CHAPTER 1
1. Poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing
and shelter.
2. Inflation is a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.
3. Unemployment is the state of being unemployed.
4. Compelled means being force or oblige (someone) to do something.
5. Labor means work, especially hard physical work.
6. OFW (Overseas Filipino workers) is a person from the Philippines who is living and
working in another country, typically on a temporary basis.
7. Drastically - in a way that is likely to have a strong or far-reaching effect.
8. Pandemic - a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease over a whole country or the
world at a particular time.
9. PSA (Philippine Statistics Authority) – is the central statistical authority of the Philippine
government that collects, compiles, analyzes and publishes statistical information on
economic, social, demographic, political affairs and general affairs of the people of
the Philippines and enforces the civil registration functions in the country.
10. Heave - lift or haul (a heavy thing) with great effort.
11. Behavior- the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others.
12. Attitude-a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one
that is reflected in a person's behavior.
13. Performance - the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or
function.
14. Academic Performance-is the extent to which a student, teacher, or institution has
attained their short or long-term educational goals and is measured either by continuous
assessment or cumulative grade point average
15. Emotional Distress- refers to mental suffering as an emotional response to an experience
that arises from the effect or memory of a particular event, occurrence, pattern of events
or condition.
16. Psychological Distress- refers to non-specific symptoms of stress, anxiety and
depression.
17. Phenomenon-a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose
cause or explanation is in question.
18. National tragedy-a sudden national violent upheaval, especially in a political or social
context.
19. Remittance- a sum of money sent, especially by mail, in payment for goods or services or
as a gift.
20. Invest-devote (one's time, effort, or energy) to a particular undertaking with the
expectation of a worthwhile result.
21. Cope up-to deal with and attempt to overcome problems and difficulties.

23. Closeness-the quality of affection or intimacy in a relationship.
24. Relation-the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected; a
thing's effect on or relevance to another.

something.
5. Quantitatively organized-applies statistics, optimization models, information models,
computer simulations, and other quantitative techniques to the management process.
6. Analyze - examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of (something,
especially information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation.
7. Statistical Approach-It is a method for removing bias from evaluating data by employing
numerical analysis.
