for the Tangible

and Intangible Arts
President Ferdinand E. Marcos promulgated
Presidential Proclamation no.1001 dated April
27,1972, which established the National Artist
Award. It is a lifetime recognition of the artists’
accomplishments with appropriate emoluments
and honors to deserving individuals as
recommended by the Cultural Center of the
Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission
for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

National Artists
The National Artist Award is the
highest distinction bestowed
upon Filipino Artists whose body
of work is recognized by their
peers and more importantly by
their countrymen as sublime
expression of Philippine music,
dance, theatre, visual arts,
literature, film and media arts,
architecture and design.
THE INSIGNIA OF THE ORDER OF
NATIONAL ARTISTS
 Criteria
• Living artists who have been Filipino citizens for the last
ten years prior to nomination as well as those who have
died after the establishment of the award in 1972 but were
Filipino citizens at the time of their death;
• Artists who have helped build a Filipino sense of
nationhood through the content and form of their works;
• Artists who have distinguished themselves by pioneering
in a mode of creative expression or style, making an
impact on succeeding generations of artists;
• Artists who have created a significant body of works
and/or have consistently displayed excellence in the
practice of their art form, enriching artistic expression or
style; and
• Artists who enjoy broad acceptance through prestigious
national and/or international recognition, awards in
prestigious national and/or international events, critical
acclaim and/or reviews of their works, and/or respect and
esteem from peers within an artistic discipline.
 The first conferment of the National Artist
Award was held in 1972, when it was conferred
posthumously to Fernando Amorsolo, the
premier Filipino painter. This was followed the
next year to : architect Juan Nakpil, dancer
Francisca Reyes Aquino, poet Jose Garcia Villa,
composer Antonio Molina, sculptor Guillermo
Tolentino, and painter Carlos “Botong”
Francisco.

• develop choreographies for Bayanihan. Some of her most
praised dances are the singkil ; the vinta , a dance in honor of
the Filipino sailing arts; tagabili , a story about conflicts
between tribes; pagdiwata and salidsid , a dance from the
Philippine mountains.
• The company toured the world several times with typical
Filipino folk dance performances and received many laudatory
reviews.

 • The first modern dance performance by Alice
Reyes is with Modern Dance Company in 1970
in collaboration with artists Ray Albano
and Lee Aguinaldo became a great success.

the US at Mount Holyoke College
in Massachusetts and stay in the Philippines.
