Samaon
Sulaiman

Samaon Sulaiman
a Filipino musician who is a recipient of
the National Living Treasure award. The
Maguindanaon is known for his mastery
of the indigenous kutyapi instrument. He
achieved the highest level of excellence in
the art of kutyapi playing.

Background
Learning to play the kutyapi from his uncle when
he was about 13 years old, he has since, at 35
become the most acclaimed kutyapi master and
teacher of his instrument in Libutan and other
barangays of Maganoy town, deeply influencing
the other acknowledged experts in kutyapi in the
area, such as Esmael Ahmad, Bitul Sulaiman,
Nguda Latip, Ali Ahmad and Tukal Nanalon.

Recognized in Maganoy for his skills at 35
years old.

Death
Samaon Sulaiman dies on May 21, 2011.

Juan F.
Nakpil

Juan F. Nakpil
May 26, 1899 known as Juan Nakpil, was
a Filipino architect, teacher and a
community leader. In 1973, he was
named one of the National Artists for
architecture. He was regarded as the
Dean of Filipino Architects.

Background
He studied engineering at the University of
Californiaand later, at the University of Kansas,
where he received his bachelor's degree in
Mechanical Engineering. He then studied
architecture at the Fontainebleau School of Fine
Arts in France upon the recommendation of Jean
Jacques Haffner, one of his professors at the
Harvard Graduate School of Architecture.

The Capitol Theater was an Art Deco masterpiece


by Juan Nakpil built in the 1930s.

The Recognition for


Exemplary Skills
He was an architect, teacher and civic leader, is a
pioneer and innovator in Philippine architecture. In
essence, Nakpil's greatest contribution is his belief that
there is such a thing as Philippine Architecture,
espousing architecture reflective of Philippine
traditions and culture.

In 1952, President Quirino appointed Nakpil to be a


member of the National Rizal Day Committee. He was
hailed as a National Artist for Architecture in 1973.
