Background
Airbus in-service experience indicates that the IDG (Integrated Drive Generator)
servicing procedure may not always be strictly followed. This situation can lead to
an incorrect oil level and subsequent electrical system malfunction, in particular
when the IDG is overfilled.
During servicing the oil is pumped through the IDG pressure fill port. It goes
through the IDG filter and exits the IDG into the external circuit, circulates into the
cooler, flows through the external circuit again and comes back into the IDG case.
When the oil level exceeds the top of the overflow stand pipe it flows outside the
IDG through the overflow drain port. The top of the overflow standpipe corresponds
to the top of the green band of the sight glass. The servicing procedure is designed
to fill all the cavities of the circuit with oil, expelling air pockets and thus setting the
optimum oil level which is at or near the top of the green band.

Description
The purpose of this article is to remind the key points to fully understand of how the
IDG oil system is filled during the servicing.

Operators have been reporting frequently high operating temperature of the IDG in
particular on A320FAM Neo Leap aircraft. If there is too much oil in the IDG, the
operating temperature increases since the oil become in contact with the high-speed
main rotor. Oil high temperature can be reached faster going above the ECAM
Advisory condition (IDG Oil Temp ≥ 147°C).

Recommendation
Airbus would like to highlight that AMM tasks referenced above should be strictly
followed to ensure a correct IDG oil level. This is a key factor in ensuring a correct
operational reliability of the aircraft reducing maintenance and cost burdens.

Main steps of IDG Servicing procedure which require particular attention:

 Connect the overflow drain hose and the pressure fill hoses (Fig 1).
 Do not attempt to pressure-fill the IDG with oil if the IDG overflow drain hose is not
connected to the IDG. This would result in overpressurization of the IDG case.

Fig 1

 When connecting the overflow drain hose to a recently operated IDG, a small
discharge of hot, pressurized oil may result.
 If possible, allow the IDG to cool before filling the IDG with oil (let the unit to be
serviced cool to less than 48°C).
 Service the IDG with oil until at least 0.9 liter (1 quart) of oil comes out from the
overflow drain hose.
 Remove the pressure fill hose only (Fig 2).
Fig 2

 Install the dust cap on the pressure fill valve.

 Do not remove the overflow drain hose from the overflow drain fitting of the IDG
until the oil flows from the hose has slowed to single drops (Fig3).
 Remove the overflow drain hose when the oil level has stabilized at or near the line
between the yellow and green bands (Fig 4).

Fig 3 Fig 4

 Install the dust cover securely on the overflow drain valve.

 When the servicing is complete the engine must be run at idle or dry-motored for at
least two minutes to allow the oil to circulate through the system and ensure that
every cavity of the oil system is properly filled with oil and the air is released.
o If the engine is run, let the oil in the IDG become stable for 5 minutes
(recommended procedure).
o If the engine dry-motoring is done, let the oil in the IDG become stable for
30 minutes (alternative procedure).
 Check IDG temperature at ECAM ELEC SD page.
 The oil level must be above the middle of the green band and below the
yellow band in cold conditions (Oil T°<48°C) (Fig5).
Fig 5

- The oil level must be above the middle of the green band or in the yellow band only if
the IDG is still hot (T°>48°C) from a recent engine run (Fig 6).

Fig 6
- If the oil level is inside the yellow band when the IDG is cool (T°<48°C),
service the IDG again connecting overflow drain and pressure fill hoses.
