Assessment Title Compass error

Assessment Outcome Demonstrate “correcting” and “un-correcting” of the compass

Materials Needed  Chart
 Navigational triangles
 Parallel ruler
 Pencil and eraser
 Calculator
Scenario Your ship is in position Lat 01° 09.05’ N, Long 103° 45.60’ E heading towards a
course 237 pgc and 240 psc transiting approximately 4 miles off Semakau (01° 12.6’
N, 103° 46.7° E) at Singapore strait. You are the OOW and you intend to get the
compass error by transit. You took the compass bearing of the transit which read
017.5°. As the OOW, obtain and calculate the following:

1. Plot the position of the ship on the chart

2. Determine the position of Semakau Lt. (Transit Light) on the chart
3. Determine the true bearing of the transit object
4. Calculate the compass error
5. Determine the variation of the locality
6. Determine the deviation
7. What is the true course if your ship’s heading at the moment is 237° pgc?
8. Find the compass course you need to steer to stay on the track.
Take bearings and calculate compass error, gyro error and deviation, from transit or
