CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

According to AbhiskerKaradkar (September 13, 2015), a professor at North

Carolina, based on his research on recently discovered documentation. It says

that,Today’s world is global village. Everyone is connected to one another in this vast

network generated by the Internet. As said by Marshall McLuhan, a philosopher of

communication theory, “The new electronic independence re-creates the world in

image of global village.” This electronic independence inherently dependent upon the

Internet specially the Technologies, It illuminates the lives of thousands of people by

spreading knowledge internationally, thereby making us global citizens.

In the past, the communicating and free sharing of thoughts among people

were restricted by long distance, nationality and/or religion. But now, even these

barriers cannot stop the flow of information and knowledge. The new world of social

networking allows free sharing of thoughts. Online social networks are created by

websites such as Facebook, which has emerged as a giant in this social world. So

how do these networks affect our education? How do they influence the lives of

students?Humans are social animals. We always like to remain in some group or

another, and we prefer to follow what this group does. All of our traditions and

cultures are the product of this group-oriented facet of human nature.

A well-known American psychologist, Abraham Maslow, stated in his “Theory

of Motivation” that the social need of human beings is the third most important

requirement after our physical and safety needs the third tier in his hierarchy of
needs. Even our self-esteem comes after this social dependence. This is the main

reason billions of people use social networking to stay connected, make friends and

satisfy their social needs. But in some way social media have advantages and

disadvantages.

As of 2015 the world’s largest social networking company, Facebook, has

1.49 billion active users, and the number of users is increasing every year. One of

the most interesting things to look at is the increasing number of student users on

such social networking sites. As per the survey conducted by Pew Research Center,

72 percent of high school and 78 percent of college students spend time on

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. These numbers indicate how much the student

community is involved in this virtual world of social networking.

Actually, many reasons exist that explain why students love to spend time

socializing. Firstly, social networks provide them the freedom to do whatever they

want to upload what they want and talk to whom they want. They like to make new

friends and comment on the lives of different people. Students can create other

online identities that the real world does not allow. The freedom it gives them to act

just by sitting in front of a computer enthralls them, and they then demand for more

freedom. Never before has it been so easy for young minds to create a digital image

of their actions through such a spontaneous medium.

According to Professor ShyamS. Sunder, a renowned researcher at Penn

State, “The types of actions users take and the kinds of information they are adding
to their profiles are a reflection of their identities.” Our students have become prone

to frequent fluctuations in mood and self-control. If one of a student’s friends posted

about his or her present relationship with someone, then other friends are pressed to

do the same thing. Actions that attract more public attention hold more value, even

despite some of them being immoral or illegal. We even see that many students are

worried about their looks, and so they always try to upload nicer pictures than their

friends. A recent survey has stated that whenever someone uploads a profile picture,

it immediately affects the moods of friends. It often produces stress, anxiety or fear

about their identities as people. Consistently thinking in this way can sometimes lead

to depression.

The most important things in a student’s life are studying, learning good habits

and gaining knowledge to become a person with moral character. But today, as we

see in various studies, this optimal learning process is seriously jeopardized by

students becoming entrapped by the ploys of social networking. Students neglect

their studies by spending time on social networking websites rather than studying or

interacting with people in person. Actively and frequently participating in social

networking can negatively affect their grades or hamper their journeys to their future

careers. Getting too involved in social media can lead to an addiction that inculcates

bad habits. Students prefer to chat with friends for hours, and this leads to a waste of

time that could have been used for studying, playing or learning new skills.

It is often said that a long-term friendship or relationship is developed when

people meet each other, spend time and share their experiences. But this virtual way

of communicating with each other does not lead to a natural, friendly experience and
hence cannot produce a healthy relationship with those friends. Also, these

relationships tend to terminate easily due to a lack of personal contact.

The system generates a competition to make as many new friends as

possible and the socalled “social quotient” of a person is decided by how many

friends they have and not on how good-natured and congenial the person really is.

Often, students who are not old enough to accurately analyze the world “like” or

comment on social or political issues, and this leads sometimes to serious

controversies. Considering all of the above pros and cons, it is necessary to develop

certain regulations over the use of such social networking sites, especially for high

school and college students. But still, students should get the choice to spend time

socializing in an effective way.

It should not hamper their school or college performance, and it should be

kept in mind that social networking sites create virtual worlds that drastically differ

from reality. Students should develop the cognitive and intuitive ability to analyze

how much time they want to spend on social media. It is left up to the students to

decide what really matters in their life and how much of this virtual life translates to

real life.
According to John V. Pavlik (December 12, 2012) Then here comes the birth

of new medias. The influence of the new media and sources of information, however,

is always much stronger on young people that on adults. The decisions young

people would take under such influence are more emotional and their choice often is

not reasonable as would be the choice of adults. A TV advertisement for an aesthetic

surgeon, for example, can soon become a questions and answers visit on the

website of the surgeon. The next step could be a teenager going to the surgeon's

consultation and even deciding for an intervention.

New media has been an important tool in era of globalization, as it has

opened up previously unimaginable forms of communication between people a world

apart and has been seen as the "death of distance" by more than one commentator.

Personal blogs, websites and pictures are now able to be seen by friends who are

living on different continents, and these pieces of personal content can become very

influential very quickly. New media can surpass borders, which opens up the

possibility for the globalization of previously isolated cultures. In fact, the only way

that totalitarian governments have been able to stem the tide of this form of

borderless communication and exchange of ideas is to suppress the Internet entirely,

as seen in North Korea.New media has enabled social movements to make rapid

gains within society. New media has been used to educate, organize and share

cultural and social ideas with large bodies of people. Websites like Facebook allow

the viral spread of material so populist ideas can spread with ease.
One of the earliest examples of the use of new media in a social protest was

at the World Trade Organization's Ministerial Conference in 1999. The protestors

used new media to organize the protests and communicate and educate

participants. New media was used to provide an alternative set of information and

perspective in a widely publicized way that would not have been possible before.

New media was also used in the 2011 "Arab Spring" to mobilize support and to

communicate to the world the situation from a common person's perspective rather

than the perspective of official state media, which often conflicted with the truth. In

2011, new media was powerful enough to bring down governments and cause

regime change. On the other side, this new media was also used by looters in

England in August of 2011 to mobilize and avoid the police and to commit wanton

criminality on the streets, illustrating that like all tools, new media can be used for

both good causes and bad.Another form of new media is computer games on the

Internet, such as Second Life or MMORPG`s (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-

Playing Games) including "World of Warcraft," where people can form their own

social groups unbound by distance. New media has created the ability for people to

live out their lives in a virtual reality. As a rule, media promotes fashion because what

is modern and in fashion sells media products. Many things are modern but the list is

always changing and while one thing gets oldfashioned, another comes to replace it.

As media is far-reaching, teenagers always understand what is new and they

demand it. They demand beautiful clothes, beauty products, even plastic surgery

because to be good-looking is obvious in fashion. Media promote leadership ideas

which point out that it is not enough to be just clever to succeed in career. Young

people need to be wealthy, beautiful and powerful. That was the effects and purposes

of media to students and to their studies.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

LITERARY REVIEW
According to Samaha Maya (2016)In exploration, we find new techniques,

new knowledgeeven developed newsubstances, gadgets, equipment, processes or

procedures, imagination andskill isemployed by the researcher. The commodities,

new devices, services, in technology areneeds of man for a better fuller life which is

the concern of the research. These useful artsare the products of the technological

environment and the enduser is society in general. The fast growing trend and

innovation in technologies today prompts researchers toconduct studies about the

fast food chain advertisement to patronize their products andmodern technologies in

every aspect of our daily living. These are the related literatures about the of

research that give us the prior knowledge on how to make our research successful.

Technology is going through a revolution while human beings evolve also.

The recent years have witnessed a revolutionary development in mobile

technologies. The development has involved the hardware, software, and network

communications. Therefore, leaders of mobile technologies like mobile device

manufacturers and mobile services/apps developers compete to attract the

increasingly growing wide section of mobile users to fulfil their demands. With a

smartphone, a person can make calls, send e-mails, watch and share photos and

videos, play video games and music, keep track of appointments and contacts, surf

the Internet, use voice search, check news and weather, use chat applications for

voice calls and texting (e.g.What`sapp) and interact on social networks (e.g.,

Facebook).
Based on the evidence of field observations, a survey of 120 Al-azhar

students, and an analysis of previously conducted studies, face to face

communication with their family members and friends has reduced as a result of the

use of technology. People are neglecting to engage personally, uninhibited by

phones and devices and even when actually in the presence of others. They are

becoming more reliant on communicating with friends and family through technology.

These are partly because they spend more time on the mobile and internet and

therefore have little time for interaction with their friends and family, perhaps

because the internet offers them the platform for personal interactions with many

people of diverse background around the world. A majority of individuals felt the

quality of their conversations degraded in the presence of technology. Also, the

majority of respondents were bothered when family and friends used technology

while spending time together. More than 78 % of students noticed a degradation in

the quality of their conversations with others when technology is present or used.

This indicated strongly that face toface communications have decreased both in

quantity and quality.(Mohammed M. Elsobeihi&Samy S. Abu Naser July 2017)

Paul B. Cochran (2012)Online social networks (OSNs) have permeated all

generations of Internet users, becoming a prominent communications tool,

particularly in the student community. Thus, academic institutions and faculty are

increasingly using social networking sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to

connect with current and potential students and to deliver instructional content.
Altamura&Hollander (2011)Internet use plays in the lives of today’s young

adults, understanding possible health implications is of clinical importance. In

particular, problematic internet use (PIU) is a new and growing health concern for

adolescents and young adults. PIU lacks a standardized definition, but it has also

been referred to as internet addiction.

Emmers M. Sommer (2010) Found that the sex offenders they studied did not

watch more pornography than non-offenders. They were, however, more likely to be

aroused by this content and perform some sexual act afterwards.

LinzPonrod (1984), a group of men were shown movies with violent sexual

content. The more movies the men saw, the more desensitized they became to the

content. They found the films humorous after several days of watching them. Almost

a third of young men are getting information from pornography.

In a study of Russell (1998) about violent sexual materials, 29% of the young

men surveyed said that pornography is their most important source of sexual

information. Harris & Scott (2002) In CNN and Time did a survey about where

teenagers got their information about sex from. 29% of the teenagers that responded

said that they got their most important knowledge about sex from television. Many

studies point to the possibility of media influence. These influences can possibly

change attitudes about sex, morals, body image, drinking, and reality.
Danielle Bringham( 2010)There is no conclusive proof that media influences

people due to the ongoing controversy. However, some people believe strongly in

media influence and are trying to influence others through media, as is seen in the

following study on future media effectors. This study is interested in how Liberty

University students are interested in impacting others through the media, if they

believe that they can influence others, and if they should try to influence others on

the basis of Christian principles.

AtaWaim(2000) conducted a study entitled as ‘‘The effect of using computer

on 6th grade primary students in the curriculumof the Arabic language’’. The study

aims to investigatethe effect of the computer as an educational tool on

students’academic achievement in the Arabic grammar taught to the6th grade

primary students in Riyadh. The study sample consistedof an experimental group

including 30 students studiedby using computer and a control group including 30

studentsstudied by the traditional method. The study revealed significantstatistical

differences in students’ average academicachievement between the two groups in

the level of remembranceand the absence of significant statistical differences inthe

level of academic achievement and application and theoverall test level. In this paper,

a result of the survey of impact of social networking sites has been presented and

discussed. It is found that studentshare very fond of using Facebook, twitter,

YouTube and Orkut.Paying attention to their academic progress and addressing

anyissues will go a long way towards keeping the negative aspects of social media

from influencing their studies. However, facultiesand students are now pushing

learning beyond the borders of the classroomthrough social networking.

Which move also comeswith hurdles, including the fact that many colleges still

block access to such sites within their walls? Most of the information puton the social

media is fake, or half-truth.

Rithika M. Selvaraj ( December 2013)While going go through this information

we feel annoyedon one hand and develop thesame habit of posting misleading

information on the other. The students are getting addicted to the sites day by day the

number ofusers is on the rise. This proves that e- world is taking its toll over the real

world. For the sake of numbers, they have manyfriends, but in reality, they are

devoid of good friends. Students are becoming individualistic. Social values are

vanishing. Finally,I would like to conclude my paper by the appropriate, balanced

and socially approved use of social networking sites. Withwisdom along with

rationale thinking, too much of anything is good for nothing. This is a universal truth,

one should be cautiouswhen using new technologies.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Qualitative descriptive research (case studies) ultimate goal is to improve

practice. This presupposes a cause/effect relationship between behavior and

outcome; however, this method will only let you hypothesize about variables and

describe them. When you move to show correlation among them, you’re doing

quantitative work. But remember, correlation does not mean causation. With these

studies, you can examine factors that might be influencing behaviors, environments,

circumstances. You cannot prove cause/effect for certain.Case studies identify and

provide evidence to support the fact that certain parts/variables exist, that they have

construct validity (i.e. people agree these are the parts). Qualitative-descriptive

method is a necessary precursor to quantitative research you always need to

operationalize variablesdefine them.

Qualitative methods are sometimes assumed to be easieror less rigorous than

quantitative ones, the fact is that information of this kind can provide a depth of

understanding about phenomena that cannot be achieved in other ways. The design

of qualitative research is probably the most flexible of the various experimental

techniques, encompassing a variety of accepted methods and structures. Though

there is no standardized structure, this type of study still needs to be carefully

constructed and designed.Researchers need to continually ensure they are

conducting bias-free, open-ended technique and staying alert to potential sources of

error. This usually involves awareness of bias and deep sensitivity to the

phenomenon in question.
METHODOLOGY

This tools that we've made are use to know how media affects their family

relationship, romantic relationship and their academic performances of the grade 11

student of PWC of Davao. We conduct interviews to this specific student and each

questionnaire is consist of 10 questions that will be given to the students to be

answered. They can freely answer each question without a time limit so that all their

answers are not answered in a hurry.

ANALYSIS OF DATA

After we conduct our interviews and all the questionnaires have been

answered by the grade 11 students of Philippine Women’s College we read each of

the questionnaires together with the corresponding responses of the students to

each questions ,Then we analyze each of their answers by comparing and contrast

every paper to another so that we could know if there are similarities and differences

on what their point of view to each and every questions inside our questionnaires .
CONCLUSION

We conclude that media are very useful to a person and it helps them on their

daily live specially the students to do their work very fast. Media comes in different

forms and structure. Social media is used by millions of individuals who collectively

generate an array of social forms from their interactions. There were down sides to it

but overall, the effects of modern technology to people were positive.

RECOMMENDATION

We fully understand the positive effects of Media and the purpose of it but we

recommend to have a limitation on using Media because it also have a negative

effect which is, it may destroy your studies when you got addicted on it. However,

the use of media also entails issues related to information security, privacy protection

and many more, which are worth getting acquainted with in order to avoid any harm.

We also recommend to research more about the effect of media so that you will fully

understand the true meaning and the proper use of media.
