the environment will be clean and green.

Environmental Protection (2010), showed that it is our responsibility to

protect our own environment. Let us be responsible to protect our own
environment creating a quality of ecological environment and live with a
wonderful green nature living t ogether. In other words, if each and every one of
us will unite for the environmental protection we can create a delightful green
nature as well as clean nature.

One work by National Waste (2017), stated that aside from recycling
centers, there are sufficiently of businesses making the evolution to being "green."
Many waste disposal companies offer an inclusive range of services. This includes

19

recycling, roll off container fee, and covering facilities. Because of recycling and
waste management our nation will be clean and green and with the help of
environmental companies the task will be easy to do and besides that we create
a better living.

In the article by Advantages of Recycling (2010), asserted on the first place

when we recycle a piece, we start causal our part to save nature. Recycling
means no deforestation, less ingesting of water and fossil fuel. These are the most
used and the most significant mechanisms. If they would varnish or diminish the
life period can be short as well. Recycling helps to preserve the nature for the
impending generation. In addition to that, recycling has a great impact in terms
of waste materials and because of that our nature will preserve and will
improved the cleanliness as well as the green aesthetics of our nature.

Synthesis

Benefits of Recycling and Waste Management Practices

Based on the question above, the most frequent reasons of the co-
researchers are to make their home clean and organize.
Pullen (2009), stated that recycling is the one that can help the
environment. Of the entire step we obtain, if it is small, is one more of helping and
assisting the environment on which people live. Everyone is involved from helping
to producing a well environment for the next generation. To elaborate this, all the
people who live in this community has a great responsibility to protect and
conserve our nature because we live in this place and we can get all the things
we assured we can get so that in return we need to have practices to produce
a one and nice clean environment.

In the article by Waste Management (2008), stated that resourceful and

effective waste management is best achieved at household levels. If every
person gets involved, we can have a dominant effect on our environment in a
progressive way. In that, to achieve this positive effects we should involve or let
ourselves include to this programs yield by the government so that we achieved
the progress in our community.

In the article by Volunteers Initiative (2013), explained that to start best

exercise for waste management , educating on composting, recycling and
harmless disposal, while helping to mobilise the community to squeeze a „No

Litter‟ campaign to effect workable change. While you work with the public you
will conscious with them, hosted by a Nepali family. Here, you will be immersed
in the philosophy and community you are giving your time to help. In other
words, we need to have a knowledge about recycling and waste management
practices to get the best effect for our nature and get the well workable
change for the future.

Synthesis

Purpose of Recycling and Waste Management Practices

Based on the question above, the most frequent reasons of the co-
researchers is to help the environment and to make it clean.

According to Waste Management (2016), stated that to protect our nature

in our community it is also needed to consider issues in air, land and water. For
example, the social issues as well as waste management are types that affect
the balance of cities. In other words, we people in this world should protect our

environment for the decent of our municipal in order to maintain the good
effects of recycling and waste management practices. In other words, to protect
our environment we should know also the things surrounds us and because of
balancing our waste and proper segregating we be able to reach the goal of
having a recycling and waste management practices.

One work by Schenker (2014), explained that recycling waste is one that
makes you more responsible in the way that reusing and disposing of it. Evidence
from studies that the people do this impulsively cut down on buying unwanted
things in the market. They think how to dispose the packaging the product after
using before even buy it. Resulting the people need up saving a consider
amount of money and also save the planet. In that, reusing and disposing this
waste material we are able to come up with a good and better life because we
attained the value of our nature that will lead to us in a well fortune environment.

Recycling is one of the finest ways for you to have an affirmative impact on
the world in which we animate. Recycling is imperative to both the ordinary
atmosphere and us. We must act fast as the quantity of waste we create is
cumulative all the time. In other words, if we keep on using or implementing this
recycling and waste management practices we be able to get our goal which is
to have a clean and nice environment because recycling has a great impact
towards this issue so that the key to success is ourselves to be responsible and do
this practices inside or out of our household.
