CASE STUDY ON KHALTI (khalti.com)

Introduction
Electronic payment systems are increasing in numbers due to wide spread internet based banking
and shopping. Khalti is also one of the electronic payment system recently introduced in Nepal.
Khalti is a digital wallet for instant, secure and hassle- free online payments in Nepal. Khalti is
operated and owned by Sparrow Pay Pvt. Ltd. The parent company is Janaki Technology which
has been in the software product industry since 2010. Its office is situated in Hariharbhawan,
Lalitpur. Khalti is a digital payment service that provides cashless transactions for various bill
payments, mobile recharges, DTH payments, money transfers, domestic remittance, shopping and
wallet payments. Khalti also provides various offers & cash backs on various service payments.

Mode of Business
• Business-to-Business Model (B2B)
Khalti deals with other corporate houses or merchants to make transactions. To provide services to
Khalti users, Khalti exchanges services with such corporate houses or merchants. For example,
Khalti transfers Ncell to provide recharge information of Ncell users. Along with such information,
significant amount of fund is also transferred between Khalti and Ncell.

• Business-to-Customers Model (B2C)

Khalti facilitates its users by providing different services such as bill payments and mobile top-up.
These services aim to make tedious job easy for its customers. User-friendly interface and service
simplicity makes Khalti customer-centric.

• Customer-to-Customer Model (C2C)

Customers can make transactions among themselves by using Khalti service. Khalti provides
platform for its users to request and offer funds among themselves. Considering this feature, Khalti
can be said to being adopting C2C business model too.

Operation of Khalti
Khalti has integrated its system with some of the banks, financial institutions, government agencies
and private firms that are normally termed as merchants. Partnering up is a normal process with
complex mechanisms. The codes that make up the system and interface of Khalti is integrated with
that of the merchants and the Khalti system comes to action. Wide range of services is being
provided by Khalti to its customers. Some of the useful and attractive services provided by khalti are
as follows;

• Mobile Top-up, Internet Payment, Recharge Service, Landline Payment

• Airline Ticketing, DTH Payment, Midas Subscription, Electricity Bill Payment
Payment
Payment in Khalti is done through the wallet in the app. To have a wallet, a user must have a Khalti
account where he/she can load funds through banks using deposit vouchers. Unlike other digital
wallets, Khalti is easy to operate. Through the use of bank deposit vouchers that are deposited in
either NIBL or Machhapuchchhre Bank, a user can load fund to his/her account and perform the
transactions. User also can transfer funds from one wallet to another, bank account to wallet, and
from wallet to bank account. Once the user pays certain amount for the service he/she is using, the
balance is deducted from the wallet and once the wallet is empty, the cycle of loading the finds
repeat.

Advantage for Business and Organization

Khalti aims to facilitate transactions by making cashless transaction system. It has done collaboration
with different organizations to provide such services. The services of Khalti provides following
advantages.

• Wide range of services

• Anytime service
• Easy transaction system

Disadvantage of Business and Organization

• Government Regulation
Payments made outside the country using credit cards have always been subject to strict government
regulations. The government has also introduced some rules regarding digital payments, adding to
the misery. Many people have been discouraged by Nepal Rastra Bank's recently introduced
threshold for digital payments.

• Security
Currently, security is the second biggest concern for customers when it comes to mobile payments in
Nepal. Even though mobile payments allow customers to make payment transactions at their
convenience, many are concerned about the possibility of someone intercepting their payment
information. It is common for people to fear that their data will be breached through digital payment
sites.

• Slow user adaptation

Another one of the main challenges of mobile payment system in Nepal is the slow user adoption. A
lot of people in Nepal are still accustomed to the traditional methods of payments and are only
comfortable using cash and credit cards. Some may even consider the scheme of mobile payment to
be pointless. Another reason for slow user adoption could also be the differences in demographics.
People from different generations have their own preferences in making payments. While the
majority of Nepal’s population lies between the age group of 25–54 years and while a lot of the
youths are embracing the concept of digital payment in Nepal, there are still people from the older
generations that do not really approve of the concept of cashless transactions.
Conclusion
Khalti is teaching old generation people to use this app. It shows that Khalti is targeting every type of
customer from young to old. The security concern is backed by secure payment and rather than
saying Khalti is a secure payment, the customers can find the security in using Khalti. Moreover,
Khalti is sponsoring different events to make Nepalese citizens friendly with e-wallet systems. Even
different merchants and banks are not easily investing in Khalti, but as they see the opportunity, they
do not hesitate to put their money on Khalti.

Questions

• What are the chances that Khalti will compete with Esewa in the future?
• Why is Khalti more than a Digital Wallet?

service provided by the Esewa. The vision of Esewa is to reach as top as Mpesa (Biggest e-
commerce site). The major challenge to the Esewa is physical recharge card which is even used
by the illiterate people as well.
Questions
• Even in this technological era, why people are choosing hard cash over the digital
payment in Nepal?
• Why most of the populations are not aware about eSewa or any digital payment
portal?
• Esewa is getting tough competition from its major competitors (Khalti,
ipay,IMEpay), so how can eSewa sustain its number one positions in Nepalese
market.
