ASSIGNMENT 1
SANTIAGO ENEME OVONO WATSON (BCE19096467)
St. Mary’s Cathedral.

This cathedral situated in the city of Kuala Lumpur, specifically in Jalan

Raja near Dataran Merdaka, is Anglican church built in 1894.

History.
The first St. Mary’s church was built in 1887 near where is now located the
Malaysian Police HQ at Bikit Aman, and it was a little structure able to
accommodate 95 people made in wood with a cost of around 1000 USD.
This small church served to worship for a scant group of Anglicans around
Kuala Lumpur in this period.
In 1893, a decision was made to build a new church because the group of
Anglicans was growing. The chosen site was beside the Parade Ground
(now Dataran Merdeka or Independence Square) of the Selangor Club.
It should be noted that for the construction of the new church, many
personalities of these period of time contributed with money to this
project, even people that were not Anglican. The construction
commenced in 1894 and the design was created by A.C. Norman, an
architect that also designed The Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
On February 9, 1895, the ‘first brick church erected in the native States of
Malay Peninsula’ was consecrated by the same Bishop G.F. Hose in the
presence of a large and representative congregation including the Rev
H.W. Haines, Archdeacon Henham and Mr A.R. Venning.
On 1958 the back of the Main Church was extended to accommodate a
hall called the Jubilee Hall. On 8 September 1983, St Mary’s Church was
proclaimed the Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin by the Bishop of
West Malaysia, the Rt Rev Tan Sri J.G. Savarimuthu.
Today, St Mary’s is the cathedral of the Diocese of West Malaysia of the
Anglican Church of the Provence of South East Asia, and still stands in its
strategic location in the most historical and charming section of the
nation’s capital. From here, the message that Jesus is Lord, that He died
for our sins and rose again, and that God calls everyone to turn and trust
in Him, continues to be preached.
Architecture.

The design of this cathedral was made by A.C.A. Norman, that was a
British architect of the 19th and 20th century that did several works in the
Colonial Malaysia as The Royal Selangor Club, Padu Prison, Kuala Lumpur
Library or The Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
This structure is inspired in the Early English Gothic architecture, that has
some characteristics as pointed arches, vaulted roofs, huge windows,
spires and buttresses. The Early English Period of English Gothic lasted
from the late 12th century until midway through the 13th century.

Organ.
The pipe organ installed in the church is a secondhand one built in 1898
by Henry Willis, the famous English organ maker who also made the organ
for St Paul's Cathedral in London and the original Grand Organ of
the Royal Albert Hall.
The Visit.
After search information about this historical place, I decided to go there
with a friend. We took the LRT from Putra Heights to Masjid Jamek Station
and then, we walked like 400 meters until Dataran Merdeka where there
are a spectaculars views and finally we arrived to de Cathedral.
When we arrived, we found that the church was decorated with the
nativity scene of Christ, also a woman was playing this sensational organ,
besides we had the opportunity to know an old man that works in the
church and told us some curiosities about this cathedral, and took the
chance of invite us to one of their Sunday Services, have a little fun and try
to know new people. During the visit, we saw a lot of tourists (Malays and
people from other countries) doing videos and taking photos around the
cathedral and also in.
To summit, I really enjoyed this visit because it was the first time that I
went to this zone of Kuala Lumpur and it is so beautiful and finally say that
I will recommend my other friends to visit this historical place because I
am sure they are going to have a good time.
