Do skeletons grow?

Who is taller? An adult or a child? An adult is taller! This is because their bones are not only
bigger, but also longer than a child! As a child grows, their skeleton gets bigger as well! The bones
in the skeleton grows and only stops growing when a person reaches adulthood.

Did you know that babies have more bones than an adult? A newborn infant has around 300
bones while an adult only has 206! This is because some of these bones will combine together
as we grow.

ACTIVITY!

Let us compare bone sizes! Use a measuring tape to measure the length of your bones! You can
ask your friends to help you. Record the length of your bones and your friend’s bones in the table
below.

Name Forearm Shin (knee to Spine / cm Arm span / Leg length /

(elbow to ankle) / cm cm cm
wrist) / cm

1. From the table, predict who is the tallest. __________________________

2. Give a reason for you answer in (1).

3. Plot the arm span of each person into a bar chart.

4. What can we conclude from this experiment?

How to grow healthy bones?

Our bones grow until we become an adult. Certain foods and activities can help our bones grow
longer and stronger too!

Calcium is good for bones! What are some foods that

have calcium?

Exercises such as hiking, jogging and dancing are

also good for the bones! They help to make the
bones stronger! We need to have strong bones to
stay strong and healthy. Strong bones cannot
______________ easily and are heavy! Weak
bones can _____________ easily.

ACTIVITY: X-ray Skeleton

Cut out the pieces of the X-ray from the last page and assemble it into a skeleton!

Muscles

Muscles are attached to bones. They are the part of

the body helps you to move. We also use muscles
to push and pull objects.

Muscles are found all over the body. Most of them

are found right under the skin, while others are deep
within our body.

Determine if the activities need muscles or not. Tick the correct box.

Activity Needs muscles Does not need muscles

Running
Sleeping
Eating
Blinking
Thinking
Talking

Say cheese! Did you know that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile?

How Do Muscles Work?

Muscles can do two actions: contract and relax

When muscles contract, they get shorter and fatter. When they contract, they pull the bones that
they are attached to, making the bone move.

When muscles relax, they get longer and thinner.

Muscles work in pairs. When one muscle

contracts, the other muscle relaxes.

ACTIVITY

1. Pick up a book with your hand.

2. Hold your hand straight out.
3. Feel the muscles in your upper arm.
4. Bend your arm to pull the book towards you.
5. Fell the muscles in your upper arm again.

What do you feel?

Experiment:

Who is the strongest?

1. Sit down on a chair with your legs stretched

straight out. Place a heavy object on your
feet.
2. Start the timer.
3. Hold your legs straight for as long as you can.
4. When your knees bend, stop the timer.
5. Record the time in the table below.

Name Time (seconds)

1. Suggest one thing that should be done to make sure the test was fair.

2. Which student had the strongest muscle? Explain why.

_________________________________________________________________________

3. Predict how long it would take you to hold up a heavier object.

THINK!

Where is the strongest muscle in the body?

Important muscles

Some of the muscles in our body are very important. They help up to move muscles in the body.

For example:

1) _________________- pumps blood throughout our body.

2) _________________- helps us to breathe
3) _________________- helps us to chew and talk

Discuss! How do we make our muscles bigger?
