CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

This research is focused on the factors that influence grade 10 students in

choosing Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) courses. What made

them choose the strand? Is it only their second option? Or Did they get influenced

by their surroundings? In this research, we shall know what factors influenced

students to choose the ABM strand. The main reason for students choosing ABM

courses is their parents' influence, as they will dictate their future, and as Carpio

(2018) suggests that parents want to have a say on what is the 'right' or 'most

practical' course. Passion is also a factor, as some students have confused about

what they want to pursue in college. According to Digos (2016), Passion is the

most crucial factor, as it is an advantage for them to pursue the course they want.

Peers or friends are also factors that affect the students, as they may shift to that

course so that they and their friends will be together. Chico (2018) mentioned that

students’ ambition in life or the career that they wanted to pursue in the future is

due to their peer's influence.

This study is necessary for the incoming senior high school students as

well as for the current senior high school students. This research will also tackle

some of the important factors that led students to choose the ABM strand, like

their future plans, whether this strand will help them achieve their goals, and

many other things. First, since senior high school is made for the students to be

ready for college, they offer some options that will help students choose what they

want. For sure those who choose ABM want to become businessmen or women,

accountants, or do other business-related work. But not all students are sure about

their future, and some students blindly pick their stand and enroll there. So, it is

important for the students to be sure of what strand they choose because the

seniors in high school help us make decisions and be able to choose the right field

for us in college. So, this research will help the students decide if they really want

to choose this strand. That is why knowing the factors and reasons behind the

student's choice of the ABM strand is important.

These findings seek to know why Students choose the ABM strand and

what factors influence their decision in choosing the ABM strand. As we all know

there are many courses in Senior High School but why do students choose ABM

course? What career can they take with ABM strands? Do they want to have their

own businesses? Will this path help them in the near future? Do their parents

influence them? Is it their own passion and interest? Will it be essential for their

future? We want to know why they choose to become an ABM student.

The purpose of the study about the factors that influenced students in

choosing accountancy, business, and management is to understand the

motivations and decision-making processes of students when it comes to pursuing

these fields of study. By identifying the factors that influence their decisions,

educators and policymakers can develop strategies to better attract and retain

students in these fields. The study aims to explore various factors that may

influence a student's decision to pursue accountancy, business, or management.

These factors may include personal interests, parental influence, job prospects,

perceived prestige of the field, and educational background.

Statement of the Problem

The decision of students to choose a particular academic program is

influenced by various factors. In the field of accountancy, business, and

management, students' decisions may be affected by different factors such as

personal interest, career opportunities, family background, financial stability,

academic performance, and others. Understanding these factors can help

educational institutions develop effective strategies to attract and retain

students in these programs.

Specifically, this study will aim to provide answers to the following

questions:

1. What are the factors that led the student to choose ABM?

2. Did they get influenced by friends, family, or other factors?

3. Do their future career paths lead them to choose ABM?

Scope and Limitations

Scope:

The factors that influence students in choosing accountancy, business, and

management are numerous and varied. These factors can range from personal

interests and aptitudes to societal expectations and economic considerations.

Understanding these factors is important for educators, policymakers, and

employers who seek to attract and retain talented individuals in these fields.

Limitations:

It is important to note that the factors that influence students in choosing

accountancy, business, and management may vary depending on the cultural,

social, and economic context. Additionally, individual preferences and

experiences may also play a significant role in shaping career choices. Therefore,

while this analysis aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the factors that

influence students in choosing these fields, it is not exhaustive or definitive.

Significance of the Study

Understanding the factors that influence students in choosing accountancy,

business, and management as their fields of study is crucial for several reasons.

Firstly, it helps educational institutions to better understand the needs and

preferences of students, which can be used to improve academic programs and

curriculums to meet those needs. Secondly, it provides valuable insights into the

job market and industry trends, which can help institutions to tailor their programs

to reflect current demands in the workforce. Additionally, understanding why

students choose specific fields of study can help policymakers to address skills

gaps in certain industries and promote economic growth. It can also provide

insights into potential barriers or biases that may exist in the education system,

preventing certain groups from pursuing careers in these fields..
