SOCIAL MEDIA HAS NOT IMPROVED HUMAN COMMUNICATION.

Introduction:
Human Communication is a course that focuses on the communication and relationship within
humans that could be physically, emotionally, empathetically, or verbally expressed. According
to Oxford University Press, it is the process of creating meaning through symbolic interaction.
Human communication also explores how people could use communication to effectively solve
problems, build relationships, and fix misunderstandings. The fact remains that the only thing
that is constant in our world is change, communication changes over time however, not all
people can cope with these changes causing conflicts and misunderstandings. This is where
Social Media comes in, Social media plays a vital role in the deterioration of human
communication. Social Media is a broad field that could be used to communicate with other
people and influence many with just one tap away; however, the quote "Think before you click"
is not being applied individually causing havoc everywhere. Social media has not improved
human communication; rather, it is a hindrance in making human communication.

First Substantive Point: Sexual Harassment

People know that social media is a huge part of everyday life, especially for most teens today.
Throughout the years the rise of social media virtual spaces has become a place where men and
women can become victimized. Unfortunately, the rise of social media use among teens has been
associated with more challenges and dangers. Some social media incidents fall squarely on the
extreme of Sexual Assault and Harassment.

Sexual harassment on social media platforms has become commonplace. Another Pew survey
found that 33% of women under 35 say they have experienced sexual assault online. And 11% of
men under 35 reported the same.

The numbers are worse for minority groups, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, or
bisexual. Nearly seven in every ten say they have been targets of sexual harassment on social
media platforms.

Sexual harassment online is when a person sends an unwanted inappropriate images, messages,
or emails. It is when a person feels uncomfortable or feels like they may be in danger because of
what is sent to them. A common form of sexual harassment on the internet occurs when a
harasser sends unwanted abusive, threatening, or obscene messages to a victim via email or
instant message (Sexual Harassment n.d 2017). People are constantly receiving emails and/or
messages that follow them wherever they go because, in today's society, most people are using
phones and/or sites for everything.

Second Substantive Point: Increasing Gaps Between Families
As it is observed that the latest mode of communication reduces face-to-face interaction slowly.
Hence it changes individuals’ behavior. Amichai Hamburger and Ben Artzi (2003) explained
that the internet will be highly dominant; thus, some scholars observed that heavy and die-hard
internet users seem isolated from regular social contacts. The reason behind it is that these media
isolate people because the heavy reliance on gadgets makes them habitual and decreases the
number of interpersonal relationships. As a result, less frequency of interpersonal
communication creates a communication gap among the masses. Families spend their leisure
time watching their favorite TV shows or are too busy with ambitious plans to improve their
living standards. The lack of communication among the family members is harming
relationships.

According to a credible site Researchgate.net, the communication gap is causing a lack of trust
among the family members, leading to frequent fights among them. The atmosphere in the
family is tense and suffocating to the point that they can’t share and communicate properly with
a family member. They do not share their problems, and joys and remain confined and isolated
themselves. Instead, they vent on social media… They create a haven for themselves thinking
that venting and talking to other people is better than connecting with their family.

Third Substantive Point:

It is generally believed that languages are constantly changing. Either get a chance to grow or die
of stagnation. There are many situations that contribute to growth, that as, language
development. Not only does the language change, but it can deviate and become completely
different from the original language. This difference is subject to time, passed down from culture
to culture and generation to generation. However, language change is less visible from a lifetime
perspective. Children and parents understand each other, but over generations (hundreds or
thousands of ancestral years) languages change to the point that communication between
speakers and listeners becomes difficult (Burton, Dechaine, Vetikiotis-Bateson, 2012).
The Filipino language is no exception. These days, differences in the languages spoken, be they
English or Filipino, give rise to different methods of voice communication. Unlike most evolving
languages, achieving its uniqueness didn't take hundreds of years. These social choosers are
Bekimon, Konyo, and Jejemon.
In sociolinguistics, a social choice or social dialect is a type of language associated with a social
group. These groups may include socioeconomic class, ethnic group, age group, etc.

This is a socialist that began as Algot, or secret language, and has become common slang in the
gay community of the Philippines. It uses Tagalog, English, Spanish, and even Japanese
elements. We also use celebrity names and trademarks to give them new meanings in different
contexts. Homosexuals who speak the language are humorously referred to as bekimons, but
these days, sociolect is no longer spoken exclusively in the gay community. Women also spoke
the newly created language.

Forth Substantive Point: Cyberbullying

According to UNICEF Cyberbullying is bullying with the use of digital technologies. It can take
place on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms, and mobile phones. It is repeated
behavior, aimed at scaring, angering, or shaming those who are targeted. Teenagers who are
addicted to social media are more likely to engage in cyberbullying, as well as those who spend
more time online.

Bullying has no longer persisted in the real world. The cyber world has also been hurt by this
matter where technology is now used to deliberately and constantly harm others. With the
growth of social media throughout the world, cyberbullying is getting worse. Bullying in the real
world compared to cyberbullying has its differences. The bullying in cyberspace ranges from
humiliation, threats, harassment, etc. These problems are starting to harm minors which can
happen from a simple text message or a message sent using a social media website to harass
someone. A form of cyberbullying can be where a child posts something on a social networking
site where they are being harsh, cruel, or even mean to embarrass someone. Another way young
teens are participating in cyberbullying involves the creation of fake accounts to reach out to
someone to harass them. The victims will suffer from health problems and lowered self-esteem,
and sometimes it will reach the point where they skip school. Cyberbullying is a very serious
problem where it leaves victims helpless and develops a suicidal tendency.

Fifth Substantive Point: Suicide

In seventh grade, Todd had logged onto a webcam site where she met a 30-year-old man who
cajoled her into showing him her breasts. When she sought to withdraw from the man's persistent
attention, he contacted her via Facebook. He threatened to send the topless photos of her to
"everyone" if she did not "put on a show".

Unfortunately for Todd, it was no empty threat: the man had obtained her personal data,
including where she lived and went to school, and made good on his word. When she changed
schools to avoid the people who had seen the uncensored photo, he made it his profile picture on
Facebook.

The media, as well as the girl's school, have stressed the issue of bullying in this story, but they
must also address adult male cyberstalking and the influence of porn on teenage social
interaction. The last two issues are often considered too "difficult" to address in the mainstream,
even though their influences are very much ingrained in the mainstream.

In fact, Todd's case is not an isolated one. At least two American girls have reportedly committed
suicide after their former boyfriends, following a breakup, forwarded nude photos of them.
A study in the peer-reviewed journal Archives of Sexual Behavior found that almost 18% of high
school students – boys and girls, some as young as 14 – acknowledged sending "explicit" images
of themselves on cellphones to other students. Previous studies had just asked about
"provocative" images, which are not illegal (nude images of minors are). In the survey group of
600 private high school students from the US southwest, 30% of girls reported having received
an "explicit" image, while 50% of boys did. (According to the researchers, the difference
between the numbers of self-reported senders and receivers had to do with forwarding.)

Building Relationships and Staying Connected
Rebut: overused of connectivity pwedeng mag bigay daan sa miscommunication on certain
people… for example, you have a wife/husband but the fire inside the both of you has long
died… since di ka na kontento sa Buhay na ganon. But then suddenly you met a girl on social
media and then blah blah something developed and then in no time you started to cheat on your
partner/wife/husband which cause the SPARK between you and your wife/husband to diminish

Finding Your Voice

Rebut: People of all ages can use social media to develop a platform with a larger audience than
they have in any other setting. It can also lead to certain influencers doing bad things on social
media. Take TikTok for instance… we can ALL agree that TikTok is a good thing but NOT
compared to the bad things TikTok has in it… which leads me to the fact why TikTok was
ALMOST banned from the US … since it spread false information and is NOT  a credible source
for some.

Showing Empathy and Kindness

Rebut: showing empathy to people who had a recent family member die. For example, the ofw
that was stocked inside a refrigerator… was an event that caused our nation to stir into shock and
devastation Pero sa kasalukuyan at pag lipas ng Panahon … There are people in this world with
twisted minds and “dark humor”. They create memes about deceased people “na ref” is what
they claim.
Source: based on experience… I know a person who is like that.

Offering Support
Rebut: it may cause miscommunication because some people may spread awareness just for
clout and suddenly cause the spread of fake news.
 Better Communication
Rebut better communication BUT are you sure it would be better??? Researchers say that
because of gaming and unstable mental health DUE to the media, many people are prone to
ghosting others when it comes to communicating because gaming is fun but it drains us too
much. Which leads to us choosing not to reply for hours.

 Spreading News:
Rebut: are you sure that this information is from a credible source?? Well… if that source came
from a verified influencer how would you know that. That in itself is true?

 Building a Business
Rebut: quote “it’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they had been fooled.”
business can be a number one fact in miscommunication because people are die-hard for things
that are more in their favor/ budget when it comes to business (since if there is a business there is
a consumer) people are more prone to be fooled with the right/wrong words and persuasion.
Which leads them to be scammed.

 Establishing Authority
Rebut: Positive authority is earned or given. For example, a teen is elected President of the
Student Body at school or a teen demonstrates an ability to fix computers. This is legitimate
positive authority. It is an example of working cooperatively.
Negative authority is not earned, it is taken. For example, a teen says to members of a club he or
she is part of, “I am going to do this and you are going to that.” It is a demonstration of the need
for power or control.
Some people say that if teenagers had more experiences with positive authority figures, they
would be less rebellious, and defiant and have fewer problems with authority. Teens with
authority problems may have more going on than just the typical teenage issues with authority. Is
your teenager showing increased difficulties with teachers, coaches, the police, or at home? Is
your teen becoming more defiant, having trouble in school, seeming extremely angry, getting
into trouble with the law, being a bully, etc.? They could have Oppositional Defiant Disorder
(ODD).

 Driving Traffic
Rebut: Since this driving traffic to your website is too broad… what if this “link” suddenly leads
you to something more sinister because of a prank? (for example, pornography, dark web) That
means there is a miscommunication because
 Enhancing the Customer Experience
REBUT: “Then they need something you offer, they can come straight to you for help” what if
the person that is going to help only has limited resources and knowledge… edi mag lelead parin
siya sa miscommunication

 Learning and Education

Rebut: most people are ignorant when it comes to terms of social media… the old citizens and
the children are the people who would be affected by these because… if they are being taught the
wrong way of education and learning on social media … It can cause a tumor for some children
because it will stick with them forever.

Motivating Young People

Avoid Most Negative Motivation REBUT: The unacceptable form of this kind of motivation
includes...Threats,  Restriction, Belittling, Pouting, and withdrawing
motivation is a misconception. What if these “motivators” are only doing these things for
clout??? The motivated person opens up to the “motivator” but the motivator is only putting up a
facade…. After the motivated person opens up… the motivator suddenly attacks by spreading
false rumors… without understanding, there is no proper communication.

 Creativity
Rebut creativity in what we all post. “Think before you click” creativity is not only prison in
“drawings, art, sketches” it is also categorized into what we all have in mind. What if? To gain
followers they go to extreme methods by doing pornography and posting it on certain platforms
like Twitter, Fb, Yt, and Tumblr.
