LEC 1 Principles of Design

Balance
distribution of equal visual weight.

Symmetrical Balance

it has equal visual weight on either side of the canvas. it is visually stable.

Asymmetrical

an art where both sides of the central axis are not identical, yet appear to leave the
same visual weight.

Radial Balance

it is a symmetrical balance wherein elements are distributed evenly around a certain


point.

Proportion
scaling of objects in relation to each other.
refers to the size relationships of one part to another, and of the parts to the whole.
ex. human, house
relative size and scale of the various elements in a design.
relationship between objects.

Pattern
Rhythm

visual art which is characterized by the repetition or alternation of elements.

Regular can be:

Regular - repetition of a single motif


Alternating - use of two different motifs alternately
Progressing - motifs may be presented in a gradual shift in characteristics like size (from
small to large)

Emphasis
accentuation of importance
focal point that rests on the subordinate space and draws attention to certain parts of
the composition.
it is about dominance and influence.
Unity or Harmony
harmonious arrangement of elements.
coherence of the elements of a work to the whole.
as in music, complementary layers and/or effects can be joined to produce a more
attractive whole. The composition is complex but everything appears to fit with
everything else. The whole is better than the sum of its parts.
