Camping allows the learner to experience simple adventures appropriate for their age.
It lets them experience fun interaction among themselves, creates bonds among them,
and gives them an opportunity to know each other well while engaging in different
educational and interactive activities and games.
Camping helps the students be familiar with the world outside the school. In this regard
the assigned teachers and staff must ensure the safety of the campers, while helping
them think, strategize, explore, and enjoy.
BASIC CAMPING REQUIREMENTS

Here are some necessities that the students must bring when camping.
1. Food and Water

Any outdoor activity requires more energy than the usual daily activities. To be able to
enjoy and endure the increased need for energy, your body will need more water and
food.
2. Appropriate Clothing
The camper must determine how many days he / she will stay at the camp and pack
clothes accordingly. He /She must bring comfortable clothing for play, team activities,
and sleeping, including socks, undergarments, shoes, and slippers, towels, and
swimwear.
3. Toiletries
The camper must set aside a pouch for toiletries particularly toothbrush, toothpaste, and
comb. He / She must bring items in small packs or sachet to minimize space in the bag.
4. Shelter
Sleeping bags come in different sizes and types that suit the users. Sleeping outdoors
adds to the excitement of camping. The campers may sleep in tents, which the school
may provide or the students may bring.
5. Medical Kit/First Aid

The school usually brings a medical kit in case of any accident. However the camper
may also bring his / her own first-aid kit, consisting of medicines for headache,
stomachache, dizziness, upset stomach, fever, cough and colds, wounds, and bruises.
The first-aid kit must also contain bandages, antiseptic lotion, cotton, alcohol, and small
scissors, anti-itch or insect repellent lotion, sunscreen lotion.
6. Survival Kit
In addition the camper may bring a small flashlight, Swiss Army knife, lighter, and a
compass or map.

● Bring plenty of food and water.
● Be aware of the weather.
● Have First Aid equipment available.
● Keep your eye out for wildlife.
● Be fire safe around campfires.

Hiking, trekking, and mountaineering are often seen as synonyms of each other,
especially hiking and trekking. However, it is wrong to do so, as they are all different
activities with different purposes.
In all fairness, the cultural and geographical differences in the usage of the terms does
not make it easier to make a clear distinction between the words.
In general, the terms are used as follows:

● Hiking is the activity of long walks for the enjoyment of a natural setting.
● Trekking is the activity of walking long distances for pleasure in no particular
setting.
● Mountaineering is the sport or activity of climbing mountains.
Hiking is an outdoor activity of walking on beautiful, natural, charted paths

called hiking trails where signs are posted to guide hikers to their destination. These
signs help hikers avoid getting lost along the trails. Hiking is usually shorter that
trekking.

Trekking, on the other hand is long journey on foot usually along challenging,
uncharted paths for several days. It enables campers to explore remote and
undeveloped places without any means of transportation. Trekking provides a close-up
view of the hills and mountains, forests hidden falls, wildflowers, and huge trees. It
allows campers to enjoy and interact with nature. Trekking can be short or long
depending on the campers’ choice.
Mountaineering is the activity of climbing mountains in challenging circumstances with

the goal of overcoming all hazards on the route safely and ultimately reaching the
summit of a particular mountain. It demands more than just physical fitness. It requires
much more technical expertise, as it involves crossing crevasses, climbing glacial walls,
steep slopes, roped together, and so on. It presents a series of challenges, and the
main goal is conquering a summit of a certain mountain.
BECOMING A TREKKING GUIDE

A trekking expedition is journey through a mountainous region for at least two days. It
may take place plays in high peaks and passes or be through difficult obstacle and
plains. The journey may be self-supporting, with participants carrying their own
equipment and food, or it may conducted with the help of trekking guide for easier
navigation. Trekking can also be conducted in a city or school.
If you intend to be a trekking guide in the future, you must be able to do the
following:
1. Brief the participants on the technique required for participation and

introduce organizing and supervising groups.
2. Set up and maintain equipment. Ensure that they are in good working
condition and are safe to use.
3. Demonstrate the use of equipment.
4. Educate participants regarding safety measures and ensure that activities
are properly conductive.
5. Provide first-aid assistance and take appropriate further action and required.
What are the skills of an effective trekking guide?

Generally he/she must:
1. be a good communicator
She/he must be articulate and easy to understand. She/he must only not be able to
command attention and project his/her voice clearly but also able to interact with new
people every day and answer their questions.
2. be a master storyteller
Leading a trek involves more than selling the sights and sounds; it is also about sharing
the history of a place and the culture of its people. The trekking guide must know how to
tell a compelling and entertaining story of the area the participants are exploring to keep
the activity interesting. A sharp memory can greatly help him/her in these aspects.
3. be flexible
She/he should be able to adjust to spontaneous moments and use a unique approach
for different types of participants.
4. be considerate of cultural differences

Because having a culturally diverse group in a trek is possible, the trekking guide must
have the skill to tailor the activity his/her presentation of it or at least respect the
participants’ cultural identities and expectations. She/he must be able to cater to
participants with special needs.
5. know how to apply first aid

She/he must be prepared to administer first aid properly in unwanted scenarios such as
accidents and injuries. More importantly he/she must have presence of mind quickly
respond to emergency situations.
6. have a sense of humor

Some participants might have short attention span, so an effective trekking guide must
know how to inject some zest into his/her presentation and make the trek more
enjoyable.
Team building refers to the various activities that motivate and improve the
performance of individuals and the teams they are belong to. Team building strengthens
the bond between participants and pushes them to achieve their goals. It develops their
efficiency and effectiveness by improving their interaction and understanding of their
respective roles. However it must be undertaken regularly to produce long-term results.
Characteristics of a Good Facilitator
The building facilitation is a very challenging job because it involves managing and
uniting different types of people. It can be fruitful career for people with the right skills
set and personality for the job. A good facilitator can
1. speak confidently in front of large groups,

2. lead others,
3. guide a group through a learning process,
4. shape how people can agree to meet their goals, and
5. be objectives an neutral when facing criticism and resolving conflict.
