I. INTRODUCTION

Agriculture is the primary sector of the economy. It is a

cornerstone of human existence because agriculture is the
provider of food. With the statement said, it is highly relevant that
when this primary sector of the economy is being disrupted, then
it will also be a big problem to the human existence.
What factor could greatly affect the agriculture? And so,
knowing what it is, could help us avoid and solve problems.
Climate is the factor of which the agriculture is highly
dependent. To increase crop yields in some places, climate
temperature must increase together with C02 or the carbon
dioxide. Changes of climate is a difficulty to the agriculture
because it affects how crops grow and how to raise animals and
fishes.
We've known that climate change has an effect not just to the
environment but also the human existence.
So, what are the reasons, problems, and solutions to climate
change?

II. PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM AND ITS POSSIBLE

SOLUTIONS

Long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns are

referred to as climate change. These changes could be caused by
natural processes, such oscillations in the solar cycle. But since
the 1800s, human activities—primarily the combustion of fossil
fuels like coal, oil, and gas—have been the primary cause of
climate change.

Fossil fuel combustion produces greenhouse gas emissions that

serve as a blanket around the planet, this traps the heat from the
sun and increasing temperatures.

Carbon dioxide and methane are two examples of greenhouse gas

emissions that are contributing to climate change. According to
the report research, these are produced,

for instance, while burning coal or gasoline to heat a building.

Carbon dioxide can also be released during forest and land
clearing. Methane emissions are primarily produced by waste
landfills. Among the major emitters are energy, industry,
transportation, buildings, agriculture, and land use.

How does climate change impact agriculture and food supply?

We have had an interview with an information officer at

Department of Agriculture. He is Dr. Rodrigo P. Sonico, whom
that helped us gather information about the impact, problems,
solutions, and programs concerning climate change.

We’ve asked few questions and the first concept mentioned by

Dr. Sonico is “photoperiodism”. It gives relevance to a fact that
a change in climate is known to affect seasonal timing.

Photoperiodism is the ability of plants and animals to measure the

environmental length of day and night. There are days that the
duration of day is longer than the night duration and vice versa.
He said that there are seasons that agricultural production is
lesser, this is when the daylight is shorter, which supposed to help
the plants grow. He emphasized that when climate change
accompanied this season, this is the period wherein it is harder to
grow crops.

Furthermore, he had discussed about global warming that results

to desertification. High climate temperature makes the
evaporation process faster, wherein soil will immediately dry.
The effect of desertification will also affect the agricultural food
productivity. If production is affected, then animals will also be
affected. Here then, human wouldn't be able to expect for meats
and milks given particularly by cows.

To address this problem, PAGASA give beforehand information

that helps and make people more alert when there's going to be a
disaster. What the agriculture does to secure food productivity is
that they evacuate animals and purposely harvest plants even
before these disasters affect the animals and plants.

The programs that the Department of Agriculture supports for the

mitigation of climate change is the prohibition of biomass
burning just like the woods, crops, manure, and some garbage
that pollutes air, resulting to ozone layer depletion.
They strictly follow the anti-burning law which is the Republic
Act (RA) 9003 known as the Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000.

To wrap it up, these were the information gathered during our

interview with him.

However, to give further study, men's activities have become the

primary cause of climate change, but the usage of greenhouse
gases are helpful to the economy. So how could we deal with
this?

1. Embrace Electric Vehicles, Public Transport, and Other

Non-Motorized Options for getting around changing our main
energy sources to clean and renewable energy.
Mass adoption of electric vehicles and public transport — along
with walking, biking, skating, and scooting —is key to cutting
the greenhouse gas emissions from fuel-based motor vehicles.

2. Reduce Food Loss and Waste and Shift to More

Sustainable Diets
It’s important to reduce food waste at every step of the food
system. Improve farming and encourage vegan diets. One of the
best ways for individuals to help stop climate change is by
reducing their meat and dairy consumption, or by going fully
vegan. Businesses and food retailers can improve farming
practices and provide more plant-based products to help people
make the shift. Support farms that use organic fertilizers and
making beef and other meat products.

3. Halt Deforestation and Commit to Rebuilding Damaged

Ecosystems.
The rapid deforestation of the Earth. Forests are crucial in the
fight against climate change and protecting them is an important
climate solution. Cutting down forests on an industrial scale
destroys giant trees which could be sucking up huge amounts of
carbon.
Protect the oceans. Oceans also absorb large amounts of carbon
dioxide from the atmosphere, which helps to keep our climate
stable. But many are overfished, used for oil and gas drilling or
threatened by deep sea mining. Protecting oceans and the life in
them is ultimately a way to protect ourselves from climate
change.

There are actions each of us can take as individuals to help halt

this—going paperless and buying recycled paper products,
planting trees, or supporting organizations that do this, and
recycling.

4. Invest in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

Disaster Risk Reduction protects the lives and livelihoods of
communities and individuals who are most vulnerable to
disasters or emergencies. Whether the crisis is caused by nature
or humans (or a combination of both), DRR limits its negative
impact on those who stand to lose the most. We can’t undo much
of climate change’s impact so far, but we can help the
communities who are hit hardest by these impacts to prepare for
and respond to these emergencies once they strike.

III. CONCLUSION

In the past few years, various initiatives have been launched to

try to curb climate change. Prominent among them are the 17
Sustainable Development Goals. The success of these kinds of
initiatives is largely dependent on environmental literacy drives
among populations that are often strangers to these major
political agreements, and on the development of a culture of care
for the climate. But what exactly do we mean by environmental
literacy?

Educating citizens, especially children, and raising their

awareness regarding the causes and
consequences of climate change. Climate change is caused by
human activities and is threatening the way we live. By
addressing climate change, we can build a sustainable world for
everyone, but we need to act now. Our aim was to promote
awareness of climate change, evaluate some of its adverse effects,
and suggest methods that could help enhance agricultural
production in areas here in the Philippines. Training in these
disciplines will enable people to better understand the physical

changes in our environment and provide us with the tools with

which to combat climate change. A system of training
along these lines will also train and qualify specialists for the
green jobs that will be created in a green economy. A better

understanding of climate change and its effects could increase the

chances of developing appropriate strategies to abate the negative
impacts of climate change, thereby enhancing both food security
and agricultural sustainability.

Let's do the solutions that can be done to better prevent climate

change. There are many ways to protect our nature, such as: Shift
to Renewable Energies, Air Pollution Prevention, Waste
Management & Recycling, Sea and Ocean Preservation and
Committing to Policy and Reform. In these ways we can help our
nature to prevent the worsening of climate change.

Our forests, rivers, oceans, and soils provide us with the food we
eat, the air we breathe and the water we irrigate our crops with.
We also rely on them for numerous goods and services we depend
on for our health, happiness and prosperity, so let's take good care
of our nature so that it can help us even more.

IV. INSIGHTS AND REALIZATION

Choosing climate change as a case to study was not our first

choice because we wanted something different or something
remarkable that people wouldn't give much attention to because
climate change is already a global concern. However, we realized
that it is not the topic itself that makes our case study unique, but
how we do it as a group. All of us in our group did this kind of
project for the first time, and we accepted it to be done without
any idea or assurance that we could really do it.

While doing the actual study, we have plenty of things to consider

before deciding, or else everything that we've done would end up
to nothing. For instance, we have to consider each other's time,
we have to adjust and respect each other's idea, we
have to be independent and brave to settle things for the interview
and ready ourselves to interact with people.

After the interview with Dr. Sonico, aside from the concepts and
ideas we have learned that he has mentioned and discussed with
us, we realize that socializing with people is a relief knowing that
we just did it as a group. We can't say that it is already the best
experience because we wanted to do more. Just after our
communication with him, we felt like doing more and better.

Lastly, giving focus to the case of climate change. As mentioned,

climate change is a global concern and if we include ourselves as
one of the people that gives more interest and awareness about it,
then we could make things work and a better pull in surpassing
the issue. There are many stressors affecting the nature and
climate change is just one those. Some threat to nature includes
pollution, invasive species, and the exploitation of organisms. On
the other hand, when it comes to climate change, people are the
problem, and we must also be the solution. Climate change needs
behavior change, and change is what we need. We must give
importance and action in addressing climate change because
studying climate change, prepares us for the future. It must start
within us now so we can educate people because as per assessing
our current situation; is there any more hope for the future?
