The Haddonfield Sun

Students throughout Haddon-
field will want to look away. Just
put down the paper if youre read-
ing this article and walk out of
the room. Maybe go outside and
enjoy the dwindling days of your
summer vacation, because its
time to go back to school.
Haddonfield Public School Dis-
trict Superintendent Dr. Richard
Perry said there are several excit-
ing new initiatives in the school
district in the 2011-2012 school
year. He took some time to answer
several questions about the up-
coming school year.
Perry: We are very proud of
our Newsweek high school rank-
ing of 125. In addition, our arts
program is among the best in the
nation, with several of our stu-
dents receiving numerous nation-
al recognition awards.
The primary initiatives for this
school year include the following:
nFocusing on the digital learn-
er for the 21st century by way of
expanding the districts critical
thinking curricular strategies
and implementations in conjunc-
tion with the utilization of tech-
nology and technological sup-
port. This includes providing in-
tense professional development
for staff and gaining the support
of parents and the community.
The district is in the process of
exploring the expansion of wire-
less support and use of technolo-
gy, such as iPads and educational
applications in the classroom.
Developing sources of alterna-
tive revenue for the district.
Given the states cut in education-
al funding this past school year,
we put much effort into building
upon our tuition program for out-
of-district students. The tuition
committee was comprised of
community volunteers with a

The $2.3 million Ellis and Pot-
ter Street intersection project will
be completed early in the new
year, Camden County Freeholder
Ian Leonard said last week as he
visited the site.
Leonard, Freeholder Director
Louis J. Cappelli Jr. and Freehold-
er Scott McCray visited the site
and revealed that the massive
construction project will be com-
pleted by January 2012. The road-
way improvements will include
the installation of a new traffic
signal, repaving of intersection
approaches and the construction
of new turning lanes. New curb-
ing with ADA compliant curb
cuts and ramps will be installed,
along with new stormwater
grates and streetscape improve-
ments.
The $2.3 million project is part
of $10 million that Camden Coun-
ty has invested in the improve-
ments of its roadways this year,
Leonard said.
This has been a project that the
county has been looking at for
several years, Cappelli said.
The project is something that
weve been contemplating for a
while now, he said. These men
and women behind me (the con-
struction workers) would other-
wise be out of work, but theyre
here today earning a paycheck.
The construction project will
improve the entrance into Had-
donfield and make it much safer,
the freeholders said last week.
Drivers will have to slow down at
an intersection and yield to
pedestrians crossing the roadway
at a designated crosswalk.
Even though the construction
is intrusive, Leonard said, busi-
nesses near the site havent had
many complaints about the
process so far. County representa-
tives and project managers went
door to door to local businesses
two weeks before the project
began, he said, to give them a
timetable of the construction
process.
Kress Wine had a problem at
the start of the process, Leonard
said, so the county improved sig-
nage near the intersection to let
motorists know that local busi-
nesses would remain open
throughout the project.
The project will see a complete
revamp of the entrance into Had-
donfield. The intersection will be

background in marketing. From
these efforts, we increased the
revenue from this program from
$187,676 for the 2010-2011 school
year to $332,000 for the 2011-2012
school year. In addition, we enlist-
ed the input from Rutgers MBA
students who analyzed various
means of generating revenue.
Some measures included forming
a partnership with Princeton Re-
view, an SAT/ACT preparatory
program, and implementing the
Haddonfield Summer Academy
which included a variety of cur-
ricular programs.
n Implementing the states
mandated anti-bullying initia-
tives. This school year, school dis-
trict personnel and administra-
tors will be required to follow
state-mandated procedures in
terms of reporting, documenting,
and investigating bullying. Anti-
bullying training will be provided
to staff and parents.
n Expanding the Drexel Uni-
versity/Haddonfield School Dis-
trict Partnership. Haddonfield
Memorial High School students
have taken advantage of this pro-
gram with much success. Cur-
rently, we have 17 new visiting
scholars who have been accepted
into this program for the fall. By
way of our partnership, Haddon-
field students have taken a vari-
ety of courses, obtained both aca-
demic and field experiences, and
thus expanded their educational
opportunities in a significant
way.
This summer, our students at-
tended Drexel academic camps
and participated in internships.
For example, several of our stu-
dents enrolled in the LeBow Busi-
ness College summer academic
camps, engineering summer aca-
demic camps, summer music
technology programs, CAS Inter-
national Materials camps, med-
ical camp, and summer enrich-
ment programs on Drexels cam-
pus. Another example: One of our

We are in the process of devel-
oping with Drexel University En-
gineering School an Introduc-
tion to Engineering dual credit
hybrid course in which students
may participate via online, in the
classroom at Drexel Universitys
main campus, and through field
experiences. Students will experi-
ence what it is like in the every-
day life of an electrical, a chemi-
cal, and a civil engineer.
n School security. Card swipes
for staff will be implemented at
Central School and the middle
school this fall. This is in regard
to an effort to increase school se-
curity. Parents and community
members will continue to be
buzzed into these buildings. How-
ever, the primary change will be
with the staff having access at
various points of the buildings
for emergencies and more effi-
cient entries and exits. All the ele-
mentary schools will now have a
secure way for people to enter the
school buildings.
Perry then forwarded several
questions submitted by The Sun
to the various principals within
the school district. The questions
asked are in bold, with the re-
sponses from principals below.
Are there any schedule
changes (buses, school days, etc.)
in the new school year?
No schedule changes at any
schools.
Are there any curriculum
changes?
The district is currently begin-
ning the alignment to the Com-
mon Core Standards in language

arts and math.
Were improvements made to
school facilities over the summer?
Haddonfield Memorial High
School had some renovation of
the counseling office, including
relocation of the freshman coun-
selor to create a freshman com-
mon area.
Haddonfield Middle School had
some technology upgrades in-
cluding ceiling-mounted projec-
tors, and upgrades to the technol-
ogy room including upgraded
computers and symposium tech-
nology.
Central Elementary had a new
security system installed. The
new system will operate using a
swipe card method. The system
will be operational when the
school year begins.
Are there any new programs
(academic, athletic, extra-curricu-
lar) in place for the new school
year?
HMHS has a new career and
college planning center addition
in the counseling office. New
courses will include womens lit-
erature, dance improvisation, so-
cial, cultural and ballroom dance
forms, modern partnering and in-
version dance, movement archi-
tecture and becoming a dance
maker.
HMS is working on introduc-
ing a Robotics Club and Central
Elementary students in grades
three through five will have the
opportunity to participate in Bat-
tle of the Books. Battle of the
Books is a reading motivation
program. The goals of the pro-
gram are to encourage reading
for pleasure, to broaden reading
interest, and to recognize stu-
dents who enjoy reading.
In addition, Central Elemen-
tary administration is investigat-
ing the opportunity to create and
enter an Odyssey of the Mind
team.

school bus is part of the Safe
Routes to School program, the
goal of which is to assist state
communities in developing and
implementing projects and pro-
grams that encourage walking
and bicycling to school while en-
hancing the safety of these trips.
Tatem Elementary and HMHS
are looking at ways the two
schools can also collaborate.
HMHS Principal Mike Wilson
and Tatem Principal Karen
Schultz are meeting to discuss
ways to capitalize on the close
proximity of the two schools and
have several ideas for ways stu-
dents can work together on a vari-
ety of interesting projects.
Elizabeth Haddon Elementary
is collaborating with the PTA to
provide an after-school enrich-
ment program for the students
that will focus upon their inter-
ests and skills. The School Gar-
den Initiative, that was imple-
mented last year, will be expand-
ed to more closely align with the
classroom instruction while
teaching the students about
healthy eating choices.
All staff will be participating
in an anti-bullying training pro-
gram that will help faculty and
staff understand the new law as
well as learn strategies to create a
school environment that is free of
bullying.
Are there any new fees or ex-
penses for parents and students
(participation fees, for example)?
There are no new fees or ex-
penses this year.
Have class sizes increased or
decreased?
Central Elementarys popula-
tion has increased by 31 students
over last years numbers; howev-
er, the addition of the third- and
fifth-grade teachers has kept the
class sizes about the same.
Tatem Elementary has grown
significantly over the past year.
Enrollment has grown to just
over 500 students. A new opening
of a second grade and fifth-grade
class as well as a new section of
preschool will hopefully help
class size.
Elizabeth Haddons population
has decreased slightly, resulting
in a reduction of one class at the
first grade level.
What are the top goals for the
coming school year?
HMHS goals: increase of tech-
nology resources in the math de-
partment, increase student con-
nection among the various levels
of school within the district, cre-
ate a mentoring program for at-
risk incoming students.
HMS goal is to implement the
new anti-bullying legislation.
Central Elementarys goals are
to see the students grow as learn-
ers, critical thinkers, and citi-
zens. We look forward to challeng-
ing our students. As we do so, we
will equip them with 21st-century
skills and prepare them for the
digital world they live in.
Tatems top goal is to ensure all
students achieve their full poten-
tial. In partnership with parents
and the community, we want to
provide a well-balanced, integrat-
ed, character-building curricu-
lum based upon diverse and indi-
vidual student needs within a

here were you on the morn-
ing of Sept. 11, 2001? When
America came under at-
tack? Youll never forget.
Youll never forget hearing the
news, watching on television as the
Twin Towers collapsed, and trying to
make sense of it all.
Youll never forget the heroic ac-
tions of first responders, many of
whom gave their own lives trying to
save others.
No, you wont forget. And, this Sept.
11, youll likely join America in mark-
ing the 10th anniversary of the
tragedy.
If you or your church, civic organi-
zation or other group has a special 9-11
remembrance ceremony or event
planned, we want to know about it.
Just send us an e-mail.
Well be compiling a list and pub-
lishing it on our regional website,
http://sj.sunne.ws.
But wed encourage everyone to do
more than just pay deserved respects.
Wed ask that, in honor of the 9-11 he-
roes, you do something to make a dif-
ference in your community. You dont
have to be rich to volunteer your time
or make a small donation to a food
pantry. Every effort helps. Every ac-
tion, no matter how small, can help a
fellow American.
We truly saw the best of America in
the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks. We
saw men and women rush to the
scenes and risk their lives. We saw a
nation pull together to support the
families of those who perished and to
track down those responsible for such
devastation. The states were truly
united.
We want to help you honor the mem-
ories of the 9-11 heroes. Tell us what
youre planning; and well tell every-
one else.

Earthquake, monsters, homework and poison
Monster-Mania still scary
after almost 20 years
I love horror movies. Not so much the
BOO! jump out at you type of horror
movies that litter the silver screens in this
day and age, but older horror movies that
actually focus on plot and getting inside of
your brain to create an uncomfortable situ-
ation.
Thats probably the main reason Ive al-
ways wanted to attend the annual Monster-
Mania Con at the Cherry Hill Crowne
Plaza Hotel. Each year, it comes to Cherry
Hill Township and thousands of visitors
swarm to the hotel from around the South
Jersey (and Philadelphia) area to meet
some of their favorite horror/sci-fi celebri-
ties and check out hundreds of vendors.
The annual convention, now in its 19th
year, has been terrifying visitors since
1992, said David M. Hagan, vice president
of Monster-Mania LLC. Each year the con-
vention is held for three days and draws
about 15,000 visitors over the weekend.
Cherry Hill has always been a great lo-
cation for us, Hagan said, before excusing
himself after a brief interview. For the
first hour of the convention on Friday
night, Aug. 19, the Crowne Plaza experi-
enced a rolling blackout because of the tor-
rential downpours that soaked so many of
the visitors (including yours truly).

Ugh, homework!
Lets make it worthwhile
Homework starts as early as kinder-
garten. My older daughter is already quite
happily warning my youngest that she
will have to do homework in kindergarten.
Through my recent studies to obtain my
masters degree, Ive come across many re-
search articles about homework. They all
had the same theme homework isnt real-
ly necessary. What?! I said to myself. As a
teacher, I assigned homework because I felt
it should be a review of skills and concepts
that the students learned that day. I had
parents complain that there wasnt enough
homework and parents complain that it
was too much. The general rule that teach-
ers follow is 10 minutes of homework per
grade (i.e. 10 minutes in first grade, 20 min-
utes in second grade, etc.). If your childs
homework is taking much longer than
that, a red flag should go up.
When your children come home from
school, I would recommend that you allow
them at least 30 minutes to unwind, have a
snack and a drink. Most kids come home
dehydrated from school and tired. Asking
them to complete their homework immedi-
ately can lead to more frustration and
angst. If a child has an afterschool activity
and completing the homework immediate-
ly is necessary, I would suggest that you
allow them to choose the order they would
like to complete their homework. For ex-
ample, most elementary aged children love
math. This subject could be the starting
point.

Surprising advice from experts:
Stop eating poison mushrooms
Poison control officials are asking New
Jersey residents to please stop eating poi-
son mushrooms. If you dont mind.
An Ocean County man is among four
people hospitalized for this kind of poison-
ing after weekend storms raised a new
crop of lawn candy, according to The News
of Cumberland County. Others who got
sick were from Hudson County and Mon-
mouth.
One or two people die every year in New
Jersey from eating poison mushrooms
they find growing in their yards or along
hiking trails, poison expert Dr. Steven Mar-
cus told The News.
Marcus is executive and medical direc-
tor of New Jersey Poison Information and
Education System, which warns on their
website, There is no easy way to tell the
difference between poisonous and harm-
less mushrooms.

safe and nurturing environment.
Elizabeth Haddons goal is to
more fully align the Responsive
Classroom Approach that teaches
respect for others with the new
anti-bullying legislation.
Is there anything else you would
like to communicate to parents
and students as the new school
year begins?
HMHS Principal Mike Wilson:
Please join us in welcoming stu-
dents new to HMHS. We have the
largest number of new families
in recent memories (over 30 new
families) due to a significant in-
crease in tuition students and
families moving into Haddon-
field.
HMS Principal Dr. Gino Priolo:
I look forward to sharing with
the HMS community my love and
passion for children and educa-
tion. The middle school level pro-
vides educators with the chal-
lenge of working with children at
one of the most exciting and in-
triguing developmental phases of
their lives. In partnership with
the teachers, students and par-
ents of HMS, we will build on the
past successes of the school,
while fostering continued growth
and improvement.
Central Elementary School
Principal Chuck Klaus: I would
like to state how excited I am to be
a part of the Central School com-
munity and I look forward to
working closely with the students
and parents to create a positive
school climate where learning
and student growth will flour-
ish.
Tatem Elementary School
Principal Karen Schultz: Tatem
is excited to welcome five new
teachers. Each teacher brings a
unique perspective and a variety
of experiences to share with our
school community.
Elizabeth Haddon Elementary
School Principal Craig Ogelby:
The staff has been busy
throughout the summer prepar-
ing for the new school year by re-
pairing, cleaning and rejuvenat-
ing our beloved school. We are ex-
cited and ready for our students
to return. Our students will be
welcomed back on the first day of
school in grand tradition with
our Ringing of the Bell opening
ceremony replete with banner
and balloons.
Our PTA continues the gala
festivities by hosting an Ice
Cream Social at 6 p.m. that
evening for all Haddon families,
old and new, to have an opportu-
nity to meet others and feel part
of the school community. This is
a great time to re-establish friend-
ships, share summer adventures,
and come together as a school
community to support our stu-
dents growth and love of learn-
ing.

the acquisition of the Bancroft
property for open space.

handicapped accessible and

than it is now, with sidewalks ex-
tending on both sides of the street
into Cherry Hill.
The project will also include an
upgrade to the park in between
the intersection, significant light-
ing upgrades, and several beauti-
fication measures that will make
the entrance into the borough
much more pleasant.
The borough is paying about
$700,000 for the project, Borough
Administrator Sharon McCul-
lough previously reported. About
$500,000 of the $700,000 was for de-
sign costs of the project that the
borough paid several years ago,
she said. The additional $200,000
is being spent on upgrades for the
project.

Borden said the borough solici-
tors and other representatives
have crafted a presentation esti-
mating just how much money it
will take to purchase the 19-acre
property for public use. The pres-
entation will detail how much it
will cost in maintenance as well,
he said, and will go into the possi-
ble benefits it would have for Had-
donfield and its taxpayers to own
the campus.
Potential revenue streams to
purchase the property including
the open space trust fund and the
Green Acres funding will be dis-
cussed as well.
Throughout the process, Phil
Caton of Clarke, Caton, and Hintz
has valued the property at around
$12 million.
The borough has about $500,000
in a Green Acres grant, and
$950,000 in its open space fund,
and Camden County also has
funding available for municipali-
ties looking to acquire property
for open space. All of this could
be used for the purchase of the
property.
In other borough news:
Mayor Tish Colombi revealed
that former Haddonfield Mayor
Gene Kain had been in a serious
cycling accident while participat-
ing in a race in Washington
Township. Colombi said Kain was
reaching for his water bottle and
lost control of his bicycle.
He suffered some serious in-
juries, she said, but was at his
home in Haddonfield recuperat-
ing.
