Communication Technology
1 (ICT), and Online Systems:
Functions and Platforms
Since the invention of the electronic digital computers in the 1940’s, technologies
used in the field of generating and producing information have also evolved.
Technologies only served the most basic tasks for the general public while the business
sector, government agencies, and other companies also struggle for their improvements.

What’s In

ACTIVITY: Complete the table by interviewing five (5) persons (from your home and some
neighbors), ask them to answer the questions indicated on the box honestly.

QUESTIONS PERSON (1) PERSON (2) PERSON (3) PERSON (4) PERSON (5)
1. How
many times
have you
checked
your phone
this
morning?
2. How
many status
updates
have you
posted in
Facebook or

If the people you interviewed happens to be “guilty as charged” in most of these

questions, chances are, they are a digital native. And chances are, from the moment
they were born, they were surrounded by technology. They are surrounded by ICT.

ACTIVITY: INTERNET AND COMPUTER READINESS TEST

Read and reflect each item carefully. On the first column in the table are the statements.
On the second column, you will state your answer if you agree or disagree by putting (/)

What is It

LESSON 1.1
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) refers to all technology that
is used to handle telecommunication and access information. It also includes broadcast
media, management systems, and network-based control. Modern definitions describe
ICT as the convergence of several technologies including internet and wireless medium,
but the primary focus is on the access and sharing of information and communications.
It includes the use of computers, radio, television, cellular phones, network hardware
and software, internet connections, satellite systems, applications needed for video
conferencing and distance learning in the field of education.

ICT IN THE PHILIPPINES

Philippines is dubbed as the “ICT Hub of Asia” because of huge growth of ICT-
related jobs, one of which is BPO, Business Process Outsourcing, or call centers. In a
data gathered by the Annual Survey of the Philippines Business and Industries in 2010,
the ICT industry shares 19.3% of the total employment population.

When the internet was fully commercialized in 1995, it has tremendously

impacted culture and commerce, including the rise of near instant communication by
email, instant messaging, telephony (Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP), two-way
interactive video calls, and the World Wide Web with its discussion forums, blogs, social
networking, and online shopping sites. INTERNET is the global system of
interconnected computer networks that uses the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to
communicate between networks and devices.

ICT nowadays has also widened its horizons in developing new tools or emerging
technologies. However, the present information superhighway mainly utilizes the
advantages of the tools’ mobility. Mobile devices can communicate through the following
communication technologies:
 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi)- a type of wireless local area network technology.
 Bluetooth- uses packet-based transmission over short range radio signals.
 Third Generation (3G), fourth generation (4G), Global System for Mobile
Communication (GSM), and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)
 Data Services- data networking services for mobile phones.
 Dial-up Services- data networking services using modems and telephone lines.
 Virtual Private Network (VPN)- secure access to a private network.

The World Wide Web

The World Wide Web is an information system on the internet that allows
documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to
search for information by moving from one document to another. It was invented by
Tim-Berners Lee. The World Wide Web browser software, such as Microsoft’s Internet
Explorer/Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Apple’s Safari, and Google Chrome, let users
navigate from one web page to another via the hyperlinks embedded in the documents.
These documents may also contain any combination of computer date, including
graphics, sounds, text, video, multimedia and interactive content that runs while the
user is interacting with the page. The Web has enabled individuals and organizations
to publish ideas and information to a potentially large audience online at great reduced
expense and time delay.

TYPES OF WEB PAGES

1. WEB 1.0 or THE WEB- It is the first stage of the World Wide Web evolution. It
is a flat or stationary page since it cannot be manipulated by the user.
2. WEB 2.0 or THE SOCIAL WEB- allows users to interact with the page, the user
may be able to comment or create a user account. Most website that we visit
today are Web 2.0.
3. Web 3.0 or THE SEMANTIC WEB- The semantic web provides a framework that
allows data to be shared and reuse to deliver web content specifically targeting
the user. Search Engine will learn about you and your habits from each search
you perform and will gather details about you from your previous activities like
likes and social postings and present the answers as per your preferences.

Below is a comparison of WEB 1.0, WEB 2.0, and WEB 3.0:

FEATURES OF WEB 2.0

FEATURES WEB 2.0

FOLKSONOMY Allows users to collectively classify and find information using
free chosen keywords (e.g. “tagging” by Facebook). Tagging uses
the pound sign #, often refer to as hashtag.
RICH USER Dynamic content that is responsive to user input (e.g., a user
EXPERIENCE can “click” on an image to enlarge it or find out more information)
USER The owner of website is not the only one who is able to put
PARTICIPATION content. Others are able to place a content on their own by
means of comments, reviews, and evaluation.
LONG TAIL Services that are offered on demand rather than on a one-time
purchase. This is synonymous to subscribing to a data plan that
charges you for the amount of time you spent in the internet, or
a data plan that charges you for the amount of bandwidth you
used.
SOFTWARE AS A Users will subscribe to a software only when needed rather than
SERVICE purchasing them.

What I Can Do

ACTIVITY: To fully understand the importance of ICT and the utilization of online
platforms, let us first look at our community. Look for a small business around your
community who use the social media/online platform for their business. Conduct a
short interview of the business owner using the following guide:

COMPANY/ESTABLISHMENT
NAME:_________________________________________________________________________
ADDRESS:_____________________________________________________________________
NATURE OF BUSINESS:_______________________________________________________
PRODUCT/S:__________________________________________________________________

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What are the advantages of using online platforms in your business?
2. What specific online platform you are using?
3. What are the different ways for customers and/or suppliers to contact
you?
4. How often do you use a phone or cellular phone for business? (estimate
number of hours)
5. Does your business have a website? If yes, how does it help your
business? If no, would you consider having one in the future? Why or why
not?
