About the Unisphere Service Manager

About the Unisphere Service Manager

The Unisphere Service Manager (USM) is a collection of tools that help you update, install,
and maintain your system hardware and software as well as provide contact and system
information to your service provider.

Each tool will guide you through the installation or maintenance task and, if required,
provide context-sensitive help on how to perform a particular step.
Use the USM to:

◆ Perform hardware installation tasks, such as adding a new disk drive or disk-array
enclosure.
◆ Perform hardware maintenance tasks, such as replacing a faulted disk drive or verifying
that your storage system is operating normally.
◆ Software wizards allow you to update your system software in a streamlined manner,
using a custom update or express install, without the assistance of your service provider.
The wizards help you download the necessary software, run any pre-install validation
checks to determine if your system is ready for the update, and install the software. The
USM supports software upgrades for operating environment, service packs, and other
system firmware upgrades.
◆ View technical advisories. Technical advisories notify you of any issues that could
adversely impact the behavior of the storage system. These could include operating
environment version issues, replication software issues, severe performance issues, or
firmware upgrade requirements.
You can also configure the USM to automatically check for and/or download updated
versions of the software. For more information, refer to the USM online help.

Before you start

The Unisphere Service Manager (USM) must run on a Windows host or Windows virtual
machine that is:
◆ Running a supported operating system version.

For supported versions, refer to the EMC Unisphere Service Manager Release Notes.

◆ Connected to the Internet and is on the same network as the management ports on your
system.
◆ Running Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

For supported versions, refer to the EMC Unisphere Service Manager Release Notes. If you
do not install the correct version prior to downloading USM, the installation wizard will
prompt you to install the correct version.

◆ You should also verify if you are using a proxy server.

If you're using a proxy server to connect to the Internet, you must configure the proxy
settings so that the Unisphere Service Manager uses the proxy server to connect to external
services. To configure proxy settings, select the Preferences icon located in the upper
right-hand side of the USM, and then select the Proxy Server tab.

Important: If your network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet and you do not configure
the proxy information for the USM, some tools will not function properly.

If you do not already have USM installed on your host or management station, download
and install the latest version:

1. From the EMC Online Support website, navigate to the VNX support by product page.

2. From the Downloads tab, select the Unisphere Service Manager link and save the software
to your host or management station.

3. In the folder where you saved the USM, double-click the executable (.exe) file.

4. If necessary, click Run to start the installation wizard.

5. Follow the instructions that appear.

After you accept the license agreement, the wizard verifies that the host or management
station is running the latest supported Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version.
◆ If the server is running an earlier version of the JRE, select Yes when asked if you
want to continue with the installation.
The installation wizard prompts you to download and install the latest supported
version of the JRE from the Oracle website.

◆ If the server is running a later version of the JRE, the installation wizard asks if you
want to continue with the installation.
Select Yes to continue or No to quit the installation.

Important:
If you select Yes, the USM may not work properly with a later JRE version. If you select No, and
manually remove the later version of the JRE, other applications that require this version may
not work properly.

6. When the installation is complete, click Done.
