Exercise has many benefits, such as increasing energy, reducing the risk of health

problems, and releasing endorphins. Fitness gyms are one of the best places to exercise,

with a wide selection of equipment and well-educated staff. To provide a good quality of

service, fitness gyms should have an organized management system that keeps records of

members, employees, inventory, and bills. This system will help guide customers in

doing proper exercise and improve the productivity of business owners.

In this project, the proponents designed and developed the Strong Tower

Management System that solved the problems in the manual process that the gymnasium

has. The proposed system provides a more efficient way of managing service, inventory,

workouts, and membership plans. The proponents used Rapid Application Development

as the basis for the development of the Strong Tower Management System.

The Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress is a

web-based system that uses many different application programming interfaces. The

system was developed using Hypertext Mark-up Language, Cascading Style Sheets,

JavaScript, and PHP as well as MySQL for the database. The implementation entails the

use of a variety of resources, including hardware, software, and people. A web server is

also needed to host the system and allow end users to access it.

The usability of the system was measured using SUMI which focused on

efficiency, affect, helpfulness, control, and learnability was administered to test the

system’s usability. Based on the result of usability testing, the system was able to meet

the expectation and requirements of the owner of Strong Tower Fitness Gym which

makes it usable.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Project

Exercise has many benefits, such as increasing energy, reducing the risk of health

problems, and releasing endorphins that make people feel happier and relaxed. Fitness

gyms are one of the places people should visit to perform physical activities, and they have

a wide selection of equipment and well-educated staff (Pruthi et al., 2020).

The fitness industry is growing at an exponential rate, which means consumers are

becoming more aware of their wellness. This has also led to a rise in competitive fitness

alternatives such as workout apps and smart home exercise machines (Kaur et al., 2020).

Running a gym are a lot of things that go into it. Some common problems can come

up and there are always things that need to be fixed or improved. Whether it’s dealing with

a lack of members, equipment issues, or financial concerns, many gym owners face

challenges at some point. (Johnson, 2023).

Kirsty (2019) There are many facets to running a fitness club; processes, customer

care, finances, and equipment maintenance are just some of those. Club owners need to

spin a lot of places at once to make a gym work. And if one plate falls and smashes it can

sometimes spell disaster for the whole show.

To provide a good quality of service, fitness gyms should have an organized

management system that would keep records of gym members, attendance of gym

employees, inventory, and the payment of bills to customers. Trainers do not have much

time to look out who comes when every time in the gym. So, at this moment, the gym and

visitor management systems help give benefits, save trainers time, and grow productivity.

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Situation Analysis

Strong Tower Fitness Gym, Pangasinan’s largest gym, was owned by Mr. Wilson

De Guzman, located at Belmonte Street, Urdaneta, Pangasinan. Based on the interview

with the owner the existing process was the inventory through paper-based which they put

a lot of time to record in-out products and customers transactions. Thus, equipment

maintenance inventory and transaction recording are also done manually, which takes a

long time. Additionally, the manual procedure may also result in the gathering of inaccurate

information.

The Strong Tower Management System could resolve issues faced through the

manual process including customer enrollment and client information. Whereas the

managing inventory could update through the system that helps them to save time and keep

a thorough record of consumer transactions and could prevent loss of records. It would

automate the manual process of registration, manual setting of workouts and training

programs, manual transaction, monitoring health progress, manual inventory of

equipment’s and lastly the generation of reports.

Statement of Objectives

The primary purpose of this research was to create, design, develop, and monitor a

Strong Tower Management System.

Specifically, it sought to meet the following objectives:

1. Describe the existing process of the Strong Tower Fitness Gym.

2. Identify problems encountered in the manual system.

3. Describe the features of the proposed system.

4. Test the usability of the developed system in terms of the following:

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

a. efficiency
b. effect
c. helpfulness
d. control and learnability
e. overall usability

Significance of the Study

The proposed system significantly improves the owner and its employee above the

manual process of registering new members, monitoring, payment, and inventory. The

management system would help the following recipients:

Administrator. Using the system, they could easily ensure that all administration

and operations run smoothly in the gym. They are also responsible for leading and

maintaining their facilities' day-to-day strategies and operations.

Gym Owners. The system would provide convenience to the gym owners as it

records transactions with its clients, gym equipment, and the attendance of employees

working in the gym, it would help monitor business.

Secretary. This system will help them learn more about the types of data they may

need to watch out for as they continue to work as general secretaries.

Scope and Limitations

Trainers. Using the system, the trainer can manage training sessions and activities,

providing a platform through which customers and trainers can contact each other anytime

and provide their feedback in the most effective way.

Members/Customers. It would provide privacy on their personal information, and

they would not be confused about what workout they would do. The system would provide

guidelines for performing exercises.

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Future Researchers. This system would give them ideas that they could use in

their research related to this topic.

The project entitled Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring

Application, includes storing information of members, trainers, supplementary,

membership plan and. The system had four (4) users: super admin, secretary, trainer, and

members.

The admin had complete control of the system. The admin could also manage the

employees account and branches. Additionally, the admin is the most responsible for

monitoring members transactions and maintaining the system. The secretary had the

capability to manage the members’ account in assigning a trainer for them based on their

membership plan. Additionally, the secretary could access the workout categories, exercise

categories, equipment and many more. Lastly, secretary is the one who verify and accept

the clients account and do the inventory for the supplements. The trainer had a control in

clients account to assigned workout plans. Also, trainer could view different services. The

members’ account could monitor their BMI through daily update using the system and

members could view the assigned workout plan by the trainer. Also, members could view

the history of their workouts. Additionally, members could view their membership plan,

trainer, validity of membership plan and list of workouts. Lastly, members could view the

supplements that sell on the gym.

The system was automated system for managing the registration, inventory,

monitoring, and transactional processes previously used in the gym. This facilitates

transaction speed and provides more accurate and reliable data. The Strong Tower

Management System aids in maintaining all records of daily activities and transactions

while also promoting productivity in the gym. The system’s scope, however, is limited to

Urdaneta City only. The system does not allow add-to-cart. The system does not include a

payment process. The system is only intended as a web-based management system

although users could still access the system using their mobile phones thru their browsers.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes a review of related literature and studies for the system,

dubbed "Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress," which

aided and served as a guide in creating the system.

Gym Existing Process and Problems Encountered

The existing process of most gyms requires much manual work, which takes longer,

such as misplaced index cards, human error, and a lack of ballpoint pens and index cards.

This is unreliable, as one wrong entry could take much time to detect.

ROSLAN (2019) Gym Management System for MN Fitness Gym was an online

management system that utilized by MN Fitness Gym's gym members, visitors, and

management staff. The system was designed to help the management staff administer the

gym member’s record online, replacing the traditional method that the gym used.

Jane (2019) claimed that manual inventory systems are time consuming and lack

communication. They require physical inventory counts to be performed frequently to

control the items in the inventory, making them difficult to use. Technological inventory

systems provide updates, making it easier to check and order supplies from the office desk.

Features of Gym Management System

Fitness Club Management System this health club administration system will assist

in overcoming such issues by allowing members to schedule desired slots online. In this

fitness club system, there is 3 entities namely, Admin, Member, and Trainer. Admin could

login using credentials. Packages may be managed by the administrator, discounts, and

Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress 7

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

removing old packages. Admin may control member information by adding, updating, and

removing members. An administrator could access an individual member's package

information. Admin may also check the trainer's attendance record for the member.

Members could login using credentials. They could view their profile and list of trainers.

A trainer could log in using credentials. A trainer could set their profile. A trainer could

take member’s attendance daily, they could also change their password in case of security

(Nevon, 2022).

Usability Testing

According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), usability is

an outcome of use which can be defined as “the extent to which a system, product or service

can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and

satisfaction in a specified context of use”.

Therefore, usability testing can be described as the formal assessment of the extent

to which interaction with a product or system is effective, efficient, and perceived as

satisfactory by users. It allows end users to test Electronic Patient Reported Outcome (ePRO)

systems and provides developers the opportunity to evaluate usability.

Based on the ISO definition, the three measures of usability are effectiveness,

efficiency, and satisfaction. Effectiveness refers to the ability of participants to perform

tasks to achieve pre-determined goals completely and accurately without negative

consequences. A negative consequence in the case of an ePRO system might be the

accidental selection of a questionnaire option (due to suboptimal interface layout) which

would send a red alert to clinicians. Efficiency relates to the number of resources required

by participants to achieve the pre-specified goals. An effective and efficient system or

Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress 8

Pangasinan State University – Bayambang Campus
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

product could be considered as one that offers a better way of achieving specific goals

compared to the current manner. Satisfaction refers to the subjective opinions of

participants based on their experience interacting with a system or product.

Some authors consider satisfaction with a system or product as equivalent to

desirability the presence of which might facilitate the adoption of a system or product with

flawed effectiveness and efficiency. However, it can be argued that a system with

effectiveness or efficiency issues would soon be abandoned regardless of initial

desirability. An ePRO system needs to be rated highly on the three measures of usability

to be considered fit for purpose. In turn, a system perceived as fit for purpose has a better

chance of adoption by patients and clinician’s post-implementation. The context of use

refers to the characteristics of the users, tasks, equipment, and the physical and social

setting in which a system or product is used.

Evaluation of the measures of usability may be achieved by recruiting participants

from the target population to perform pre-determined tasks using the product or system and

provide feedback on their user experiences. Usability testing also provides ePRO

developers the opportunity to detect and fix issues early during system development. It is

important that usability testing is conducted iteratively during system development to

ensure that issues are detected and addressed adequately prior to full-scale implementation.

This ensures that the final product or system is fit for purpose and may reduce attrition

rates post-implementation (Aiyegbusi, 2019)

Synthesis

The synthesis allows us to test and validate hypotheses, understand key processes,

and better design future research efforts. Indeed, when a discipline succeeds in synthesis,

Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress 9

Pangasinan State University – Bayambang Campus
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

it can make distinct, often epoch-making progress, leading the discipline to higher levels

of understanding of the system being studied (Stewart, 1990).

There are existing projects that have been already developed for the management

of gyms. There’s a program that helps gyms and other similar organizations manage

automate and organize their daily activities. It manages databases, communication, sales,

planning, and training presentation programs, among other things. The studies also

depicted various user requirements and system requirements that could be implemented in

the proposed system. The significant functional requirements are the following:

Membership administration that keeps up-to-date records of training sessions, and

members' contact information, and addresses. Order management require the secure

collection and receipting money. Keeping good records helps companies protect

institutional memory as well as maintain evidence of activities, transactions, and decisions.

An effective records management system can save money on storage and improve an

organization’s efficiency (Weller, 2022). Permits the management, recording, and

reporting of financial data, including earnings and expenses. Tools and equipment data,

member participation, control over gym instructors’ availability. It helps with the

organizing of instructor and costumer details, availability, schedule, and history, among

other things.

The system is like previous studies; nevertheless, it differs in system type and

usable functionality. The system also provides application to fill up, membership

registration, given planned workout plan and diet plan, able to request instructor. The

fitness training center handled by the system administrator. These studies served as a

reference for the developer in terms of the features and developments that were

Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress 10

Pangasinan State University – Bayambang Campus
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

implemented into the developed system. The non-functional requirements of the proposed

system are the following:

Usability, the system will be easy to use due to the user interface design, allowing

users to easily access information and navigate menus, and Reliability, the system will be

usable and include links that are simple to find. Design thinking process is to empathize

with your users, if you understand your users, you can make designs that are relevant for

them (Mortensen, 2022). The system will display accurate information and send out error

messages when it finds failure or defects. Lastly, the performance where the system will

be data processing optimized, enabling speedy completion of functions and operation.

Conceptual Framework

The proponent employed the Input-Process-Output (IPO) model, which gave a

broad framework and guidelines for the project's direction.

Figure 1 describes the existing process of the Strong Tower Fitness Gym, identifies

problems encountered in the manual system, and describes the features of the proposed

system and the usability test of the system.

The proponent conducted research, interviews, document analysis, and

observations of the current system to understand the system requirements better. These

inputs were necessary for the design and development of the proposed system.

The Rapid Application Development technique, which comprises requirement

planning, user design, construction, and cutover, was used to convert these inputs to the

intended outputs. As a result, the Strong Tower Management System with Health Progress

Monitoring was developed.

METHODOLOGY

Project Design

The proponent used descriptive and developmental research to develop the Strong

Tower Management System with Health Progress Monitoring. Descriptive research aims

to describe a population, situation, or phenomenon accurately and systematically. It could

answer what, where, when, and how questions, but not why questions. A descriptive

research design could use various research methods to investigate one or

more variables. Descriptive Research Definition, Types, Methods & Examples (n.d.)

The " Strong Tower Management System with Health Progress Monitoring "

project was developed using the RAD. Rapid Application Development (RAD)

methodology is a flexible way to create and deploy software applications quickly. The RAD

method is effectively designed to adapt to changes and new inputs like features and functions,

updates, etc. It is designed to be flexible to changes and to accept. New inputs, like features

and functions, at every step of the development process. 6 Essential Questions to Understand

Rapid Application Development Methodology (2022)

Figure 2. Rapid Application Development

Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress 13

Pangasinan State University – Bayambang Campus
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

The developed project follows the Rapid Application Development methodology,

separated into four phases: requirement planning, user design, construction, and cutover.

Figure 2. shown above are the implementation phases in the Rad model.

Requirements Planning

According to (6 Essential Questions to Understand Rapid Application

Development Methodology, 2022) this phase is equivalent to a project scoping meeting.

Although the planning phase is condensed compared to other project management

methodologies, this is a critical step for the project's ultimate success.

During this stage, developers, clients (software users), and team members

communicate to determine the project's goals and expectations and current and potential

issues that would need to be addressed during the build.

It is essential that everyone could evaluate the goals and expectations for the project

and weigh in. By getting approval from each key stakeholder and developer, teams could

avoid miscommunications and costly change orders.

User Design

Once the project is scoped out, it is time to jump into development, building the

user design through various prototype iterations. (6 Essential Questions to Understand

Rapid Application Development Methodology, 2022)

This is the meat and potatoes of the RAD methodology—and what sets it apart from

other project management strategies. During this phase, clients work hand in hand with

developers to ensure their needs are met at every step in the design process. It is almost

Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress 14

Pangasinan State University – Bayambang Campus
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

like customizable software development where the users could test each product prototype

at each stage to ensure it meets their expectations.

All the bugs and kinks are worked out in an iterative process. The developer designs

a prototype, and the client (user) tests it. Then they come together to communicate what

worked and what did not.

This method allows developers to tweak the model until they reach a good design.

The software developers and the clients learn from the experience to ensure there is no

potential for something to slip through the cracks.

Construction

(6 Essential Questions to Understand Rapid Application Development

Methodology, 2022) stated that most problems and changes were addressed during the

thorough iterative design phase, developers could construct the final working model more

quickly than they could by following a traditional project management approach.

The software development team of programmers, coders, testers, and developers

work together during this stage to ensure everything works smoothly and that the result

satisfies the client’s expectations and objectives.

This third phase is essential because the client still gets to give input throughout the

process. They could suggest alterations, changes, or even new ideas that could solve

problems as they arise.

Cutover

(6 Essential Questions to Understand Rapid Application Development

Methodology, 2022) claimed that this is the implementation phase, where the finished

product goes to launch. It includes data conversion, testing, the changeover to the new

system, and user training.

The proponents integrate and test the proposed system while the coders and clients

continue to look for bugs in the system.

Population Locale of Study

The study was conducted in Urdaneta City and Bayambang, Pangasinan, and an

interview with the owner of the Fitness Gym was conducted to determine what and how

the work is done inside their gymnasium. The other members were also interviewed about

their experiences and to understand the different processes inside the organization.

To collect more important data for the study, a survey questionnaire would be

distributed to thirty (30) employees of Strong Tower Fitness Gym-Urdaneta Branch via a

google form. A simple random sampling procedure used for selecting the participants.

Data Instrumentation

The following are the data-gathering tools that the proponents would use to further

describe the needed information about the respondents.

For Objectives No. 1 and No. 2, the proponents used structured interviews to

gather data and information for the system's development. For Objective No. 1, the

interview focused on understanding the existing process of the Strong Tower Fitness Gym.

For Objective No. 2, the interview focused on determining the problems encountered in

the company’s current work process.

For Objective 3, the proponents used prototyping tools to show visualizations of

the system’s design to understand the look and feel of the final product and gain insights

into how real users would use the product.

For Objective 4, The proponents used an online survey questionnaire based on

Software Usability Measurement Inventory (SUMI) focusing on: (a) Efficiency, (b) Effect,

(c) Helpfulness, (d) Control, and (e) Learnability. To understand how the end-users used

the system and their preferred features in measuring the usability of the Strong Tower

Management System with Health Monitoring Application according to the user’s

evaluation and determine whether the system was helpful and efficient.

Data Analysis

This section covered the data analysis tools that would be utilized to collect and

understand the data required to create the system development requirements.

For objective 1, the data gathered in the interview was utilized as a guide for

automating the current system's processes. The manual processes would be visually

represented using a Data Flow Diagram.

For objective 2, the proponents identified and assessed the company's current

issues with the manual process, using the information gleaned from the interview. The

manual processes would be visually represented using the Ishikawa diagram.

For objective 3, the proponents employed the Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD)

for the system's database design. The proponents used Data Flow Diagram to visualize the

system's flow and get a picture of the functionality needed for the system.

For Objective 4, the data was gathered from the SUMI questionnaire. The

proponents computed the overall mean based on the responses of the testers, and the mean

was interpreted using the 4-point.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

The existing process of the strong tower fitness gym

The Existing Process of the Strong Tower Fitness Gym. The proponents used a data

flow diagram (DFD) to show the flow of the processes and data transfer from one entity to

another. It shows the system's flow and functionalities, as illustrated in the model below.

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

The existing process of Strong Tower Gymnasium had branches around

Pangasinan. Because of that, he needs to hire some employees to manage his gymnasium.

Using logbooks, notebooks, and some index cards, he records all the essential details of his

employees. Furthermore, all the customers who want to become a member must register in

their registration form. Afterward, the gymnasium employee records the customer's

information to become a fitness gym member. The member of the Strong Tower Fitness

Gym needs to choose the wanted plan they want, like silver, gold, or platinum plan, where

they could start building. Using different equipment, the members could use all the

equipment with the permission of the trainers/employees of the gym. One of the gym's

employees, a trainer, could provide services to a specific member in additional payment.

Strong Tower Fitness Gym recommends some of its products to its members, like whey

protein and amino acids. Lastly, the owner uses his notes and cards to record all the

inventory details regarding sales, bills, and payment of the products.

Problems encountered using the manual process of strong tower fitness gym.

Figure 5. Ishikawa Diagram

Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress 22

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

To describe the problems encountered by the company with its manual operation,

the proponents interviewed the owner and branch manager of the Strong Tower

Gymnasium.

According to Mr. Wilson De Guzman, owner of Strong tower Gymnasium, the

main problem in the manual process is a human error in their management. The most

common mistake is misplacing the logbook that keeps the member’s details, including their

transactions. Also, they manually compute their monthly sales to generate their sales report.

After that, the sales report's hard copy is handed over to the owner.

Another problem encountered in the manual process is the paper-based product

inventory. The branch manager manually records the quantity of each product every time

there are newly arrived stocks. In addition, the branch manager updates their remaining

stock quantity daily before generating an inventory report. Some significant problems in

managing inventory manually include being time-consuming, redundant, and vulnerable to

errors. In addition, records may also be misplaced or lost.

Features of the strong tower management system

This provides a summary of the expected features that the system must possess to

perform its functionalities.

The Strong Tower Management System with Health Monitoring Progress would be

the official site of the Strong Tower Fitness Gym. This time, the system's workflow could

be considered dissimilar from the current system wherein operations are done manually.

To start the process, data serves as the input. The data entered by the users would

be directly stored in the database. The system provides information regarding customer

info, sales transaction, contracts, inventory details, and reports, such as sales reports and

inventory reports that are stored to facilitate faster retrieval.

Each user could access features depending on their user type inside the company.

Some features are not accessible by a typical employee and could only be accessed by the

company's owner.

To start with the system walkthrough, the data flow diagram of the Strong Tower

Management System with Health Monitoring Progress is shown in figure 6.

The idea behind Strong Tower Management System is like how the current process

and other related studies are designed. The system's workflow differs from the current

process, wherein operations are done manually.

The developed system serves as a way of centralizing all information entered in one

system for easier record keeping. It is also expected to provide access between the Owner,

Employee, and Member.

The owner could manage the inventory, membership plans, walk-in clients,

employees, and branches.

The secretary could manage the services, inventory, membership plans, client

plans, and walk-in clients. Additionally, the secretary places the client's trainer based on

their membership plan.

The trainer could manage the clients placed by the secretary, and the trainer is the

one who places clients' workout plans.

The members could manage their BMI, today’s workout, workout plans, and past

activities. Additionally, members could view the available supplements that could be

bought.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

Exercise has many benefits, such as increasing energy, reducing the risk of health

problems, and releasing endorphins. Fitness gyms are one of the best places to exercise,

with a wide selection of equipment and well-educated staff. To provide a good quality of

service, fitness gyms should have an organized management system that keeps records of

members, employees, inventory, and bills. This system would help guide customers in

doing proper exercise and improve the productivity of business owners.

The proponents designed and developed the Strong Tower Management System

that solved the problems in the manual process that the gymnasium has. The proposed

system provides a more efficient way of managing service, inventory, workouts, and

membership plans. The developed system also provided a portal for members to monitor

their BMI and activities.

The main objective of this project is to design and develop a management system

for Strong Tower Fitness Gym to lessen the time consumed in performing vital tasks such

as inventory management and sales monitoring. More specifically, the study described the

existing process the gymnasium implements. Furthermore, the study also identified the

problems encountered by the stakeholders with the current process. The study also showed

the features integrated into the developed system. Lastly, the usability of the developed

system was measured in terms of efficiency, affect, helpfulness, control, and learnability.

To achieve these objectives, the proponents used Rapid Application Development

as the foundation for the development of the Strong Management System with Health

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Monitoring Progress, followed by an interview to identify the existing process of the

current system, problems encountered with the manual process, and identify the features

to be integrated into the system to maximize the system’s functionality.

Moreover, significant result based on the problem were also given. The following

findings were provided by the research objective: (1) Describe the existing process of the

Strong Tower Fitness Gym; (2) Identify problems encountered in the manual system; (3)

Describe the features of the proposed system; (4) Test the usability of the developed system

using SUMI.

The most common problem in the manual process is human error. This includes

misplacing the logbook, compute monthly sales, and manually generate a sales report.

Paper-based product inventory is also a major problem, as it is time-consuming, redundant,

and vulnerable to errors. Additionally, records may be misplaced or lost.

The feature of the developed system includes viewing of membership plan, trainers,

and available supplements. Through the system the inventory process and generating report

is easier and efficiently. Also, through the system clients could monitor their health

progress using the BMI.

A survey focused on efficiency, affect, helpfulness, control, and learnability was
