satellites, located over the equator, to
maximize the signal reception. Other factors,
such as satellite coverage area, elevation

signal quality (Figure 3-1). The StealthRay™ needs a clear line of
sight (LOS), or view, to the satellite for
uninterrupted communications. Objects
such as buildings, mountains, bridges,
tunnels and trees that block this view will
cause a loss of signal (Figure 3-3). The
signal will, however, be quickly restored
once the antenna has a clear LOS again.

Heavy rain, snow or ice may also interfere

affect the satellite signal.

StealthRay™. This may cause interference
with satellite reception. Once the vehicle
is in motion, any standing water on the
antenna should roll off and the interference
resolved. Clean the radome with a soft,

water repellents are also available to help
reduce rain and dew from building up on the

Parameters integration with your sales agent.

4.1 Antenna/ODU
The StealthRay™ antenna houses the
electronics within a weather-tight radome
(plastic housing). It is installed onto the
vehicle’s roof rack and connected with a
single coaxial cable to the antenna controller
and two coaxile cables to the modem inside
the vehicle.

4.2 Antenna Controller/IDU

The antenna controller supplies power and
commands to the StealthRay™ antenna. It is
collocated with the satellite modem inside the
vehicle.

4.3 Satellite/VSAT Modem

The satellite modem is a device that converts
the digital signal from a computer to a signal
that can be transmitted to the satellite. It also
processes the data coming from the satellite
into a format suitable for computers. This
allows computers to connect to the Internet
using the satellite antenna.

4.4 Wi-Fi Router (Optional)

The WiFi router allows for a wireless
connection to the satellite modem from
anywhere within the vehicle.

8 Installing the External BUC

Installing the
External BUC
This section will explain the proper
installation of an external BUC.

8.1 Placement of BUC

External BUCs can generate substantial heat
and should be installed in a location that
provides significant ventilation. The RAAS
provided TX cable that connects the antenna
to the external BUC is one meter in length to 8.2 BUCs Placed Within the Vehicle

8 Installing the External BUC

TOOLS & INSTALLATION

Do not fold or kink the 1 meter
TX cable. Any bends should be
gradual and kept to a minimum of a 5cm
bend radius to avoid damaging the cables
and degrading received satellite signals.

8.3 Vehicle Power Requirements

The antenna and antenna controller consume
about 55W. An external BUC of 40W
can consume up to an additional 500W
depending on the BUCs efficiency. Be sure
that the vehicle’s altenator can handle the
power consumption of the StealthRay™ and
any other equipment being integrated.

It is also important to install a DC to

AC inverter that can handle the power
requirements of this installation. It is
recommended to use an inverter that
provides double the watts needed to power
the system.
